I want to take the time to thank you all for all of the nice treats I have received this week for teacher appreciation!  My husband and I have enjoyed all of the dinners provided by the room parents!  I really am grateful for the warm gestures of the flowers as well!  It has been a wonderful year, I can’t believe it’s almost over.

Language Art:  In Language Arts we continue to read in our novels daily.  The students will continue to have Language Arts but I am giving them more time in class to complete them so they will not be forced to complete them at home for homework.  The students will not have spelling during SOL’s.  Next week will be our last spelling test of the year.  In preparation for our May 14th SOL, we have been and will continue to prepare by taking practice tests and going over test taking strategies.  We will take our last practice test in the computer lab sometime next week.  Please make sure your child comes to school on Thursday, May 14th well rested and energized for the big test!

Math:  While we continue to review in Math, the students took the Unit 11 Checking Progress in class last week.  They were allowed to use any resource they had, with the exception of their neighbor.  We will do the same for Unit 12 because we are skipping a few lessons in order to finish up in time to review for the Math SOL.  Most of the homework being sent home is strictly for review purposes.

Science:  Last week the students began learning about light.  We have discussed and demonstrated terms such as refraction, reflection, opaque, and transparent.  I am teaching this unit and also beginning to review for the SOL.  Next week we will finish light and have an open book test next Friday.  Light was our last Unit of study.  We will then thoroughly review 4th and 5th grade Science materials. For the past month I have been reminding the students to review each night, please make sure your child is reviewing because we are working on practice tests in class and I will be taking some of them for a grade so the material should to be fresh in their minds!

Social Studies:  Today the students took their final test in Social Studies which covered the Civil Rights Movements and the four famous Virginians.  We will be studying the three branches of government and the function each branch.  We will start it on Monday and have an open book quiz the following Monday.  The remainder of our Social Studies curriculum will be focused on reviewing 4th and 5th grade Virginia Studies.

I would like to congratulate Alexander for wining the D.A.R.E. essay contest for our class, great job Alexander!  Also congratulations to Zach who was the runner up for our class.   Thank you to all the parents who came to the D.A.R.E. graduation, D.A.R.E. has taught our student invaluable lifelong lessons!

Although it is hard to believe we have less than 30 days left to go, please remember it is crucial for the students to stay focused while they are at school.  It is also important to have your child at school everyday for the next few weeks because we are reviewing imperative material.  I also ask that you talk with your child about how they are feeling about the up coming tests.  I want each student to feel confident going into each of the four tests so I need your help too!  As always I want to thank you for taking part in your child’s education.

Mrs. Charles
