Dear Parents:
Although a short week, we have been quite busy in third grade!!! We had our first unit assessments this week and the children performed quite nicely! Graded papers can be found in the divided sections of your student’s MOOSE. At the end of each unit we will staple our papers together and send home! With the exception of Math Benchmark tests, all other tests are sent home. I will go over our Unit 1 Math test at our first conference together.
Attached is a note about our first conference together to discuss your AWESOME children. Please pick your top 3 choices and I will try and accommodate each of your requests! We will discuss the year so far, as well as go over various assessments we have been giving in the classroom!
Our classroom community is coming together nicely! Third grade is not only a time to grow academically but also emotionally, socially, as well as civic minded citizens of our school!
MATH
We will bein Unit Two of the Everyday Math Series which covers adding, subtracting and whole numbers. We we occasionally supplement the math series with outside materials in order to meet the State of Virginia Standards of Learning. In addition to the regular curriculum, challenge activities will be available to students who complete assignments early (Sudoku, Math Games, etc.)
READING and LANGUAGE ARTS
We will begin PALS testing this upcoming week. Hopefully we will complete the testing before conferences and will be able to share the results from this assessment. The students also recently took a STAR reading test on the computer which determines their Accelerated Reading level for the library. I am asking that the students check out atleast 1 book on this level and read and test on this book before the end of the 9 weeks. Typically during the 9 weeks I like to see the students read and test on atleast 4 AR books.
In class we have been discussing story features such as setting, characters, and plot and solution. We have been reading lots of books together and making connections with text to text, text to self, and text to world. The students have been introduced to author’s purpose and reader’s response. We will continue to focus on these elements as we add even more things to think about as we read!
In addition, we have begun to learn and practice language skills! We are focusing on sentences. Lots of us need to remember to use capital letters and the correct puncuation!
SCIENCE
We are wrapping up Unit 1 on Living Things this week and will begin Unit 2 on Life Cycles next week. If anyone finds a caterpillar they would like to send in please do!!!
SOCIAL STUDIES
Maps and Globes continue to be our focus in the next couple weeks. We will learn about all parts of a map and compare to globes. Our study of continents and oceans will begin soon!
As always, please feel free to contact me at 951-5700 or klinkenhoker@mcps.org with any concerns or questions that you have. My priority is to make sure your child is happy and successful in third grade! Have a great weekend!

Our first full week of school went smoothly and the kids are doing a fantastic job getting acclimated to third grade!!! We continue to focus on setting up routines, procedures, rules, consequences, rewards, problem solving, and getting to know each other. Our classroom community is coming together nicely as we work on the curriculum in cooperative groups as well as solo endeavors.
Please help your child develop responsible learning habits by checking and initialing his/her planner EVERY evening and looking through the MOOSE notebook for homework, graded work, flyers, forms, etc. Your child should be able to tell you what his/her homework is for each day. The reading log is also a part of your child’s homework- each student should be reading for at least 15-20 min. a night. Of course, students can always read more! The reading material is free choice – so have fun with that! Once again, please help your child fill out the log so that it becomes a comfortable routine. This log should be signed EVERY evening and will be checked in class the following morning.
Your help and participation with all of these procedures, assignments, and responsibilities is greatly appreciated! I couldn’t do it without you! Thanks for your support. I am absolutely enjoying getting to know this amazing group of kids!!!
