September 4 - Issue 4th year books. From p. 19, discuss the theories concerning the arrival of the first people into the Americas. From p. 8, explain what 3 worlds are meeting ( Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans ) Glance through sections 2-4. Read section 5 for homework.  
September 5 - Continue from yesterday
September 6 - Give 78 question pre-test ( Flanagan and Mott )
September 7 - Finish pre-test if needed. Give handout of 10 questions from section 5.
September 10 - Go over handout from Chapter 1 of section 5. Begin Chapter 2. Highlighted material will include Spanish conquistadors, the encomienda system,as well as French exploration.  
September 11 - 14 Continue material in section 1 of Chapter 2  
September 17 - Review Cortes. Discuss Pizarro, along with deVaca, de Coronado, and de Soto. Introduce the encomienda system as well as how Spanish society was arranged.  
September 18 - Review encomienda system( use de Las Casas on p. 55 to show how cruel ). Also mention segments of Spanish society. Give handout of Chapter 2 section 1. These 10 questions help supplement both Spanish and French involvement in the New World. Homework- Discuss the relationship between the French and the Native Americans.  
September 19 - Go over relationship between the French and Native Americans. Highlight last sentence on p. 57. Begin section 2 by listing 4 major reasons why England did not try to colonize in America during most of the 1500's.  
September 20 - Review or introduce highlighted material from pages 59-63, focusing on why Jamestown struggled early. Use guided reading activity worksheet on section 2 to supplement. This will be a homework assignment.
September 21 - Check section 2 handout of 15 questions. ( worth 10 points )
September 24 - Give brief lecture on hightlighted material in section 3. Assign the 6 Reading Check questions on pages 66-71 for homework. Use guided reading of 17 questions ( optional, and not used this year.)
September 21 - Check and go over 6 reading check questions given as homework ( worth 10 points ). September 22 -Use teacher made handout of 11 questions to work on in class. Chart on back to be done for in class tomorrow.
September 25 - Finish going over 11 questions from section 4. Discuss on back and record who founded each colony.
September 26 - Review sheet for Chapter 2 to be discussed and completed. TEST TOMORROW ! ( 88 points )
September 27 - Test on Chapter 2. Give handout of questions to prepare for Flanagan VUS.2
September 28 - Go over six of the twelve questions for tomorrow's quiz worth 24 points. Begin looking at Chapter 3 on Colonial Ways of Life  ** VUS.3 Give map to fill in 13 colonies
October 1 - Give 12 question quiz on VUS.2 Announce upcoming quiz on spelling and putting 13 colonies in proper location (Southern, Middle, and New England )  
October 2 -  Discuss and take notes on the Southern economy, indentured servants, and Southern society.( p. 84-87 ) Begin writing a paragraph on Bacon's Rebellion.
October 3 - Take up paragraph on Bacon's Rebellion. Compare to the paragraph I give out to check for pertinent details. Finish section 1 by lecturing and discussing Slavery in the Colonies.
October 4 - Quiz on the 13 colonies. - Section 2 on the New England and Middle Colonies comes with a 27 question handout of questions. Through reading and discussion, allow 2 1/2 days to complete.
October 5 - Continue section 2 handout of questions
October 8 - Continue handout of questions on section 2.  Use United Streaming clip on triangular trade. Go over the Navigation Acts, the Dominion of New England, the Glorious Revolution, and John Locke.
October 9  - Computer Lab Day - Cover lessons on Colonizing America, The New England Colonies, The Middle Colonies, and The Southern Colonies.
October 10 - Give section 4 - Guided Reading handout. Homework grade  
October 11 - Go over selected portions of section 4 handout37 question review to be handed out. Group work plus teacher directed answers will complete this class period.
October 12 - Begin review work for test Tuesday.  
October 15 - Finish 37 review handout for tomorrow's test
October 16 - Test on Chapter 3. Go over if time permits. Give 12 question handout on VUS.3. Attempt to answer 4 questions. Quiz on this Thursday.  
October 17 - Go over 4 additional questions from VUS.3. Quiz tomorrow. Begin Chapter 4 on the American Revolution. Look at picture of Washington crossing the Delaware. Show 13 state quarters. Lecture on beginnings of French and Indian War using highlighted material.
