Dear Families,

Below you will find a list of the SOLs that will be covered during the first nine week grading period in first grade. We are going to have a blast learning A LOT of things!!

This site will be updated each grading period.  For current news, please check out the weekly newsletters located in the FROG notebook.

FIRST NINE WEEKS
Language Arts SOLs:
Reading
1.4 Identifies and uses sounds by:
- Counting sounds in words
- Making rhymes
1.5 Shows an understanding of how print is organized and read.
1.6 Reads and spells by:
    -using beginning and ending sounds
    -using word patterns (cat, bat, sat)
1.7 Uses pictures when reading.
1.9 Reads and understands current grade-level materials.
Handwriting
1.11 Prints neatly using good letter formation and spacing in words.
Composition
1.12 Writes to communicate ideas by:
    -beginning sentences with a capital letter.


Math SOLs:
Number Sense
1.3 Counts forward to 100 by 1’s
    -forward to 100 by 5’s
    -forward to 100 by 10’s
1.3 Counts forward to 20 by 2’s
1.3 Counts backwards from 20 by 1’s

Science SOLs:
1.1  Scientific Investigation (using senses to observe)
1.4    Life Processes: Plant needs, parts, and characteristics
1.6  Earth and space systems  
-Identifies the sun as the source of heat and light that warms the land, air, and water.
-Explains how night and day are caused by rotation of the earth.

Social Studies SOLs:
Civics
1.10 Identifies and uses the traits of good citizenship.
Geography
1.4   Map skills
    -Identifies basic map symbols (land, water, cities, roads)
-Identifies and uses cardinal directions (north, south, east, west)
-Identifies the physical shape of the United States and Virginia.
-Identifies and locates Washington D.C and Richmond on a map.
History
1.3   Identifies the people and events associated with Columbus Day.
