8/31
8th grade----we have been discussing the student handbook and going over the rules and expectations of the class.  Tomorrow I will give a pretest which will be basically in the format of an sol test to see how well they perform on this test and to let me know what areas we need to concentrate on.

When we finish the handbook, we will have a test on it. The date has not been determined.  There will be a quiz (in a week?) on those items that we have already discussed.  I will inform the students at least 3-4 days in advance.

9/6---8th grade---diagnostic test page 309 (nouns and pronouns)
Periods 1 and 4 do skill checks A-C, periods 6 and 7 do skill checks A and B
I will give a quiz covering the handbook (pages 1-55) on Friday of this week. (20 True/False)
The big test will be given next week which will be 50 questions

9th grade--finished diagnostic test today.(grammar concepts)  The pretest will be given next week

9/9--8th grade
Quiz today on handbook (15 questions true/false)
writing assignment at least a paragraph,can be longer---my pet peeve is...
due Monday

9th grade...

9/13--- 8th grade------Reviewing nouns and noun-forming suffixes
students must write 3 words for each noun-forming suffix

9th grade-----identifying direct and indirect objects. do exercises 20, 21, and 22 in grammar book

9/15---all classes  HANDBOOK TEST TOMORROW

9/26 8th grade
Students are reading their library books for their first book report which is due 10/17.  They have the book report handout which specifies the various activities included in the report project

Tonight's homework: Periods 1 and 4, define the first 20 words (spelling) on page 776; also do page 331 exercise 3-----------Periods 6 and 7, define the first 10 words on pg.776; do page 330, identifying the verb in each sentence

9th grade-----------do exercises on reflexive and interrogative pronouns

9/27
8th grade
Do pages 13 and 14 in grammar exercise workbook, do all of page 13 and ex. 1 on page 14

9th grade: do ex. 15, 18, 20 on pages352 and 355

9/30
8th grade:
Write a paragraph about the person who has influenced you or who has made a difference in your life.  The paragraph should include at least 3 reasons.  (We will take this paragraph  later and write a 5 paragraph essay including an introduction, 3 paragraphs in the body of the essay and a concluding paragraph)

Make sure you do some prewriting technique, preferably freewriting, brainstorming, or creating a web.  This is due Monday.

Continue to read your library book.  Book report is due on Monday, Oct. 17

10/10/11

8th grade:
unit test tomorrow (Oct. 11) covering nouns, pronouns,and pronoun case and verbs transitive and intransive, action and linking and helping verbs

9th grade:
unit test: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns
Be prepared to start their book report projects after the test.

10/17
8th grade
pages 555-557, exercises 2, 3, 4, write the key concepts in notebooks about subject/verb agreement

9th grade; do exercises 2, 4, 5, 6, on pages 573-579

10/24
8th grade----do pages 554-556 exercises 1,2, and 3 (6th and 7th periods)
1st and 4th periods---do principal parts of verbs pages 121-122 in grammar exercise workbook.

11/8
8th grade-----periods 1 and 4, pages 125-126 in grammar workbook
periods 6 and 7 page 568----subject/verb agreement

9th grade
finish reading "The Most Dangerous Game" and be prepared for a test tomorrow
write sentences for each vocabulary word

11/30--1st and 4th periods reviewing for the re-test which will be given on Friday.

6th and 7th periods--going over test items, depending on how well or poorly they did, they will test again on Friday.

12/12

homework periods 6 and 7
page 484-486 exercises 31 and 32 in grammar book
periods 6 and 7 will have spelling quiz tomorrow

12/13
9th grade----write final copy of the essay on conflict in the story "The Interlopers"

1/6-----8th grade students should be prepared to present an oral presentation of their book on Jan. 15.  They had the holiday to read and complete their books.  With this book report, the only writing will be 25 vocabulary words ( for periods 1 and 4) and 20 vocabulary words for Periods 6 and 7). These words should be unfamiliar to them; they will need to write the definition as well as a sentence for each word.

Tonight:  Write sentences for spelling words on page 776.

1/11/12
8th grade:
1 and 4 periods; rewrite the essay about basketball, final draft due tomorrow
6 and 7 periods, rewrite the paragraph on the ocean and write notes on page 492 and 493.

9th grade;
prepare book report projects; they are to make a book jacket which includes the summary and a biographical sketch about the author.  This is due on Jan. 27

8th grade 1/12
Spelling quiz tomorrow
