Dear Parents,

Below you will find a list of the SOLs that will be covered during the third nine week grading period in first grade. If you have any questions, please contact me!

This site will be updated each grading period.  For current news, please check out our weekly newsletters located in the FROG notebook.

THIRD NINE WEEKS

Oral Language:

SOL 1.1 Uses time indicating words (first, next, last, etc.) when retelling stories and events

SOL 1.2 Begins to ask for clarification and explanation of words and ideas.

Word Study:  

SOL 1.4  Counts sounds in words and makes rhymes

SOL 1.6  
•Uses consonant blends (cr, sl, pl, etc.) and beginning digraphs (th, sh, ch, wh) to decode single-syllable words while reading
•Uses knowledge of compound words in reading
•Uses short vowel sounds to spell single-syllable words
•Uses long vowel patterns with silent e to spell single-syllable words

SOL 1.12  Uses correct spelling for phonetically regular words while writing
    

Reading:

SOL 1.7  Uses meaning clues and language structure to expand vocabulary when reading by:
•Using knowledge of sentence structure
•Using titles
•Using knowledge of the topic to read words
•Rereading and self-correcting

SOL 1.8  Reads familiar stories, poems and passages with fluency and expression

SOL 1.9  Reads and understands grade level fiction and nonfiction material by:
•Asking and answering who, what, when, where, why, and how questions about what is read
•Retelling events using beginning, middle, and end
•Identifying important events

Writing:

SOL 1.11  Prints legibly using spacing in sentences.

SOL 1.12 Writes to communicate ideas:
•Focuses on topic
•Uses descriptive words
•Uses ending punctuation
•Forms simple regular plurals using –s and –es
•Uses –ed and –ing forms of verbs

Math:

SOL 1.4  Recognizes and writes numbers 0-100

SOL  1.12  Measures length and weight with non-standard units

SOL 1.14 Compares the weight of two objects using a balance scale

SOL 1.16  Draws, describes, and sorts triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles

SOL 1.17  Identifies and describes examples of triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles

SOL  1.20  Sorts objects according to color, size, shape, and thickness

SOL 1.21  Recognizes, describes, continues, and creates a variety of patterns

Science:

SOL 1.1   Classifies objects or events according to attributes or properties such as color, shape, texture, and size

SOL 1.5  
•Investigates and understands that animals, including people, have life needs including air, food, water and  suitable space to live
•Classifies specific physical characteristics:  hair, fur, feathers, scales, shells
•Identifies animals by other characteristics such as wild/tame, water homes/land homes
            
          
SOL 1.7  Investigates and understands the relationship of seasonal change and weather to the activities and life processes of plants and animals

Social Studies:

SOL 1.2  Describes contributions of American leaders: Washington and Lincoln
SOL 1.3  Identifies major holidays such as Presidents’ Day
SOL 1.5  Makes a simple map using a map legend and symbols

SOL 1.6 Describes effects of location, climate, and physical surroundings on lifestyle       (food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation)

SOL 1.11 Identifies patriotic symbols: American flag, bald eagle, Washington Monument, and Statue of Liberty








                About Your Teacher:  

My name is Jeanette Wiggert.  I am beginning my 27th year of teaching.  Over the years I have taught children in many grades, and I adore first graders!  My husband’s name is John and we have two daughters.   This is my twelth year of teaching at Margaret Beeks. I am excited about beginning a new school year and look forward to getting to know your family.  First grade is a year of discovery and is a lot of fun!
