September 1 - Finish pre-test if needed.
September 7 - Give handout of 10 questions from section 5.
Go over handout from Chapter 1 of section 5. Begin Chapter 2. Highlighted material will include Spanish conquistadors, the encomienda system,as well as French exploration.
September 8 - 10 Continue material in section 1 of Chapter 2

December 16 - Go to section 2 of Chapter 7 and look at cotton. Know how the invention of the cotton gin affected slavery. Look at Society in the South and Slavery and discuss.

January 12 - Lecture on remaining reforms of Chapter 8 including famous abolitionists.

January 19 - Begin Chapter 9 on Manifest Destiny. Show a portion of America: The Story of Us. The first scene depits Daniel Boone and the Cumberland Trail. Lewis and Clark and Mountain Men such as Jeddidiah Smith are shown.
January 20 - Continue looking at section 1 and the famous trails shown on the map. Take notes on Manifest Destiny and American settlement into New Mexico, California, and Texas. Continue showing DVD.
January 23 - Finish notes on section 2 which highlights the Mexican American War
January 24 - Work on section 3 handout of questions on lands gained from the Mexican War, the Wilmot Proviso, and California's statehood.
January 25 - Student Holiday - Semester change
January 26 - Begin open book test on Chapter 9.
January 27 - Finish open book test. Show a portion of the DVD on America The History of US. This portion recaps the buikding of the Erie Canal plus the growing tensions beteen the North and the South.
January 30 - Begin looking at section 1 of Chapter 10 highlighting The Compromise of 1850. Go to computer lab and do The Union is Broken 1 & 2.
January 31 - Lecture briefly on sections 2 & 3. Then give handout on Events Leading to the Civil War. Do 5 of the 11 for homework.
February 1 - Take grade on homework assignment. Then go over th rest of The Events Leading to the Civil War
February 2 - Lecture on 4th section of Chapter 10. The election of 1860 and John Brown's raid

March 2 - Finsh going over section 3 questions. Make sure # 34 is well known. Use United Streaming to show clips on Goliad, San Jacinto, and the Mexican War
March 3 - Begin 3 day review on Chapter 8 & 9 review for test

March 10 - - Work on and discuss the handout on events leading to the Civil War in conjunction with section 2. Begin Chapter 10 with section 1. Take notes on why the aquisition of Mexican lands presented a problem. Note what the Wilmot Proviso was, plus the concept of popular sovereignty.
March 11 - If available - Go to lab to work on state location. Go to: www.sheppardsoftware.com/states - go to web games, then to place the state ( intermediate ) This is a great website!! Also ** go to: www.nationalgeographic.com Then type in geospy in search box ( Lab not available this year )
March 12 - Finish section 1 of Chapter 10 by giving map on Compromise of 1850. They write selected terms of this Compromise from p. 324. Go over section 3 answers to handout. Begin lecture of highlighted material on section 4.
Show Blue Ridge United Streaming segments on Kansas-Nebraska Act, Lincoln Douglas debates, and Dred Scott decision, contained in AMERICA'S ERA OF EXPANSION AND REFORM 1817-1860. ( If time permits )
March 15 - Clean up remainder of section 4 of Chapter 10.
March 16 - Review for Ch. 10 test tomorrow.
March 17 - TEST on Chapter 10.
March 18 - Give handout on on VUS .6 to look over for quiz next week. Answer selected questions over the next several days.

March 22 - Begin Chapter 11 on the Civil War. Take notes on it being the first modern war. Mention different names each side took on. Lecture on section 1 of Chapter 11. Give handout of sections 1-3. Homework is answering the first 11 questions.
March 23 - Take homework grade. Stress the 1st question on advantages. Go over the remaining questions.
March 24 - Work on questions 12-23 from section 2 of chapter 11. Use lecture to help them answer these questions
March 25 - Continue working and discussing questions on section 3 of Chapter 11 handout.
March 19 - QUIZ on VUS.6 62 points
March 20 - Finish handout on the 1st three sections of Chapter 11.
*May have to skip this movie if behind Begin watching Glory - An excellent account of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment.
- Continue Glory mixing in information at selected intervals.

March 18 - Begin looking at section 4 of chapter 11. Handout available to reinforce lecture material. Lecture on section 4 material including the Battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg. Read the Gettysburg Address noting Lincoln's ironic line: " The world will little note..."
March 19 - Go over section 4 handout helping out with the answers. Look at section 5 which includes Sherman's March to the Sea, and the aftermath of the war.
March 24 - Give handout of review questions for test in two days. Go over and supplement
March 26 - TEST on Chapter 11 - The Civil War
March 27 - A & E video on Foot Soldier Yankees and Rebels are a good supplement to wrap up the Civil War.
March 30 - Begin Chapter 12 on Reconstruction. Section 1 notes should include Lincoln's plan, the Radical Republicans, and the Wade-Davis Bill.
March 31 - Section 2 of Chapter 12 highlights Johnson being a racist and his impeachment. Lecture on carpetbaggers and scalawags, how reforms in the South had a downside,and the KKK, along with what the Enforcement Acts were.
April 1 - Section 4 notes from lecture include why Reconstruction ended with emphasis on the Compromise of 1877. Give Reconstruction highlight handout to help supplement.
April 2 - Use picture of hamburger to show the conditions for African Americans before, during, and after Reconstruction.
April 3 - Work on review and study for test.
April 6 - TEST on Chapter 12. Give VUS.7 handout for upcoming quiz.
April 7 - Answer any questions on their handout. QUIZ THURSDAY. Begin Chapter 13 on mining and ranching. Lecture on highlighted material plus give handout on section 1 concerning cowboy information.

April 19 - Section 4 on unions highlights why indusry opposed unions as well as three great strikes plus the Railroad Strike of 1877. Look at the question below the handout of 18 names to discuss the other 4 questions on tomorrow's test.
April 23 - TEST on Chapter 14 - Briefly look at and introduce Old as opposed to New Immigrants.
April 24 - Begin Chapter 15 on Immigration. Include why Chinese came to the U. S. and the Exclusion Act of 1882. Mention nativism and why there was so much resentment.
April 25 - Lecture briefly on last 2 sections of Chapter 15. Give handout of review questions 1-25. First 10 are due tomorrow
April 26 - Go over and discuss the rest of the review. Test tomorrow.
April 27 - TEST on Chapter 15 ( Immigration ) Give VUS.8 handout of review information. 34 question test will be in 2 days.
April 30 - Lab Day. Go over the Progressive Era and U. S. Imperialism - parts 1 and 2.
May 1 - Begin looking at Imperialism in Chapter 17. This includes our expansion into Japan and Hawaii. Also, go over the Spanish-American War in section 2.
May 2 - Give 34 question test on VUS.8. Give back upon grading.
May 3 - Section 3 highlights the Open Door policy and the Panama Canal. Mention what the Progressive Movement was from page 544. Page 549 has reforms: direct primary, initiative, referendum, and recall. Look at these. Briefly look at The Story of Yosemite on p. 561 and mention new California quarter with John Muir.
