Here are some updates from the week of January 4th-January 8th from Mrs. Charles class. Welcome back to the second part of the school year! I hope you all had a nice and relaxing break. It’s been a very chilly start for the year. Please make sure your child is adequately dressed for the weather.
Also in our class news we are sad to say that our classmate, Alreniti, has moved back to Washington, D.C. This week we wrote her letters wishing her good luck at her new school. Fortunately because we lost a student we also gained one! This week we welcomed Ethan to our classroom. Ethan joins us from the New School and has been a great new addition to our class!
Important Dates:
January 15th- End of the 2nd Nine weeks
January 18th- Schools Closed (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)
January 19th-20th- Schools Closed (Teacher Workdays)
January 29th- Early Release
Language Arts: In Language Arts this week we meet daily in our reading groups. This week I assigned each group a chapter book they are to read independently and answer questions after they read. They will be reading these chapter books in class on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Also in reading groups, I am meeting daily to focus in on finding the main ideas, author’s purpose and other specific reading skills. We are reading A-Z books during this time and on Fridays we will be testing their comprehension over the books. This week in Writing we wrote about what we did over the break, a creative Roll-a-story and we wrote Alreniti a letter. Please ask your child what they are writing about in their Roll-a-story! They are a work in progress.
Math: On Tuesday this week the students tested over Unit 6. We were supposed to test before break but due to the weather we did not have the chance. I sent home Unit 7 Family letter on Tuesday. On Wednesday the students took a Mid-year assessment in class to assess what skills I need to reinforce from the past nine weeks. We are now beginning Unit 7 which spirals back to Multiplication and division.
Science: In Science our unit of study is Biomes. We are finished with deserts and we are now onto Rainforests. We are learning about plants, animals and the climate in the rainforest. Ask your child to tell you three animals that live in the rainforest.
Social Studies: We are beginning a new unit in Social Studies focusing in on Ancient Greece and Rome! This is a fun unit! We will enjoy traveling back in time to see where some of our modern day architecture, sports and government come from!
Star of the Week:
Andy was our Star of the week student! He brought in lots of pictures of his family his favorite book Harry Potter! Andy’s parents wrote one of the most heart felt letters to him, it was very sweet! We also learned that Andy will be going to Disney World soon; it was his favorite Christmas present. Our next star of the week will be Zamora
As always I want to thank you for reading our weekly letter and participating in your child’s education. Try to stay warm this weekend!
Thank you,
Mrs. Charles
