Wednesday, June 4th

A few notes....

Thursday...I have a very structured day planned again for tomorrow. In addition, your student will be assigned to rewrite the conclusion for his/her on-going "essay rewriting."  I will instruct the students to write an improved conclusion and then type, double-spaced (or neatly hand write, double spaced) a final essay.  This "new" essay will be included in your child's writing folder along with the original mock writing exam essay.  The writing folders will remain with me until your child has been assigned a 7th grade Language Arts teacher.  At that time, the 7th grade Language Arts teacher will receive the folders for instructional purposes next year.  The final product will be due on Monday, June 9th.

Also, please note that the 6th grade EOG celebration is scheduled for Thursday morning.  I will try not to let it affect my structured schedule!!!! (who am I kidding?)

Friday...This is a structured "team" day.  The Cardinals team has a few fun activities planned for the morning such as the awarding of student-voted Superlative Awards.  We will be outside in the parking loop area playing a variety of games from 9:15am until 11:15am.  At that time, we will come back inside to cool off and wait for lunch.  Pizza will be delivered to the entire 6th grade student body as a celebration of the success of the Hornets' Reading Fest.  Please send your child to school with a drink for lunchtime.  Also, we have invited the students to bring a snack of cookies, etc. to share after pizza.  Please do not feel obligated to send something, but I'm sure the students would love it.  They are a growing bunch of kids!  After lunch, we will have another structured team activity although the details are incomplete at this time.

Monday...Another structured day with Mrs. Petersen.  I have an activity for my students to work on that relates well with Maniac Magee.  It's a hands-on, creative project; and, I'd like all of my students to participate as these projects will be displayed for the incoming 6th graders during the Meet & Greet session just before school begins.

Tuesday...The last HURRAH!  The 6th and 7th grade awards ceremony begins at 7:45am.  You are all welcome to attend regardless of whether or not your child is receiving an award.  We hope to see all of you there!  Students may/may not choose to be dismissed following the ceremony.  It is a personal choice either way.  For those students who opt to stay at school there will be an activity for them.

Tuesday, May 27th.

There is no assigned homework.

PARENTS:
1. Please ask your child to share his/her Math EOG scores with you.  There may/may not be additional information for you to read over, sign, and return.  Unfortunately, the reading EOG scores will not be made available until sometime in November as the test is being re-normed this year.

2.  We have 10 more days of learning left!  I have been stressing to each of my classes that we WILL be reading and learning for the remainder of the school year.  Unfortunately, after the EOGs, some students think we are "done."  However, we are not, and I do not have any "free" time planned.  Please encourage your child to continue to work to his/her best ability and to stay on task.

3.  I still have several students who have yet to turn in the final scrapbook pages along with the cover page and table of contents.  This was due on May 7th.  Time is running out!  I need to have all scrapbooks graded and bound before this Friday.

Thursday, May 22nd...

There is no assigned homework.

PARENTS:  Today, your child should be bringing home a notice from the HRMS PTA.  They are looking for sixth and seventh grade parents to help with the 8th Grade Dance!  Just in case, the notice reads.....

"June 6th is the 8th Grade dance and it is a tradition at HRMS for the underclassmen's parents to chaperone the 8th grade dance.  So, please volunteer to help out from 6:30 to 9:00pm that evening so the 8th graders can enjoy their last dance without their parents watching!!  Please call or email me to volunteer.  Libby Wilhelmson at 363-7157 or ronw101@aol.com."

When my children were in middle school back in MA we had the same tradition.  It works out beautifully, and I remember really appreciating not feeling like I had to volunteer when it was my child's turn for a dance, to receive an award, or just to attend a celebration.

Wednesday, May 21st...

A big sigh of relief!...EOGs have ended!

PARENTS:  We will end our school year with one of my favorite activities, reading a novel! We will begin reading Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.  It is the story of a young boy who becomes orphaned, and rather than live with his unhappy aunt and uncle, the boy runs away.  "Maniac Magee" becomes a mythical being of sorts as he finds a way to bring unlikely groups of people together. The theme of the novel includes overcoming adversity, racial tolerance and harmony, perseverance, and the list goes on. Through discussion, the students will be able to make connections with Tuck Everlasting, Freak the Mighty, and perhaps their very own lives!

Tuesday, May 20th...

EOGS continue...

PARENTS: We had a great testing day in Room 2423 today! Everyone was awake!  Please continue to be sure your child gets plenty of rest each night and eats a nutritious breakfast each morning during the EOGs. They are essential for an excellent performance while in school.  Students should dress in layers as the temperature in our classrooms is inconsistent.  And, please encourage your child to do his/her best work in terms of academics and behavior.

STUDENTS:
Remember to bring a book to your Block 2 teacher to hold for you so that you have something to keep yourself busy with after all the tests have been collected.  You will not be allowed to make any noise until the entire school has finished testing.  Be prepared to have to be either absolutely silent or extremely quiet for long periods of time.  The 8th grade students just below us will be taking the Reading test!

