Transition Services
Transition services assist students in the movement from school to the world of work and adult life. Giles County Schools in cooperation with the Department of Rehabilitative Services, Giles County Partnership, New River Valley Community Services, employers, community members, and college representatives work to assist students and their families to achieve a successful transition from school to work.

>>9th Grade
Students in the 9th grade are given the Career Scope, a vocational assessment that combines the student’s aptitude and interest to generate a career “blueprint” for the student. This is considered Phase I of the vocational assessment. The Career Scope assists with future educational and career planning that will help the student and their parents make appropriate decisions. The Transition Coordinator and Career Counselor administer the test. The transition Coordinator and Case Manager will review the results with the parents and student at the IEP meeting.

>>10th Grade
After review of the vocational assessment, the Transition Coordinator will recommend students to attend the Postsecondary Education Rehabilitation Transition Program (PERT) at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center. This is considered Phase II of the vocational assessment. These services are provided in conjunction with the Dept. of Rehabilitative Services. Students chosen to attend PERT are typically unsure of their interest or may need additional testing in their area of interest or may need additional testing in their area of interest. The PERT program in a 10 day experience for the student to explore their strengths and develop goals for their future. This is a no cost program for the families and the information gathered is a valuable for transition planning.
Students may also be referred to our local Workforce Center located in Narrows for summer career exploration programs.
New River Valley Community Services is an agency that serves clients with Mental retardation, mental illness, and substance abuse. A student requiring services from this agency could be referred at any time for the support. Services can sometimes be difficult to obtain due to funding issues, therefore, referral is recommended as early as possible.
Students also have the opportunity to explore the Giles County Technology Center. The Center offers a variety of programs such as Auto Technology, Drafting, Machine Shop, Building Trades, Welding, Electronics, Practical Nursing, and Cosmetology.

>>11th Grade
Students often find it difficult to get a job in our small community. At the 11th grade level, the Transition Coordinator can refer students to the Department of Rehabilitative Services and/or the Workforce Center. Through this referral students become clients of these programs and are offered a blanket of support for employment opportunities.
Students seeking postsecondary education are invited to attend informational meetings held in the fall and spring regarding services offered at the college level. Parents are encouraged to attend in order to obtain information regarding their role as the parent at the next level in their child’s education. Knowledgeable representatives from many of the areas universities are on hand to present information as well as answer any questions the student or parent may have.
During the 11th grade year, students have the option of taking classes at the Giles County Technology Center.  These  classes are offered in the morning as part of the student’s school day.

>>12th Grade
Students in the 12th grade receive services to help smooth the transition from school to work or college.
Some students will continue their work at Giles County Technology Center. These classes are offered in the afternoon as part of the student’s school day.
Some students have the opportunity to work with our local Workforce Center as they provide a work experience while the student is still in school.
Students may also receive assistance with college applications, SAT registration, ensuring accommodations, or job applications.

I am available daily from 11:15-3:35 to speak with students or parents regarding transition issues. If I can be of any assistance to you in thinking about and planning your child's future, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.
