Reading
This class is designed to address the needs of students that have some form of reading difficulties. The main purpose is to address the needs in the areas of; phonemic awareness, phonetics, writing, reading fluency and comprehension. The class usually selects a book to be read at the beginning of each semester. Before they begin the reading of the book selected, they are given background-knowledge of the the topic or main theme. This is done by guest speakers, internet research or movie clips. The students create a new vocabulary list from the books that has been chosen for the class to read. This list is used for our spelling and vocabulary test. Periodically we do activities to note if the students comprehend the material that is read to them. The students are presently reading "Incident at Hawks Hill."
Monday- November 9, 2009 The students will be given a new list of vocabulary words for this week. They will define the words.
This weeks words are the following:
1.amphibian- any of a class of vertebrate animal.
2.blunder-mistake
3.consumption- using up
4.determine-set to fix conclusively or authoritatively.
5.ferociously- extremely intense.
6.instinct- natural aptitude.
7.mammary- glands
8.occurrence-something that happens
9.reptile- scaly vertebrates.
10.weaning- to free.
Tuesday- November 10, 2009 The students will be reviewed on the phonetic rules for the first five words. They will then read and discuss story answering comprehension questions as they read. The students will begin chapter 4.
Wednesday-November 11, 2009.
The students will complete an activity that will help them review their phonetic skills. They will then be given a practice spelling test on their vocabulary words for the week. After this, they will continue to read chapter 4 from their book. They will be expected to answer comprehension questions about the story as they read.
Thursday- November 12, 2009.
The students will be reviewed on their vocabulary word definitions. They will then complete a test on the definitions of their vocabulary words. The students will listen to and read chapter 4. They should complete this chapter by the end of the period.
Friday-November 13, 2009.
The students will be given a quick review on the spelling patterns of the words they are using this week. They will then take a final spelling test on these words. After this the students will be reviewed on Chapter 4 and prepare for a quiz on Monday.

Monday November 9, 2009
The students will be given this weeks sight words to study. The students will write these words in their notebooks to study. After this is completed, they will be divided into two groups one group will work on comprehension and the other will work on decoding.
This weeks sight words are:

Tuesday November 10, 2009
The students will review their sight words. This will be done with the use of flash cards and asking students to identify the word by random. After this the students will review their sounds and learn new sounds.
Wednesday, November 11, 2009.
The students will be given a practice test of their sight words. The students will be provided with a visual aid of their sight words. The students will then be given a piece of paper that they must number 1 thru 13 on it. They will then listen to the sight word that is being pronounced and write down the word. This will help the students in the skills of identificaition and eye hand cordination. The words that do give the students problems will be assigned for spelling words this week. When all of the activities are completed, the students will be divided into their groups to continue working on material for comprehension and decoding.

The students will be reviewed on their sight words by the use of flash cards. Read from their Wilson Reading Books.
Friday November 13, 2009.
The students will take a final test on their sight words for the week. The students will be given a short story that they will read from when called upon to read.

We are going to start to read the story, "How to Eat Fried Worms'. Last week the students were given seven words that they would use for their vocabulary words. They will review these words today and begin reading the story. Tomorrow they will have a spelling test on these words and on Wednesday they will have a definition test.
The following are the list of words.
1. seriously- requiring much thought.
2. casserole- a dish in which food is baked or served.
3. argue- give reason for or against
4. poison- a chemical that can injure or kill.
5. stupid- dull in mind.
6. smudge- to soil or blur by smearing or rubbing.
7. squirm- to twist like a worm.

The students will review their vocabulary words for spelling. They will then take a spelling test on the words. After this is completed they will be reviewed on the definition of these words for a quiz tomorrow. When all this is completed, they will continue to read the story.

The students will be reviewed on the definitions for their vocabulary words, they will then complete a quiz on these words. After this is completed, they will continue to read from the story. If time allows,they will complete a work sheet that is related to the story.
Thursday,November 12, 2009
The students will given the new list of vocabulary words. They will define these words. After they have completed this, they will do a complete character analysis of the main characters of Allan and Billy.
Friday,November 13, 2009
The students will reviewed on the spelling patterns of their vocabulary words. After this is completed they will complete a worksheet that relates to the story they are reading.
