Weekly Letter
May 12, 2008

Once again, I would like to express my sincere thanks for the wonderful surprises and your thoughtfulness throughout Teacher Appreciation Week.  You all are the best!  I hope all of you mothers out there enjoyed a loving, restful day yesterday!

PALs testing will continue this week.   We took the spelling portion of the test last week and I am about half way through the individual word lists.  I will finish those up and will begin reading with each child next.  I will have a half day sub. on Thursday so that I can do some of this testing out of the room.

Continue encouraging your child to read each night for at least 20 minutes.  Many of the children have reached their goal of 60 nights of reading already and will be receiving invitations to our 2nd grade sleepover.  The sleepover is scheduled for May 23rd and I will count reading up until that day.  Children with less than 60 nights of reading will not be invited to the sleepover and we will hold firm to that.  Look for a volunteer letter and sign up to come home later this week.  If you would like to help out with the sleepover in some way this is your chance!  We always appreciate whatever help you can give.

We have planned a fun field trip for Friday, May 23rd.  Our class, along with Mrs. Wiggert’s first grade class, will be walking to Ethan Beliveau’s house for a picnic and a tour of his newly family designed and built tree house.  We plan to leave school around 11:15 and will return by 2:00.  Your child will need to wear good walking shoes and will need to bring a long a packed lunch and drink.  Thank you Beliveau family for having us!

Our learning for the week:
Language Arts:  We will be reading a Breakthrough book called Wonders of the World.  This is a non-fiction book about many famous and exciting places around our globe, including the Great Pyramids and the Great Wall of China.  We will also enjoy a story called Moses Goes to a Concert.  We will write and draw what music inspires in us.  We will finish up learning our cursive letters and will begin to write short paragraphs and letters in cursive to put it all into practice.

Math:  Are you ready for this?  Its multiplication and division all week!  The children will make a set of fact triangles with these facts on them and will explore multiplication and division fact families.  They will be introduced to the products table and will practice using it.  Keep practicing +/- math facts at home a little each day.

Science:  We have completed our science SOLs for the year so we will begin reviewing all of our science concepts covered this year, specifically scientific skills like classification, observation, interpretation and life cycles.

Social Studies:  We will look at Egyptian architecture and how it is reflected in our world today.  We will also learn a little more about mummies and the mummification process.

Important Dates to Remember:
May 15 – Books for Breakfast
May 22 – Early Release 1:00
May 23 – Field Trip, Sleepover
May 26 – No School, Memorial Day
May 27 – Field Day
May 30 – Last Day of School

Have an amazing week!
Mrs. Jennifer Salyers