October 18 - Give VUS .3 quiz of 12 questions. ( '03 version ) Review material on French and Indian War including Treaty of Paris. Show 15 minute film on the war ( 16 mm ). Using opaque projector, show what North America looked like before and after the war. Continue reading and discussion of section 1.  
October 19 - Show the DVD - When the Forest Ran Red. They write 5 pieces of information concerning this British disaster under Edward Braddock.
October 22 - Finish DVD. Take up assignment for a 10 point grade
October 23 - From p. 119, list and discuss the 6 policies Britain adopted to help raise money in the colonies. Note the reactions of the colonies including an effective boycott.
October 24- In class describe: the Townshend Acts, writs of assistance, Daughters of Liberty, and the Boston Massacre. Write a paragraph on the Boston Massacre.
October 25 - Go over paragraph from the Boston Massacre. Show United Streaming - video on Countdown to Independence: Causes of the American Revolution ( 20 min. VUS.4 )Briefly check out Comparing accounts on pgs.124-125. Give handout of Chapter 4 - section 2. Do the first Roman numeral and go over in class.
October 26 - 4 hour early dismissal.
October 27 - Parent-teacher conference. Student holiday.
October 29 - Computer lab day. Work on the following lessons- Life in the Colonies, and Toward Independence( parts 1,2,& 3 )
October 30 - Go over Boston Tea Party on p.127. Look at picture and discuss. Continue working on handout. Show selected portions of United Streaming video including the First Continental Congress down through the Declaration of Independence.  Lecture from highlighted material on p.130. Put questions on board to supplement. Finish Roman numeral 3 on handout 4-2 to emphasize Olive Branch Petition and Common Sense. Show portion of 16mm film- " What say you..."Close out with Declaration of Independence material on p. 133.   Do puzzle on the American Revolution as a supplement.
October 31 - From p. 133, look at the committee that submitted the Declaration of Independence. Use video tape of actors reading the document. Use this site for FAQ's : www.IndependenceRoadTrip.org - Created Equal magazine available with handout for homework: " Be a Truth Detective " ( Located in Declaration of Independence box of goods ) Begin section 3 material emphasizing advantages and disadvantages of both sides.
November 1 - Give handout of 19 questions from section 3 of Chapter 4. Continue discussing selected questions from handout which includes Washington crossing the Delaware, the winter at Valley Forge, Saratoga, and the Southern Campaign. Understand what the Treaty of Paris said on p.145.  
November 5 - Attempt to finish handout of 19 questions by discussing in class.
November 6 - Review question 18 on Yorktown from section 3. Finish Treaty of Paris question ( #19 )
Go over Guided Reading Activity 4-4 of 15 questions. Give MUST KNOW INFO for VUS.4 ( Quiz next Tuesday )  Begin Chapter 4 review handout for test. Assign remainder of questions for homework.
November 7 - Take homework grade of assigned review questions. Finish going over remaining questions for test.
November 8 - TEST on Chapter 4 Go over upon completion
November 9 - Parent Teacher Conferences. STUDENT HOLIDAY
November 12 - Give out 20 question quiz review on VUS.4 for Wednesday.  Begin Chapter 5 on Creating a Constitution. Discuss and take notes on the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation by looking at chart on p.162. Finish reading rest of section 1 for homework.
November 13 - Discuss the Land Ordinance of 1785 plus the Northwest ordinance.List the 2 major achievements of the Confederation Congress. List and realize that the problems far outweigh the achievements. Homework - Finish problems diplomatically and economically under the Articles of Confederation.
November 14 -Give 20 question quiz on VUS.4 Go over. Describe the importance of Shay's Rebellion. Do Guided Reading Activity for section 1 to supplement. Read the first page of section 2 for homework.  
November 15 - Write down and discuss 10 items of information concerning the Constitutional Convention.
November 16 - Review the 10 items concerning the Constitutional Convention. Chart and discuss the Virginia and New Jersey Plans. Go over the Great Compromise.
November 19 - Lecture on pages 167-169. Take notes on 3/5's Compromise, blue terms, and checks and balances.
November 20 - Go over terms to reinforce. November 21 - Continue A More Perfect Union  
November 22 - Thanksgiving Break
November 23 - Thanksgiving Break
November 26 - Introduce the video- A More Perfect Union. Over the next several days, this video will give a dramatic rendition of the Constitutional Convention.
