The Nansemond River High School visual arts curriculum reflects the Virginia Visual Arts Standards of Learning and strives for a high-quality program that progresses in complexity through each of the levels offered.
Throughout a student’s visual arts education, specific content is presented which includes visual communication and production, cultural context and art history, judgment and criticism, and aesthetics. It is our goal to provide students with multiple means of expression as well as analytical skills to evaluate information conveyed by images and symbols.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
• Select and use art media, subject matter, and symbols for expression and communication.
• Know the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design and how they are used in the visual arts.
• Solve visual arts problems with originality, flexibility, fluency, and imagination.
• Understand the relationship of the visual arts to history and culture.
• Use materials, methods, information and technology in a safe and ethical manner.
• Perceive, reflect upon, and evaluate the characteristics, and merits of their work and the work of others.
• Identify, analyze, and apply criteria for making visual aesthetic judgments.
• Develop a personal awareness and philosophy regarding the nature, value and meaning of the visual arts.
ART 1 ART FOUNDATIONS
Art 1 is a basic course open to all students with a serious interest in exploring art as a possible career choice, to further there own skills in making and understanding art, and to gain an appreciation of art to enhance their lives. Focus is on the introduction /re-introduction of art concepts, drawing techniques, improving observation and problem solving skills, while encouraging the continued development of individual artistic skills.
ART 2 INTERMEDIATE
• Pre-requisite course:
• Must have successfully completed Art 1 with a “C” or better.
• Must have the recommendation of the Art teacher.
• Must have had good attendance and shown interest and enthusiasm with a strong desire to further their art skills and understanding.
OBJECTIVES:
The objectives will emphasize the importance of content, concepts, and skills involved in the creation of original works of art. They will enhance student understanding of the ways in which art functions within a multicultural society. The student will extend and refine their abilities to investigate and respond to the visual arts. Students will maintain a portfolio and select representative work to take to the next level of study. Students will be required to participate in contest designs, art shows, and a variety of venues that will encourage their creativity and provide an outlet to showcase their talents.
ART 3 ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE
• Pre-requisite Course.
• Must have successfully completed Art 2 with a “C” or better.
• Must have the recommendation of the art teacher.
• Should exhibit a strong desire to gain additional art skills.
OBJECTIVES:
The student will continue the emphasis on development of their abilities to organize and analyze visual arts content, concepts, and skills in creating works of art. The focus on art history, critical evaluation, and aesthetics is increased, and includes cultural and stylistic issues and creative problem solving. Study at this level affords students the opportunity to develop a personal direction in the production of their works of art or to further academic study in the visual arts. There is a continued emphasis on building their own body of work for their portfolios to be carried forward to the next level.
ART 4 ADVANCED
• Pre-requisite Course
• Must have successfully completed Art 3 with a “C” or better.
• Must have the recommendation of the art teacher.
OBJECTIVES:
The Advanced Art level reinforces competence and confidence in skills of analysis, evaluation, and creation of works of art. Content and concepts associated with art criticism and aesthetics are central to the refinement of art production skills, and the student-directed approach at this level richly enhances personal expressive abilities. The student will continue to maintain a portfolio, and the culminating portfolio must give evidence of quality, concentration, and breadth of work produced throughout the high school art program.
PORTFOLIO DRAWINGS SIX CATEGORIES OF ART
Each student in Art I-IV is required to create a portfolio piece in each of the following categories, for each nine week grading period.
ANY SUBJECT YOU MIGHT CHOOSE TO DO FOR YOUR ARTWORK WILL FALL INTO ONE OR MORE OF THESE SIX CATEGORIES.
1. ARCHITECTURE:
Architecture refers to man-made structures, buildings, bridges, and constructions. These do not occur naturally but have been put in place by man.
2. NATURE:
Nature is anything that occurs, grows, and evolves naturally. Plants, trees, rivers, landscapes, insects, animals, etc.
3. FIGURE:
The “human” figure/body. Can be the entire figure or just part of it for study.
4. ANIMAL:
Animal, insect, reptiles & birds.
5. GRAPHICS:
This has to do with using “lettering” in your artwork. Not just “Calligraphy”, or “Graphiti”, but how graphics are used in advertising and on products. Graphics appear on tee shirts, store fronts, road signs, etc. All this lettering is designed to serve the purpose of communicating a message.
6. STILL LIFE:
A still life is a drawing of a collection of objects, arranged by the artist, or already found in an interesting arrangement.
• All assigned drawings are to be completed as homework, and handed into the teacher each Friday.
• All portfolio drawings are to be polished, finished drawings with light & shadows, textures, and details appropriate to the drawing.
• The finished product should have gained you valuable visual information and practice while providing you with artwork suitable for matting and display.
