9th grade

Read pages 19-39 in student handbook.  There will be a quiz on Tuesday.

8th grade:

We are reviewing the handbook and the rules of the classroom.
Students are finishing their pretests.

9th grade:
Students will write an introductory paragraph 7 sentences minimum.  The topic is "What award would I like to receive"  Do prewriting activities.

8th grade:
Students are reading library books.  Book report project will be due on Oct. 18.  Refer to handout about requirements.
9/25
9th grade:
Do the exercise on page 352, exercise 15 1-10.  Also have their paragraphs on the award they would like to receive.

8th grade:  Students should have their papers prepared on the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to them.
9/26
8th grade:

Do the worksheet on structuring paragraphs.  Answer the questions and rewrite the paragraph, eliminating unnecessary sentences.
Quiz--Friday on pronouns

9th:

Write the second paragraph of the body of the essay. Quiz on pronouns will be Friday.


10/3/07

all classes have been in the computer lab the past couple of days.
9th grade:
Tomorrow they will type their final drafts of their essay in the lab.

8th graders should be reading their library books, getting their book report project prepared.  Due date is Oct. 18.

10/4/07

8th grade:
Do the diagnostic test on page 329 in grammar and writing books, skill check A-D

10/8
8th grade:  
First period, write paragraph on page 38 using transitional words or phrases.  Choose one of the methods of organizations
2, and 7th periods do exercises 5,6,7, and 8 on pages 34-35

Reminder:  Book report projects are due Oct. 18.
9th grade:

Write thesis statements from various topic sentences.  These will be used to write a five paragraph essay.

8th grade:
Book report projects are complete!
Homework:  do pages 339 and 341 in grammar book, exercises 23,24,25,26

9th:
homework:  Do exercise 27 and 28 on pages 441 in grammar book

8th grade:
Write an introductory paragraph on "the person who has influenced my life".  The paragraph should have at least 5 sentences and a thesis statement.  This is the first paragraph of the essay.

8th and 9th graders will be in the computer lab the next 2-3 days working on ALS and Sol released test items.

10/23
8th grade:
Write the first paragraph of the body of the essay.  Write 5-7 sentences.  Topic---The person who has influenced my life the most

9th grade:
Homework---Exercises 2 and 3 on page 529 and ex. 12 on page 538 ---Verbs and principal parts of verbs

Friday will be computer lab day for 8th and 9th graders.

8th grade:
Write the second paragraph of the body of the essay.  Write at least 5 sentences.

Do exercise 4 on page 557 and exercise 6 (write the paragraph) on page 558 (subject and verb agreement)

9th grade:

8th grade:
homework:  Do exercises 1 and 2 in grammar exercise workbook on page 145, and do exercise 1 on page 146, subject/verb agreement

9th grade:
Do exercise 2 on page 123 in grammar exercise workbook, exercise 1 on page 125, and exercise 1 on page 126.  (4th period class should also do exercise 2 on page 126 (expressing time through tense)

8th graders

9th grade:

3rd period should complete their novels by Monday. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde
4th period will read through page 126 in War of the Worlds

We have been in computer lab for the past 2 days.  8th graders are working on descriptive paragraphs.  Write at least 10 details describing what a particular object feels, sounds, tastes, smells or looks like.

9th grade---Computer lab, punctuation

12/7
8th grade:
Do pages 51 and 52 in grammar exercise workbook, exercise 1 on each page.

9th grade:
4th period: ;  Make sure you have read The WAR of the Worlds; Book One.  There will be a test covering that section.
3rd period:   Read "The Interlopers"   THere will be a quiz covering recall and comprehension of the story.



12/11
8th grade:
Write sentences for each spelling word.  Define the last 10 words.  The sentences should contain context clues.

Study for quiz tomorrow on complete subject and complete predicate.  A good review page is 405 in grammar book.

9th grade:
Common usage problems:  Finish the worksheets on common usage by Friday.
Write an alternate ending to the story "The Interlopers"  The story should contain descriptive details.


1/7
8th grade:  Students will write definitions for spelling/vocabulary words.  Find other words using the prefixes we have talked about in class.  Spelling quiz will be Tuesday, Jan. 15

9th grade:  Read "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell.  Be prepared for a comprehension quiz tomorrow covering the story

8th grade:
Do diagnostic test on page 505, skill check a, b, d, and e

9th grade:
Read "The Scarlet Ibis" (page 552-564)  Make sure you read "Literary Analysis" and the author's bio.  Write down any and all vocabulary words you are unfamiliar with.  Be prepared for a check test covering the story.

We have begun studying research and how to format a research paper.  
Assignment-----Write a sample works cited page from information the students were given in class.  

8th grade:

9th grade:
Choose an African American and research that person's life.  What contributions did he or she make to African American culture?

Students should be prepared for a selection test on "The Necklace, and "The Harvest" tomorrow.
They should be well into their research projects.  Source cards are due tomorrow.

Multiple choice section of the SOL is tomorrow!!!The standardized test questions at the end of each chapter in the grammar book are excellent review items.

8th grade:

Read the story "I know Why the Caged Bird Sings",  page 32.  Be prepared for a quiz tomorrow on reading comprehension and recall of the story.

8th grade:
Homework---Read "Thank You, Mam, by Langston Hughes on page 170.  Be prepared Monday for a check test on recall and comprehensive of the story.

9th grade:
Read "The Cask of Amontillado" on page 5.  Be prepared for a check test Monday covering comprehension and recall.

4/1/08
8th grade:  Students are to define the vocabulary words from the two short stories, "I know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and "Thank You, Mam"  
Definitions and parts of speech should be on a separate sheet.  (There are 20 words)
When writing sentences, make sure you use context clues.

9th grade
4/1/08

Define words and write sentences for each word.  Use context clues to create your sentences.  When defining the word, see how the word is used in the context of the story.  (24 words)

8th grade homework

Read short story "Raymond's Run" beginning on page 286.  Read about the author as well as connecting to the literature and the background information pertaining to the story.  There will be a quiz on Tuesday.  WE will be in the computer lab on Monday.

9th grade:

8th grade:
Work in Sol prep workbook Reading Comprehension, pages 94-100 #1-30.

8th grade:  Write 3 cinquains.  Also do pages 1-4 in sol prep workbook.  
Poetry notebook is due May 15.

9th grade
homework:  Students have finished Act II of Romeo and Juliet.  Do questiona 1-7 at the end of Act II,page 815 and  questions 7 and 8 on page 816.

5/2
8th:  Find a ballad on the internet.  Do pages 5-10 in sol prep workbook.

9th: No homework.  We are listening to Romeo and Juliet.

5/7/08

8th grade:  Find a sonnet and put in the poetry notebook.  Also find your favorite poem, which has to include at least 14 lines.  
Poetry notebook is due March 16.   It must be colorful, decorative, illustrated with pictures or clip art and it has to have all the poems we've discussed in class.  The book may include 3 additional poems.

9th grade:  
Answer the questions at the end of Act III of Romeo and Juliet. (1-6)
Define the vocabulary words at the beginning of Acts III, IV, and V and write sentences for each word.  Due Friday.
Memorize at least 14 lines of a monologue or soliloquy in Romeo and Juliet.  Oral presentations will begin March 15.

8th and 9th graders will be in the computer lab tomorrow (5/8).


5/12/08

9th grade:
3rd period----fiinished Act IV of Romeo and Juliet--answer questions at the end of Act IV (1-6) page 857 and questions 1-9 page 858.

4th period is still reading Act IV of the play.  Do pages 153-156 in grammar exercise workbook.

8th graders had their reading sol today.    No homework.
