SALVETE DISCIPULI ET DISCIPULAE!

LATIN I

You have started the year learning "Barcam Remiga", memorizing vocabulary words and finding out how English grammar relates to Latin.  I hope this will be a successful year for you all.

You have been assigned a project- an ABC Notebook - which is due October 4th.  Using the Roman alphabet, find 2 Latin words that begin with each of the letters.  Illustrate the words with drawings, pictures cut from magazines, or clip art.  Near the picture print the Latin word and its English meaning.  Bind all the pages together.  Be neat.

There is a vocabulary quiz on p. 21 on 9/24.  You are moving into Lesson III and will be learning more new words and grammar.

LATIN II

You are reviewing the vocabulary and grammar from Latin I, but will begin to receive new material very soon.

The story of Aeneas is the focus of the next several lessons.  You will have a project related to the stories that will be assigned soon.

LATIN III

You are reviewing the vocabulary and grammar from Latin I and II.  You will continue this review for about another two weeks, but will begin to get new material also.   The grammar gets more difficult, but you will find it easier if you keep up your notes.

Your stories are revolving around the Caecilian family from ancient Rome.  You will find bits of culture and history in the stories as well.

Your first paper is due on 9/27.  It is brief - 2 to 3 paragraphs on a famous Roman woman.  Choose one of the Roman women mentioned in the story on pages 17-18.  The paper should be typed, double-spaced, and in MLA format.  A listing of sources should be included.

LATIN IV

You are studying the life and times of Julius Caesar while translating his "Gallic Wars".  You will finish this unit soon and will begin the study of the Roman writer Pliny the Younger.  There will be letters about the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and his escape from the volcanic eruption.  There will also be a ghost story written by Pliny just in time for Halloween.

There will be a project related to Pliny and his letters on the eruption of Vesuvius.

LATIN V

My faithful two students!

You are working on etymologies independently.  We wil begin the "I, Claudius" series this week and continue throughout the year.

Soon you will begin your study of Catullus and his poetry.
