The school year is flying by, we are already close to the 100th day of school. We have been so busy in art class this 9 weeks. Here is an overview of what we have been studying and upcoming projects.
Kindergarten has been learning about the season Winter. We have been creating Cardinals "our state bird" using a variety of printmaking techniques. We created birds out of clay and were inspired by visuals of birds that we might see in our backyard, for example goldfinches, cardinals, blue jays, blue birds, etc...
In the month of February we will start a "Winter Sunset" painting project and a "Snow Globe Penguin" project. While painting we will learn what happens when "warm" & "cool" colors are mixed together.
In First Grade we have been busy creating papier mache penguins. We are on our 3rd week and should finish soon. I plan on displaying their penguins here at school for a short while and then they will be bringing them home.
In the month of February we will be creating "Snowmen People" using a variety of painting techniques. We will also learn about bears and which ones hibernate and which one do not. The students will create a bear of their choice and a habitat for them.
The Second Grade students have been busy creating Native American inspired projects to tie in with their classroom unit. We looked at pottery from New Mexico and created clay coil pots. We painted and decorated our coil pots, they look great. We have just started to make our own version of Kachina Dolls, inspired from the Navajo Indians.
The third grade students have been busy creating African Mali Masks. We looked at a variety of masks from all over Africa. Each student designed a mask that was part animal and part human. See if you can guess the animal/animals characteristics when they bring home their projects. I hope to start them on a
3-D Mali project before finishing this unit.
The 4th grade students have been busy weaving on a clay loom. We looked at examples of Native American weavings and created a loom out of clay that we painted and decorated after weaving using a variety of yarns. We are currently finishing our Native American portraits using mixed media. We looked at the 1830's artist/painter George Catlin and his many portraits of Native Americans for inspiration. We learned that he painted over 500 portraits of Native Americans in just over 2 years of traveling out west.
The 5th grade students have been working on a Fish/Ocean unit. We created clay slab fish, one to keep and one for an ocean mural to be displayed in the school office. The students are very excited and are doing such a wonderful job. We are currently working on a "stuffed fish" project using a variety of paper collage.
