Art Study Notes

Vocabulary and Notes :  Chapter 6 – Arttalk

1.  Shape – element of art which is 2-D and encloses space.
2.  Form – element of art which is 3-D and encloses space.
3.  Free-form shape – shapes which are irregular and uneven.
4.  Geometric shape – shapes which are precise and defined by mathematical formulas.
5.  Highlights – where the most light is reflected.  Usually a small area of white in a drawing.
6.  Naturally occurring geometic forms – snowflake, honeycomb, sun, and moon
7.  Hologram – 3-D image created by a laser beam.
8.  Manufactured shape – Man made shape.
9.  Natural shape – Shape made by nature.
10.  Silhouette – 2-D shadow like shape.  Filled in outline drawing.
11.  Chiaroscuro – The arrangement of light and dark; developed by renaissance artist for the purpose of modeling or creating depth.
12.  Shading Techniques:  Blending, Stippling, Cross-hatching, hatching.
13.  3 parts of picture plane – Foreground, Middleground , background
14.  Foreground – area in a drawing or painting which is closest to the viewer.
15.  Middleground – area in the middle of a drawing or painting
16.  Background – area most distant from the viewer.
17.  Linear perspective – Mechanical way of showing depth using lines which converge to vanishing points.
18.  Vanishing points – where lines meet or converge on the horizon.
19.  Point of view – the angle from which you see something.
20.  Space – element of art which refers to areas in a drawing.
21.  Positive space – the area of the object itself
22.  Negative space – the area between and around the object.
23.  3 dimensions that we see in – Length, width, depth
24.  Explain how the eyes and brain enable us to see in 3-D?
The eyes see an object at slightly different angles. The brain causes these two separate and slightly different views to merge into one, resulting in a 3-D image.
25.  Atmospheric perspective – How the air or atmosphere affects how we see objects in the distance.

1. Earthenware, Stoneware, and Porcelain.- Clay bodies

5. Forcing air bubbles from the clay. - wedging

8. Condition of clay when it’s to firm to bend -leatherhard.
    
9. Thin glass coating to seal the surface of bisque.- glaze