November 27 - Continue video pausing along the way to emphasize pertinent information. Pass around Life magazine on the Constitution plus WDBJ paper to look at
November 28 - Computer lab day in Library. Work on :   A New Government - parts 1,2, and 3.
November 29 - Do handout side on Preamble Scramble Discuss video to this point. Continue video.Look at each article of the Constitution just to see what it pertains to. Use Ch 5 sec 2 handout to highlight blue terms from pages 168 and 169
November 30 - Begin section 3 material concerning ratification. Carefully define Federalists and Antifederalists.
December 3 -  Finish discussing section 3. Look at selected questions from the Guided Reading Activity  5-3  
December 4 - Today is partial test review day for Chapter 5. Lab day in library. Look at A New Government parts 1, 2, and 3. Homework* Answer the first 15 questions on the review handout.
December 5 - Take homework grade on first 15 questions. Go over rest of handout for test tomorrow.
December 6 - TEST on Chapter 5
December 7 - Go over VUS.5 Must Know Questions sheet of 13 questions. Quiz of 18 questions will be in 2 days. Begin looking at Chapter 6 to introduce.  
December 10 -  Look at Washington's cabinet. Discuss the Tariff of 1789 and begin looking at the emergence of political parties.
December 11 - Take 18 question quiz on VUS.5. Go over upon completion. Use ALS to show differences between the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans.
December 12 - Continue ALS lesson on the emergence of political parties, and where support would have been found.  
December 13 - Discussion of section 2 which includes: Jay's Treaty, Pinckney's Treaty, plus the Alien and Sedition Acts.
December 17 - Review first two sections by writing 5 important pieces of information. Emphasize strict versus loose interpretation of the Constitution. Discuss choices.  
December 18 - Discuss election of 1800 comparing it to the election in 2000.

January 7 - Go over concept of judicial review, and have students write down 2 items concerning the Louisiana Purchase. Discuss and present handout
January 8 -  Present handout of section 3  and go over information including White House info on reverse side.
January 9 -  - Discuss section 4 material highlighting  the War of 1812. Present handout of Chapter 5 review.  
January 10  - Go over review questions in preparation for tomorrow's test on Chapter 6.
January 11  - TEST on Chapter 6
January 14 - LAB DAY Do the following lessons: Moving Westward, Transportation West, and * The Age of Jackson
January 15 - Begin Chapter 7 by looking at the Era of Good Feelings and the Monroe Doctrine. Section 1 handout of 14 questions to be used as a supplement after lecturing on highlighted material
January 17 - NO SCHOOL SNOW

January 21 - Give previous book information about the Erie Canal. Go over section 2 with handout.  
January 22 - Go to section 3 of Chapter 7 and look at cotton. Know how the invention of the cotton gin affected slavery. Look at Society in the South and Slavery on pages 253-254 and discuss including the task and the gang system.  
January 23 - Present handout 7-3 of 14 questions to work on
January 24 - Lecture briefly on section 4. Give Guided Reading handouts on section 4 concerning the Missouri Compromise plus the presidential elections of 1824 and 1828. Go over in class. Finish remainder for homework.4 hour early dismissal. End of 1st semester
January 25 - View Adams and Jackson on DVD " The Presidents". Complete Guided Reading from section 4 and talk about the Election of 1828.
January 28 - Give handout of review questions from  Chapter 7.
January 29 - TEST on Chapter 7. Grade and go over. Assign questions 1-4 on Chapter 8 study guide as homework
January 30 - Take 10 point homework grade on questions 1-4. Go over and discuss beginnings of questions.
January 31 - Continue discussion of questions 1-12 on Chapter 8 study guide.
February 1 - NO SCHOOL - ICE
February 4 - Show United Streaming on Jackson including the Trail of Tears and the Nullification Crisis. Check for a homework grade the remainder of Chapter 8 handout including the Nat Turner rebellion on page 288.  
February 5 -  Finish questions 19-22. Computer lab day. Work on the lessons on Texas Independence and the Mexican War as well as reformers
February 6 -  Lecture on first section of Chapter 9. *This is VUS. 6a This includes the concept of Manifest Destiny. Present handout of 10 questions to reinforce section.
February 7  - Go over 10 question handout on section 1. Begin looking at section 2 material which will also have a handout of questions to supplement.  
