Ms. Peterson’s Fifth Grade
Margaret Beeks Elementary
May 4-May 15, 2009
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Thank you so much for making me feel very special and appreciated during Teacher Appreciation Week last week! Your thoughtfulness is heartwarming!
As you know, we begin SOL testing this week. As with the writing Sols, I would like to offer the students a snack of healthy “brain food” before we begin each test. If you are able to supply any of the following, please let me know by Tuesday, May 5. We have a total of 19 children in our class.
Granola Bars
Grapes
Sliced apples
Oranges
Bananas
Thank you for your assistance!
SOLs!!!
Please be sure your child is studying their flash cards for at least 10 min every night. They should also be working in their study packets for an additional 30 min. each night.
SOL testing schedule:
Wednesday, May 6-Reading
Thursday, May 14-Math
Monday, May 18-Science
Thursday, May 21-Social Studies
Final Book Order!!!
Our final book order for the year is due May 8th. Please refer to the letter your child is bringing home. You may order on-line if that is convenient for you. This order form has many great deals and very large selection of great summer reading material. Be sure to check it out!
SUPPLIES NEEDED!!!
We have had a rash of sickness in our classroom since we have returned from spring break. If you are able to donate disinfectant wipes and hand soap, it would be greatly appreciated!
Accelerated Reader:
Students are expected to ALWAYS have a book to read in class, beyond their reading group novel. Students are expected to read an Accelerated Reader book and take a quiz. They need to pass at least three of the quizzes (in addition to their assigned novel group book) with a minimum of a 70% each nine weeks.
Language Arts:
We are continuing our novels on the Civil Rights issues.
We continue our unit on poetry. The students will be writing at least 5 poems in the different forms. Be sure to ask your child about their poems, I’m sure you will be impressed!
Please remind your child to take their time with their work and double check it before they hand their work in.
Math:
We are working through Unit 11-Volume and we will then begin Unit 12-Probability and Statistics.
We will plan to assess Unit 11 Friday, May 8.
Students are now receiving the entire unit’s study links in a stapled packet at the beginning of each unit. Students may work ahead if they feel comfortable doing so, but it is not expected.
We are completing practice math sols online weekly.
Expect a math quiz weekly. Please check your child's understanding and knowledge of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. They should know these well enough to provide answers very quickly when quizzed. Base knowledge of these facts is very important to their success in fifth grade. All concepts are much easier to learn if they do not struggle with recall of basic information.
Social Studies:
We are continuing our study of the Civil Rights Movement and important people in Virginia’s history. Please be sure your child is studying their sol flashcards nightly.
Science:
We are working through our unit on Light and Sound. Please be sure your child is studying their sol flashcards nightly.
