Queen of Apostles Catholic School
Fourth Grade
G.O.A.L.S. for the week of November 2 ¡V 6, 2009

Religion - In Chapter 8 we will discuss the suffering of God¡¦s people in Egypt, their slavery, and their great prophet Moses! Students will define the Words to Know on p. 43 and copy the Questions/Answers 29-32 in their notebook. Keeping this information organized will help prepare students for quizzes and tests.

Math - Our focus will be working Lessons 7 through 11 in Chapter 2. We will continue working computation problems while learning and practicing problem-solving strategies, such as: looking for patterns and translating words to expressions. (Lesson 2-10) Students should always be ready for a quick quiz this week and the Chapter 2 Test will be next Tuesday.

Reading and Language Arts ¡V We will independently read two stories this week to help build comprehension skills, and then read both aloud in class to help us with fluency (smoothly and with expression). The stories are: The Parcel Post Kid  by Michael O. Tunnell (p. 134I) and The Case of the Earthenware Pig by Donald J. Sobol. (p.138)
We will orally summarize, note details, discuss vocabulary and phrases used in the story, and learn about the main features of a mystery story.

This week we will review kinds of sentences, subjects and predicates, common and proper nouns, and direct objects. If we have time, we will learn how to identify and write compound sentences.

Spelling ¡V Our focus this week will be Unit 8 Words: Vowel Sounds: /yoo/, /oo/(p64-67).
There will be a Test on Friday on the Basic and the Challenge Words.

Science ¡VThis week students will learn about the structure of the ocean floor in Chapter 3;Lesson 1. On Monday for class work, they will draw/color/label what the ocean floor looks like and define the important vocab on C68-C69 in their notebooks. There will be a Quiz on Friday.

Social Studies ¡V The highlight of this week is The Appalachian Plateau Region of Virginia --- its location, geography, and how important coal is to the economy of the region. We will be reviewing Chapter 2 this week and take a Test on Thursday.
Review pp. 66 and 67 with emphasis on the Vocabulary, Places and Terms, and Facts and Main Ideas will help prepare us for the Test.

Reminders:

„«    Students are not permitted to bring toys of any kind to school for many obvious reasons. We recently had some problems in the classroom during lesson time, but I think we have resolved the issue.

„«    Students should get their homework checked for correct answers and for neatness. Some papers have been coming to me very hastily done. I know we can do much better.

God bless and have a great week!!!