To My Block 2 Students:
Kudos to all of you!  I know it is asking a lot of you to sit for long periods of time while being extra quiet.  We have only one more day to go.  Unfortunately, tomorrow will be extra challenging as you will finish early and then have to be silent for an even longer period of time while the 8th graders below us continue to test.  I have every confidence that you CAN DO IT!

Attention Parents:  As the year comes to a close we will be getting busier and busier.  Please help your child keep pace as we prepare for EOGs, finish up the scrapbook project, complete a poetry assignment, and revise and edit the practice mock writing exams.  These revision are extremely important as they will be placed in your child's writing folder and be sent off to his/her 7th grade Language Arts teacher.  As you know, 7th grade is "the" grade in terms of writing and taking/passing the state writing exam.  It is my hope that all of my students have solid entries into their writing folders so that their new teachers will be better able to assess their individual strengths and weaknesses and then teach them to improve their skills.
We need your help!

To Parents:  I have posted a link to a very useful web-site for your child to use as a study tool or for help in completing grammar workbook homework.  It is the Prentice Hall website.  The link brings you directly to the grammar workbook pages.  These pages can be completed at home when:
a)your child has forgotten his/her grammar workbook at school on a night when he/she needs it to complete a homework assignment,
b)your child would rather complete the page on-line, print it out, and copy the answers into the workbook,
c)your child needs to study for an upcoming test. This is a wonderful tool for self-testing as there is the option to submit your answers for a score.  The score indicates which answers are incorrect, if any.

To Students:  Please use the web-site to help you better understand the concept we learn in class.  If you have a solid understanding of the Parts of Speech it makes all grammar work easier to understand, and it makes you a better writer!

UPDATE ON HORNETS' READING FEST---The Cardinals team, as of this morning, has read 19 books.  Please encourage your child to continue to read.  And, please remember to sign the log sheet once your child has finished a book. 31 more books and we get to place our first hornet on the nest, and have a treat!

The next scrapbook due date is Wed, Jan 9th.  Two more pages are due.  One of these two pages must be for Tuck Everlasting.

You should have a total of 8 pages (4 pages for some students) completed on Jan 9th.  The scores for each of the eight pages will be totaled and averaged and will be counted as a test grade for second quarter.  If you have fallen behind you must make a plan to get yourself caught up.

There is no assigned homework for tonight.

Wednesday, December 19th

Homework:
Study for tomorrow's test on Tuck Everlasting.

Tuesday, December 18th

There will be a test on Tuck Everlasting this Thursday.  Please use the chapter comprehension questions as a study guide.  The best way to study is to simply review the notes each night.  If you wait until the last minute to study you will simply be trying to cram too much information at once.  A little at a time is a better approach!

Monday, December 17th

1.  Please bring in an old magazine for tomorrow's activity.
2.  If you were unable to finish all comprehension questions in class today, please review the unanswered questions.  Answer as many as you can on your own and be prepared to ask questions in class tomorrow.

Friday, December 14th

There is no assigned homework for the weekend.

NOTICE:  The next scrapbook due date is January 9th.  Two more pages are due that day.  A total of 8 pages should be completed by that date.  I will grade the two pages and then take an average of the 8 pages submitted.  This average will count as a TEST grade for Second Quarter.  If you have fallen behind on the number of pages completed you must make a plan to get yourself back on track by January 9th.

Write each vocabulary word in Cornell note format.
The four-step format is as follows.
1. To the left of the margin/divider, Copy the vocabulary word and part of speech.

2. Copy the definition as it appears on the vocabulary list I provided in class to the right of the margin/divider.

3.  As best as you can, in the space beneath the written vocabulary word to the left of the margin/divider, illustrate the word.  Stick figures are just fine.

4.  Beneath the definition and to the right of the margin/divider, use the vocabulary word in a mature, well-written sentence.  The sentence should demonstrate or indicate your understanding of the meaning of the word.  For example, the sentence "He lives in an asylum" does not show the true meaning of the word.

Here is an example:

1)asylum (n)         sanctuary;refuge;institution for
                     the mentally ill; haven

illustrate in      The patient was sent to the
this space         asylum for treatment of his
                     mental illness.

Welcome to my schoolnotes page.  This is a great spot to visit every day during the school year.  Here, you will find your daily homework assignments.  However, you will also find announcements, reminders of coming events, and special messages from me to you.  I hope you and your parents will find this site useful.

Please read on for your specific assignment which will be due by 7:30am on Wednesday.

A Message to My Students,

I am so thankful to be able to share my days with such an enthusiastic, respectful, and energetic group of students! I expect we will have a great year together.  We will let our minds and our imaginations grow so that we can become better communicators.  Afterall, that is what Language Arts/English classes are all about.  Have you ever known a famous world leader to be a poor communicator?  Ask your parents.  They likely will be able to give you their opinion.

Mrs. Petersen

HERE IS TONIGHT'S HOMEWORK:

Send me an e-mail message through the link on the schoolnotes page (kpetersen@wcpss.net).  Your message should explain how you feel about being in the 6th grade at HRMS after only two days.  Some suggestions to get you started....Are you happy?  Are you sad?  What concerns do you have? Be sure to include your name so I can give you credit for doing your homework!!!

Happy E-mailing!!