February 8 -  Lecture material from section 2 concerning the  fight for Texas independence.  Give handout of questions 11 - 24 to finish in class and for homework if needed.
February 8 - Check questions 11-19. Begin Discovery Channel's 53 minute program on the Alamo.
February 11 - Conclude Discovery Channel's Battle of the Alamo from the library. This 53 minute program will be concluded tomorrow.
February 12 -  Finish questions 20-24. Begin looking at section 3 on the Mexican War. After asking what the biggest threat of death was in migrating westward, use the fiction box on p. 307 to clarify. Work on questions 25 - 34 to complete this chapter
February 13 - Finsh going over section 3 questions. Make sure # 34 is well known. Use United Streaming to show clips on Goliad, San Jacinto, and the Mexican War.
February 14 - Begin Chapter 8 & 9 review for test
February 15 - Test on Chapters 8 & 9.
February 18 - Begin Chapter 10 with section 1. Take notes on why the aquisition of Mexican lands presented a problem. Note what the Wilmot Proviso was, plus the concept of popular sovereignty.
February 19 - Go to lab to work on state location. Go to: www.sheppardsoftware.com/states  - go to web games, then to place the state ( intermediate ) This is a great website!! Also ** go to: www.nationalgeographic.com   Then type in geospy in search box  
February 20 - Finish section 1 of Chapter 10 by giving map on Compromise of 1850. They write selected terms of this Compromise from p. 324.
February 21 - Go over map of Compromise of 1850. Give handout on Events Leading to the Civil War.
February 22 - Work on and discuss the handout on events leading to the Civil War in conjunction with section 2.
February 25 - Finish handout of events. Give 10 question quiz on section 2. Give section 3 handout to work on in class.
February 25 - Go over section 3 answers to handout. Begin lecture of highlighted material on section 4.
Show Blue Ridge United Streaming segments on Kansas-Nebraska Act, Lincoln Douglas debates, and Dred Scott decision, contained in AMERICA'S ERA OF EXPANSION AND REFORM 1817-1860.
February 26 - Give review sheet of questions for tomorrow's test on Chapter 10.
February 27 - NO SCHOOL - IMPENDING SNOW
February 28 - Test on Chapter 10. Go over upon completion.  
Give handout on on VUS .6 to look over for quiz next week. Answer selected questions over the next several days.
February 29 - If Computer Lab Day is available in library, work on the issue of slavery and The Union is Broken ( 1 & 2 )
March 3 - March 5 - 10th grade writing SOL's will slow this week down Begin Chapter 11 on the Civil War. Take notes on it being the first modern war. Mention different names each side took on. Lecture on section 1 of Chapter 11. Give handout of sections 1-3. Homework is answering the first 11 questions.
March 6 - Take homework grade. Stress the 1st question on advantages. Go over the remaining questions.
March 7 - Work on questions 12-23 from section 2 of chapter 11. Use lecture to help them answer these questions
March 10 - Continue working and discussing questions on section 3 of Chapter 11 handout.
March 11 - QUIZ on VUS.6 62 points
March 12 - Finish handout on the 1st three sections of Chapter 11.
March 13 - Beging watching Glory - An excellent account of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment.
March 14 - Continue Glory mixing in information at selected intervals.  
March 17 - Finish the movie today and discuss.
March 18 - Begin looking at section 4 of chapter 11. Handout available to reinforce lecture material.    Lecture on section 4 material including the Battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg. Read the Gettysburg Address noting Lincoln's ironic line: " The world will little note..."  
March 19 - Go over section 4 handout helping out with the answers. Look at section 5 which includes Sherman's March to the Sea, and the aftermath of the war.
March 20 - Give handout of review questions for test tomorrow. Go over and supplement
March 21 - TEST on Chapter 11  - The Civil War
March 22 - A & E video on Foot Soldier Yankees and Rebels are a good supplement to wrap up the Civil War.
March 23 - Begin Chapter 12 on Reconstruction. Section 1 notes should include Lincoln's plan, the Radical Republicans, and the Wade-Davis Bill.
March 26 - Lab Day in library. Work on the 2 Reconstruction lessons.
March 27 - Section 2 of Chapter 12 highlights Johnson being a racist and his impeachment.
