Dear Parents: BOOK REPORT EVERY OTHER WEEK!
In order to help insure that your fourth grade child reads some books of quality this academic year, the fourth grade teachers have collaborated on developing a reading list from our Accelerated Reading Program administered through our school library. Your child may count a report given on any of these books as one of the required library books assigned by their teacher. In Mr. Prater’s class, these ten books will count toward the book report due every other week that is required. Since there are approximately thirty-six weeks of school, you child will only need an additional 8 library books and reports to fulfill their required outside reading. Books must be from the Accelerated Reader Program and must be at least a third grade level book. I may permit exceptions on an individual student basis.
Students will develop a broader vocabulary and improve their comprehension skills tremendously throughout the school year. Writing a book report every other week will also teach them to organize their thoughts and the events in a story in chronological order. Their writing skills will improve with each completed book report. The first few books and written reports will be more challenging since students are learning new skills. By the second nine weeks most students are able to complete the written assignment off the top of their heads while in class. The rough draft should always be edited with a parent’s assistance and the complete report recopied neatly and correctly before handing in on Friday mornings.
The Accelerated Reading List is as follows:
Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls (This one should be read over the spring break.)
Matchlock Gun by Walter Edmonds
Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry (This one may require additional time also.)
Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary
Help, I’m a Prisoner In the Library by Eth Clifford
My Side of the Mountain Jean Craighead George
Little House In The Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder
The Night Flyers by Elizabeth McDavid Jones
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Superfudge by Judy Blume
I suggest that your child read these books first and get the required list finished.
Sincerely,
Larry Prater
** Your book report is due each Friday morning and the grade will count as both a reading and language grade. You should have your rough draft completed by Thursday night and your parents should help you edit it and then the whole report should be copied over neatly and correctly. Be sure to get the required list completed as soon as possible. Each report should be at least a page long and no longer than one and one half pages total. You will be asked to do it over if it is longer than that.
