SPRING CONFERENCES

Thanks to all of you that attended your scheduled spring conference.  It was nice to share with you the progress your child has made this school year.  Continue to work on second grade skills during the summer months so that your child will be well prepared for third grade.  If you failed to sign up for a conference, please send me a note letting me know when you would like to come.  I will confirm a time by writing a note on the self-assessment sheet.  Conferences usually last about twenty minutes.  The morning times are 7:50 and 8:10 any morning except Tuesday.  The afternoon times are 4:15 and 4:40 except on Wednesday and Friday.

SUMMER READING

Encourage your child to read each day this summer.  The county libraries have a suggested reading list for each grade level.  It might be a good idea to allow your child to use his/her library card to check out and read some of these books.  Second graders should be reading 90 words per minute at the end of second grade.  Their reading voice should sound just like their talking voice.  Encourage them to read fluently and practice retellings often.

OTHER SUGGESTED SUMMER ACTIVITIES

  • Maintain a writing journal.  Students can write about topics that interest them or write summaries of books that they have read.
  • Learn the math addition and subtraction facts from memory (using the flashcards will help as well as Math Magician on www.learnnc.com.
  • Practice correct letter formation and neatness.

IT’S BEEN A WONDERFUL YEAR!!!!

I have enjoyed teaching your child.   I will miss having him/her in my class next year.  Continue to work hard in third grade supporting your child in whatever ways you can.  I’m sure that he/she will do well.

Happy Summer Break,

Karen Craig, Second Grade Teacher
