These are the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) that are being taught during the third nine weeks of school.  By the end of the nine weeks, your child should be able to successfully demonstrate the following skills.  If you have any questions, please contact us!

LANGUAGE ARTS

(READING)
The student:
* will continue to read a variety of fiction and nonfiction materials.
* will continue to read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction materials.
*will read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction.
*will read and demonstrate comprehension of biography and autobiography.
*Will read and deomonstrate comprehension of myths and legends.

(SPELLING AND WRITING)
The student:
*will apply word analysis skills when reading
*will edit writing for correct spelling
*will edit writing for correct grammar
*will maintain legible cursive handwriting

(COMPOSITION)
The student:
*will write short reports across all content areas
*will write letters across all content areas-narration, information, or explanation

Writing across the curriculum is oncgoing

MATHEMATICS

The student will
*compare two whole numbers between 0 and 9,999, using symbols <,>,or = and words(greater than, less than, or equal to).
*will recognize and use the inverse relationships between  multiplication/division to complete basic fact sentences.
*will divide regions and sets to represent a fraction
*will compare the numerical value of two fractions having like and unlike denominators, using concrete or pictorial models involving areas/regions, lengths/measurements, and sets.
*will recall the multiplication and division facts through the nines tables.
*will represent multiplication and division, using area and set models, and create and solve problems that involve multiplication of two whole numbers, one factor.
*will add and subtract with proper fractions having like denominators of 10 or less, using concrete materials and pictorial models representing area/regions, lengths/measurements, and sets.


SCIENCE

The student will study:
*the interrelationships of Earth/Space systems- Soil
*Resources: influences on species survival
*Earth Patterns, cycles, and change-Water Cycle
*Matter-Physical properties
*Scientific investigations

SOCIAL STUDIES

The student will:
*recognize the concepts of specialization and interdependence in the production of goods and services in ancient Greece, Rome, Mali, and the present.
*will explain how the contributions of ancient Greece and Rome have influenced teh present in terms of architecture, government, and sports.
*will develop map skills by
a)locating Greece, Rome, and West Africa
b)describing the physical and human characteristics of Greece, Rome, and West Africa
c)explaining how the people of Greece, Rome, and West Africa adapted to and/or changed their environment to meet their needs.
