Miss Miller's First Grade
Friday, October 15th, is an Instructional Support and Enhancement Day (formerly called Faculty Senate Day). This means no school for students. Enjoy the Festival!
My planning time is 2:15-2:45 everyday. If you ever need to contact me, that is a great time to do so. Also, I am usually at school until 4:00 p.m.
We have Phonics homework every night, Monday through Thursday. We have Reading homework every Monday (read the story).
On this page I hope to inform you what we are studying. Occasionally, I will refer to CSO's (which stands for Content Standards and Objectives) that first graders in West Virginia are required to learn.

For each test, the words will count 9 points each (90 points) and the sentences will count 5 points each (10 points) for a total of 100 points. The sentences will be graded as follows:
- Capital letter at beginning - 1 point each sentence
- Punctuation at end - 1 point each sentence
- Correct spelling of words (each misspelled word = minus 1 point for a 3 point maximum deduction)
English:
- This year we will be focusing on writing complete sentences. So far we have learned and are practicing five key points:
- Key-in on the beginning: Every sentence must have a capital letter.
- Key-in on the end: Every sentence must have end punctuation (usually a period).
- Key-in on the middle: Every sentence must make sense.
- Every sentence must have a subject. Who or what is the sentence about?
- Every sentence must have a verb. For now we are learning that a verb is an action word -- something you can do.
Math:
- Leaning the meaning of addition and subtraction is our main focus for the next two weeks. We will work on basic facts to 10.
- It is time to begin memorizing our basic facts. Be looking for strategy sheets to be coming home soon.
- Next week (October 18-22) we will do a special math unit called "Frog Math." It will deal with many math topics including sorting, grouping, and basic addition facts to 12.
Weekly Science/Social Studies Unit:
- October 11th: Christopher Columbus
- October 18th: Magnetism
- October 25th: Bats and Owls
