Reading
This class is designed to address the needs of students that have some form of reading difficulties. The main purpose is to address the needs in the areas of; phonemic awareness, phonetics, writing, reading fluency and comprehension. The class usually selects a book to be read at the beginning of each semester. Before they begin the reading of the book selected, they are given background-knowledge of the the topic or main theme. This is done by guest speakers, internet research or movie clips. The students create a new vocabulary list from the books that has been chosen for the class to read. This list is used for our spelling and vocabulary test. Periodically we do activities to note if the students comprehend the material that is read to them. The students are presently reading "Hawks Hill."
Monday- OCtober 28, 2009 The students will be given a new list of vocabulary words for this week. They will define the words.
This weeks words are the following:
1. curiosity- desire to investigate or learn
2. diversion- something that diverts or amuses.
3. emulate-to strive to equal or excel
4. fringe-something that is additional
5. immense-huge
6. patience-being patient
7. pragmatic-consequences of actions or beliefs
8. swallow-an act of swallowing
9. tribute-a gift or service showing respect
10. utter-express in unusual words.
Tuesday- October 27, 2009 The students will be reviewed on the phonetic rules for the first five words. They will then read and discuss story answering comprehension questions as they read. The students will complete be reading the third chapter.
Wednesday-October 28, 2009.
The students will complete an activity that will help them review their phonetic skills. They will then be given a practice spelling test on their vocabulary words for the week. After this, they will continue to read chapter 3 from their book. They will be expected to answer comprehension questions about the story as they read.
Thursday- October 29, 2009.
The students will be reviewed on their vocabulary word definitions. They will then complete a test on the definitions of their vocabulary words. The students will listen to a story that is related to Halloween. They will then be divided into groups to create their own story to be read to the class on Friday!
Friday-October 30, 2009.
The students will be given a quick review on the spelling patterns of the words they are using this week. They will then take a final spelling test on these words. After this is completed each group will read to the class the story they have created.

Monday October 26, 2009
The students will be given this weeks sight words to study. The students will write these words in their notebooks to study. After this is completed, they will read from their Wilson Reader Books pages 11-16.

Tuesday October 27, 2009
The students will review their sight words. This will be done with the use of flash cards and asking students to identify the word by random. After this is completed, the students will be divided into two groups. One group will work on comprehension, while the other group will work on decoding skills.
Wednesday, October 28, 2009. The students will be given a practice test of their sight words. The students will be provided with a visual aid of their sight words. The students will then be given a piece of paper that they must number 1 thru 14 on it. They will then listen to the sight word that is being pronounced and write down the word. This will help the students in the skills of identificaition and eye hand cordination. The words that do give the students problems will be assigned for spelling words this week. When all of the activities are completed, the students will be divided into their groups to continue working on material for comprehension and decoding.
Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009
The students will be reviewed on their sight words by the use of flash cards. After the review they will listen to stories that are related to the holiday of Halloween.
Friday October 30, 2009.
The students will take a final test on their sight words for the week. Each student will be given the opportunity to create a story that he or she will read to the class that is related to Halloween.

We have been reading the story "Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe. The students will start working on the pages of 156 and 157 in their Literature Workbook that is related to this story. When they are finished, the class will review their answers.

Due to the large amount of absences, the one student that was in class, completed a make-up test that he had not done yet.

The students will review the story of "Tell Tale Heart" and prepare for a test on the story. This test will be given to them tomorrow. After this is completed they will attempt to write descriptive sentences about what they think the character of the narator looks like.
Friday,October 30, 2009
The students will complete a short quiz on the story of the "Tell Tale Heart". They will then create a list of steps on a piece of paper of what they believe will be needed to complete in order to carve a pumpkin. Ms. Conley and I will carve a pumpkin and have them to write the steps as we do it. They will compare their final list with the one they wrote before the carving of the pumpkin.
