Individual Course Syllabus

Course Title:    Art 1    Number:    9120

General
Course Description:    

Art 1 is an elective credit course open to students in grades eight through twelve.  Seventh and Eighth grade SOL’s will be covered within a more mature framework than would be used at the middle school level.

The course of study is designed to be an introduction to basic concepts of two and three-dimensional arts and crafts.  Hands on experiences reinforce the understanding of basic systems of drawing such as linear perspective, grid drawing, and freehand drawing.  Color Theory will be explored using a variety of media.



Course Requirements:    
Students will create works of art using a variety of media.  Tests covering artistic vocabulary and techniques of art will be given as needed.  Students must pay a fee of  $12.50, which covers most of the materials used in class.  Each student will be required to bring a #2 pencil.

Teacher
Expectations:    
In this course emphasis will be placed on developing a positive attitude, demonstrated by willingness to try all projects and to redo all or portions of projects when necessary.

The development of good work habits including respect for others, following proper clean up procedures and adherence to rule of safety.


Course Assessment
/ Evaluation:    
Evaluation will be based on student effort and attitude as well as evaluation of the finished product.
Written exams covering art concepts and vocabulary will be given.

7.6    Create the illusion of three-dimensional geometric and organic shapes through shading.
7.7    Create the illusion of action in two-dimensional design.
7.10 Follow safety procedures at all times.
8.2    Record the human figure with contour drawings.
8.3    Use line to create the effect of light and shade.
8.4    Use one and two-point perspective to create the illusion of depth as observed from one position in space.
8. 5 Use color to suggest depth.
8.7 Utilize art terminology.
8.13 Apply an understanding of composition and design to the display of art works.
8.16 Identify primary, secondary and tertiary colors of more than one color system.

General
Course Description:    

Art II is an elective open to students who have completed the proper pre-requisites.  This course emphasizes the development of drawing and painting skills.  Art and craft projects demonstrating use of elements and principles of design and skill development will be done as needed.





Course Requirements:    
Students will create works of art using a variety of media.  Tests covering artistic vocabulary and techniques of art will be given as needed.  A required fee of 12.50 covers most of the materials used in class.  Students will need a #2 pencil.

Students will be expected to explore a variety of drawing, painting and craft media.
Students will be expected to follow the rules of safety and good classroom behavior.
Course Assessment
/ Evaluation:    
Attitude and the development of good work habits including respect for others, following proper clean up procedures and adherence to rules of safety will be considered in evaluation.  More emphasis will be placed on craftsmanship and the development of viable finished products at this level.

General
Course Description:    Studio Art is a studio course which offers further opportunities for in depth exploration of drawing and painting.  At this level students have greater input in the selection of projects and materials.

Course Requirements:    A required fee of $12.50 covers most of the materials used in class.  Students will need a #2 pencil.


Teacher
Expectations:    At this level students will be expected to devote more time to their projects to help refine their skills & techniques.
Course Assessment
/ Evaluation:    Commitment, craftsmanship, and acceptance of responsibility will be considered in evaluation. An end of course project will be required.

Course Description:    Crafts and Design is an elective credit course open to students in grades eight through twelve.    In this course, the students will create a variety of 3 dimensional projects.   They will learn about the origins and purpose of each craft to be created.

Course Requirements:    A required fee of $12.50 covers most of the materials used in class.  A list of scrap materials needed will be handed out at the beginning of the class for more variety in choices, such as old material, pop cans, newspaper, ect.
