I hope that you had a great Mother's Day. The children were very excited about their plants and cards.
We finished part of our testing last week and the class did a great job. We will continue with testing through out this week as well.
Thank you so much for your more than generous gifts. I feel more than appreciated! It has been a pleasure working with you and your children this year. I am grateful to have such a wonderful group of families to work with!

*Language Arts*
*This week I will be testing for reading levels each morning. We will be working with the “ow” chunk and will be practicing our dictionary skills. We will be reviewing map skills and discussing edible and non-edible plants.
*Remember to practice your weekly words each night. Please go back and review the past weekly words.
*Break Through to Literacy:
Our featured book this week is Did you Know?
*Handwriting:
We will continue to practice letter formation and spacing for the remainder of the year.
*Writer’s Workshop: This week we will revise our work by adding dialog.
*Mathematics*
Our math lessons will involve work with fractional parts of a whole, symmetry, and container capacity.
*Please practice fact triangles for a few minutes each night. Students should be able to quickly recall addition and subtraction facts 1-10 before entering second grade!
*Science/Social Studies*
FOURTH NINE WEEKS
*Science SOLS:
1.1 Observes and communicates data with raphs, pictures, writing, and numbers.
Makes predictions and draws conclusions.
1.8 Identifies natural resources.
Describes factors that affect air and water quality.

1.3 Identifies people and events associated with Independence Day.
1.7 Explains the differences between goods and services and buyers and sellers.
1.8 Explains how people make choices because they can not have everything they want.
1.9 Recognizes that people save money for future purchases of goods and services.

About Your Teacher:
My name is Jeanette Wiggert. I am beginning my 26th year of teaching. Over the years I have taught children in many grades, and I adore first graders! My husband’s name is John and we have two daughters. This is my eleventh year of teaching at Margaret Beeks. I am excited about beginning a new school year and look forward to getting to know your family. First grade is a year of discovery and is a lot of fun!
