26th May, 2009

Dear Parents,

As the end of the school year gallops towards us, we are busy finishing the curriculum and planning for a number of other activities. We will be busy right up to the last day, with a packed schedule of lessons and other fun activities, like Colonial Day and Field Day. The remainder of this week will be a normal schedule, but next week we have two days of non-standard teaching – Field Day on Tuesday 2nd June and Colonial Day on Friday 5th.
In Math, unit 9, working on the relationship between decimals, fractions, and percentages, is done and we will spend the rest of the year picking through the last parts of the Everyday Math Program for relevant and interesting lessons. I have started a data collection project with my group, which will probably take several days.
In Reading, we are reading a selection of novels – The Secret Garden, a good adaptation of the Frances Hodgson Burnett classic, and The White Mountains by John Christopher. Some students are also reading Captain Underpants, a surprisingly sophisticated cartoon-style novel.
The Lucy Calkins writing program is continuing with the focus on Fiction writing. This has really fired up some of the children, as we focus on character, motives, and “expanding the moment” in the story’s events. There will be no spelling this week; the last spelling of the year will be next week.
The Social Studies curriculum is now complete, except for Colonial Day, which has been scheduled for Friday 5th June. Planning is well under way. If you would like to help in any way, with food preparation, serving, paper goods, games, etc. please let Alison Turk or Suzanne Ducker know, or me. One of the highlights of the day is the dressing up; we have discussed this with the students but on the back of this letter you will find some cheap and easy suggestions to help you find appropriate clothes. Of course, if you cannot find anything, we keep a small stock of girls’ and boys’ clothing that can be borrowed for the day.
Mrs. Williams will take over the Ecosystems unit in Science. That will enable me to teach the last short unit on Virginia Resources. Quite a lot of this has actually been covered in Social Studies earlier in the year but we will be focusing on some of the vocabulary and also on watersheds.
The Beeks Spring Fair is next weekend, on Sunday 31st from 12-5pm. Raffle tickets went home Friday and are due back this week; also if you still have any items for the raffle “theme baskets” please send them in as soon as possible. 4th grade’s theme is “Movie Night”.
Finally, there are a few class photos left. If you would like one, they are $10, available on a “first come, first served” basis.

Important Dates:

    31st May    Spring Fair.
    2nd Jun.    Field Day.
    5th Jun.    Colonial Day.

Sincerely,

Clare Law
