Week of May 12-16,2008
Dear Families,
Below you will find information which should help you to know what your child is currently studying, and also you may find news for school functions, etc.
Language Arts:
Written Language: We continue our writing, using journals and also creating products for publication. We have officially begun our writer's portfolios. Student have entered various sorts of writing assignments thus far.
Independent Reading Work: The next AR will be due May 15th.
Spelling: Spelling continues. New units are assigned on Thursdays, and packets are due on the following Thursday. Please check your child's packet on Wednesday night for accuracy and completeness. The next packet is due Thursday, May 15, 2008. Please note, the entire packet is to be submitted. Students have a place in their agendas where they can copy the list of words, so they can be reviewed daily, in case the packet is left at school. Due to our reviews for SOL tests, we will not have any more spelling quizzes, but will work on packets each week.
Reading: Please ask your child what novel they are reading for class and for a brief oral summary every week.
Math: Knowing multiplication facts efficiently is the key to accurate computation. Keep practicing those facts! We are continuing our preparation for the Math SOL which is Thursday, May 15th!
Science: We are doing complete reviews of 4th and 5th grade topics taught in Science. It is imperative that your child continues to review the information packets at home. Some of our reviews are graded.
Social Studies: We are diving into our full review activities of all Virginia Studies information taught in both 4th and 5th grades. Your child should continue their review activities at home. Some of our review activities we do at school are graded.
Other info:
Bullying Prevention is a focus for Margaret Beeks and other Montgomery County schools. Bullying can be defined as follows: Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean things or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending him or herself. Bullying can take the form of physical hitting, verbal harassment, spreading false rumors, intentional social exclusion, and sending unkind messages on cell phones or over the internet. We are helping all students to learn to recognize bullying when they see it or experience it, and are teaching them how to handle the situation so that it can be addressed by adults.
If you could spare a few tissue boxes, we would greatly appreciate the donation! Thanks to those who were able to send a few to our class!
Early Release will be Thursday, May 22nd.
I am hopeful you can encourage your child to review and study their note packets for both science and social studies daily, for 15-20 minutes, seven days a week. In the past years, my students who were steady in their efforts outside of school in this regard were very successful on their Science and Social Studies tests, and certainly felt fully confident when taking the tests. Please also know that we do not review this information in the same manner at school, so it should not feel too repetitive, yet by reviewing on their own, it will help your child be more successful in the classroom activities we do utilize for review.
We are scheduled for these dates for SOLS:
May 8th, May 15th, May 21st, and May 23rd.
The Reading test was May 8th!
Math is May 15th.
Science is May 21st.
Social Studies is May 23rd.
As you have noticed, due to the altered last day of school, now May 30th, we've adjusted our dates for talent show practices, and also the actual program at school. The program will be presented May 28th, from about 9:20-10:30ish. In keeping with our Beeks tradition, fifth graders are invited to check out early for the day, after our Talent Show, on the 28th! So, make your plans! All we need from you is a note from home as to with whom your child plans to leave with! If any choose to stay, that is fine, too. We plan a low key rest of the day.
Our usual Fifth Grade Promotion program is scheduled for the evening of May 29th, 6:00PM-about 8:30PM It is a nice way to wrap up your child's elementary school years!
Have a great week!
