FUN RECIPES IN SCIENCE THAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME!

OOBLECK
The following recipe makes enough Oobleck for several
uses!
1. 3 1/3 cups of water
2. 2 boxes of cornstarch
3. 8 drops of green food coloring (only if you want to)
4. 2-3 drops of peppermint flavoring (this is only to
give it a scent---NOT FOR EATING!)

Now, mix the cornstarch, water, food coloring (if
you want), and flavoring (if you want) together.  This
material flows, drips, rolls, and pours.  Try putting
it in a paper cup and using a pencil, jab at it.  You
will be so surprised at what happens.  Then, try pouring it from the cup!
Surprise!!!  I think you will like this.
Store it in an airtight container until
ready to use.

POLYMER
Prepare the following solutions ahead of time.

SOLUTION A:  Place about 1 L (1 quart) of water in a pan.  Slowly sprinkle 40 g of poly (vinyl) alcohol {which can be obtained from a pharmacy or science distributor} on the water, while stirring.  Heat this
mixture to about 90 degrees C.  Do not boil it.  Stir this mixture for about 20 minutes until it looks like white corn syrup.  Cool and store in a plastic jar.
SOLUTION B:  Dissolve 8 g of borax (can find in a
pharmacy, hardware) in about 200 mL of water.  Stir until dissolved.  Store in a plastic jar.

NOW, we have everthing read to prepare the actual
polymer. Place 30 mL of Solution A in a paper cup.  Add
to this 10 mL of solution B.  Stir with an ice-cream
stick (something wooden) until a soft ball is formed.
Remove the polymer ball fromthe cup and knead for about
5 minutes.

Will it bounce?  Will it stretch?  Research polymers to
find out how often this material is used in your life!

MAGNETS
1. Find some metal knitting needles or metal nail files
or metal hair pins.
2. Hold the metal object to be magnetized in one hand.
3. Hold a strong bar magnet (can be found in your Dad's
workshop or at a hardware store) in the other hand.
4. Stroke  the metal object 30 times with the
   same end of the magnet.
5. Do not drop or bang the objects once they are
   magnetized!

CRYSTAL GARDEN
*This is one that you may have already done, but you
may want to do this yourself or with a younger sibling.

1.Half fill a clear plastic jar with hot water.
2.Slowly add salt to the water and stir to dissolve.
3.Continue adding salt until no more will dissolve.
4.Place 1 tablespoon of vinegar in the water.
5.Place a piece of charcoal or small porous stone in
  the jar.
6.Beautiful crystals will soon start to form on the
charcoal or stone.

HAVE FUN WITH THESE RECIPES, BUT ALWAYS BE SAFE!

So glad you checked into this site!!  Please take the
time and go to the designated websites for science that
I have included.  Please e-mail me with any questions.
