Things went very well on Friday and I was very pleased. We have to add a practice to continue this progress. It will be this Friday (the 31st) from 9-1. I will let everyone go, and they don't have to be back until 5:30 for the game.
SPECIAL THANKS to all parents/family that helped make Friday's game a success. I appreciate it more than you will ever know.

For those that are unaware, our trip this year will be to Cincinnati. I am awaiting a phone call to change the date, due to the fact that without thinking I picked our first date with us coming back about an hour before the prom begins! As soon as I have the new date everyone will be notified, along with the price for each student going.

Beginning this month we are going to shift our focus a little bit in Concert Band Class. In an attempt to become all-around better musicians, we are going to work on our understanding of music itself, not just rehearsing various pieces for our concerts. We will achieve these goals in the following ways:
1) We are going to begin studying music theory at a much more in-depth rate. There will be written work that is going to be factored into every students six weeks grade, along with the normal playing assessments. (SOL’S II. 17 – 21, IAD. 21) As we begin to look at the very foundation of music itself, and see how music is actually formed, we can learn how to look at each piece as a whole – yet see the smaller parts and how they relate to each other.
2) Last year we began looking at scales and arpeggios, and this year we are going to take them even further. Every class will include some form of scale work and sight reading exercises. (SOL’S IAD.4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 14) Proficiency will be established and tested in the following keys:
Major Scales, arpeggios, and exercises in the following order:
Bb, Eb, Ab, C, G
Plus the Chromatic scale for each individual instrument.
The First Thirteen Percussion Rudiments
Student will demonstrate by playing them in an open-close-open format.
(SOL IAD.7)
By using these aspects, it will make it much easier to learn our concert pieces, as well as make us all-around better musicians with a better understanding of our instruments.
Beginning next year a large portion of our members will be required to audition for All-District Band, with the opportunity for everyone else to choose to go. By utilizing these techniques, all will be prepared to compete in All-District if they choose to.
