Monday, Oct 19: Journal. Introduce and discuss in small groups the poem entitled, "To Young Readers" by Gwendolyn Brooks.

Tues, Oct 20: Journal. Collect and discuss homework. Visit the media center to peruse books and other items at the Book Fair. Introduce unit on Non-fiction.
HW: Complete handout on non-fiction and study definitions for primary and secondary sources.
Wed, Oct 21: (Early early release day) Journal. Collect and discuss homework. Discuss Elements and types of non-fiction on pages 424-425 in literature books. STUDY! STUDY! STUDY! these terms for an assessment later in the week. Study information and vocabulary on page 512 in the textbook. Read "The Trouble with Television" on pages 518-523.
HW: Complete page 524, questions 1-7. Answer in complete sentences! Study non-fiction elements. QUIZ forthcoming!!!!!

Wed, Nov 18: Journal. Return quiz grades. Discuss persuasive essays and what is included in them. Model a few essays. Discuss counter-arguments and practice creating them. Discuss five persuasive essay topics and allow students to pick one and start brainstorming ideas.