March 28 - Lecture on carpetbaggers and scalawags, how reforms in the South had a downside,and the KKK, along with what the Enforcement Acts were.
March 29 - Section 4 notes from lecture include why Reconstruction ended with emphasis on the Compromise of 1877. Give Reconstruction highlight handout to help supplement.
March 30 - Use picture of hamburger to show the conditions for African Americans before, during, and after Reconstruction.
April 2 -  Work on review and study for test.
April 3 - TEST on Chapter 12. Give VUS.7 handout for upcoming quiz.
April 4 - Answer any questions on their handout. QUIZ THURSDAY. Begin Chapter 13 on mining and ranching. Lecture on highlighted material plus give handout on section 1 concerning cowboy information.  
April 5 -  2 hour early release
SPRING BREAK!
April 10 - Section 2 of Chapter 13 mentions the Homestead Act of 1862. Use highlighted material from section 2 and 3 which speaks of Native American clashes with whites.
April 11 - QUIZ on VUS.7 handout. Give OPEN BOOK QUIZ of 10 questions on Chapter 13.  
April 12 - Chapter 14 on Industrialization includes new inventions. Lecture using highlighted material from section 1  
April 13 - Section 2 on railroads will be supplemented by looking at the video: The Iron Road.
April 16 - GIVE OUT PROJECT SHEET INFO Finish the video: The Iron Road
April 17 - Computer lab day. Work on the following lessons: Life on the Plains (1,2) The Changing Nation (1-3)
April 18 -  Finish the video and work on handout of 18 notable names.
April 19 - Section 4 on unions highlights why indusry opposed unions as well as three great strikes plus the Railroad Strike of 1877. Look at the question below the handout of 18 names to discuss the other 4 questions on tomorrow's test.
April 23 - TEST on Chapter 14 - Briefly look at and introduce Old as opposed to New Immigrants.
April 24 - Begin Chapter 15 on Immigration. Include why Chinese came to the U. S. and the Exclusion Act of 1882. Mention nativism and why there was so much resentment.  
April 25 - Lecture briefly on last 2 sections of Chapter 15. Give handout of review questions 1-25. First 10 are due tomorrow
April 26 -  Go over and discuss the rest of the review. Test tomorrow.
April 27 - TEST on Chapter 15 ( Immigration ) Give VUS.8 handout of review information. 34 question test will be in 2 days.
April 30 - Lab Day. Go over the Progressive Era and U. S. Imperialism - parts 1 and 2.
May 1 - Begin looking at Imperialism in Chapter 17. This includes our expansion into Japan and Hawaii. Also, go over the Spanish-American War in section 2.
May 2 - Give 34 question Flanagan test on VUS.8. Give back upon grading.
May 3 - Section 3 highlights the Open Door policy and the Panama Canal. Mention what the Progressive Movement was from page 544. Page 549 has reforms: direct primary, initiative, referendum, and recall. Look at these. Briefly look at The Story of Yosemite on p. 561 and mention new California quarter with John Muir.  
May 5 - Lecture from highlighted material on Chapter 19 which deals with W.W.I. Begin working on as homework a fill in the blank handout to wrap up this chapter.
May 6 - Wrap up handout. Look at " Warring and Roaring", ( Roaring only ) to cover the Jazz Age which is Chapter 20.  
May 9 - Begin Chapter 22 on the Great Depression. Use selected material over the next three days to cover Roosevelt's New Deal programs
May 10 - Continue Chapters 22 and 23
May 11 - Finish Chapter 23
May 12 - Go over last questions. Give Final Exam Review statements. Then give End of Course review questions  1 - 76. Discuss  
May 13 - Go over part 2 of review questions 1 - 80.  
May 14 - Give open book test on Chapters 22 and 23. 9 SOL time constraints will not allow test to be taken )
May 15 - Give 43 question multiple choice handout on W. W. II and Beyond. Go over war questions. Finish the remaining questions as homework.  
May 16 - Continue test on W.W. II and Beyond
May 17 - Go over last questions. Give Final Exam Review statements. Then give End of Course review questions  1 - 76. Discuss  
May 17 - Go over part 2 of review questions 1 - 80.  
May 18 - Civil Rights handout followed by the movie - Mississippi Burning.
May 24  - Cold War handout followed by the movie 13 Days
