5th May, 2008
Dear Parents,
Can you believe there are only four more weeks of school? The year has flown by, and now we are in the final run-up. Tomorrow we take Reading SOL; Math is on Tuesday 13th. We have been doing, and will continue to do, a lot of practice and review; this is not terribly exciting but it needs to be done. The questions are often worded in a way difficult to understand with difficult vocabulary, so it is important that there be as few surprises as possible.
In Math, we will mostly be getting ready for the SOL test. We will practice much that we have learned this year ready for the SOLs. It would be very helpful if you could review some basic concepts (subtraction, multiplication, division) at home, too.
As noted above, the Reading SOL is tomorrow; once that is done we will do more on the Jean Fritz books and leveled readers.
On a much pleasanter note, Colonial Day is Friday, 23rd May. Planning is well under way. There are a myriad of things to do, from providing food to helping with games. Expect to hear from one of our coordinators soon; if you don’t hear and you want to help, please contact me and I’ll forward your number. Your child will need a “Colonial” costume; we will send home a sheet with suggestions this week.
In Science we will finish our Plant unit with experiments and planting seeds. The unit test will be Monday 12th. The next units, until the end of the school year, will be Ecosystems and Adaptations. Also on a Science note, if the weather is good I will be taking the big (borrowed) telescope to the PTO camp-out on Friday. Assuming no clouds, there will be a couple of good planets to see and a nice early crescent moon. Please feel free to take your own telescopes and binoculars; we can have a Beeks Star Party, too!
