Monday, August 25th: Welcome back to school.  Each of you should have brought your textbook home.  
Your homework for tonight is to answer the following sheet of paper slao read and sign papers in the packet;  
WRITE 5 QUESTIONS THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ANSWERED AS THEY STUDY NORTH CAROLINA HISOTRY THIS YEAR.

Tuesday, August 26th:  Complete the "Tell Me About Yourself"  sheet and the Friendly Letter.  Study the important things for Ms Cummens class.  Quiz tomorrow.  The quiz will be on what are the  proceedures when you come in the classroom, how do you head the paper, how you get your make-up work and where do you put your make-up work when you are absent.

Wednesday, August 27th:  Begin to study by sections your US state map.  The test for the states will be next Friday, September 5th.

Thursday, August 28th:  Continue to study the states for the test on Friday, September 5th.  If you didn't finish your timeline, that means the events, their effects and the illistration in class finish for homework.  http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm  Is a website that could help you study for the states test.
Look at the center column about the states and choose your level.  In level one the computer will call out a state and you have to identify it on the map by clicking on it.  Level two you have to put the states one the map.  Check it out!!!

Friday, August 29th:  Very good first week of school!!!!.  If you didn't complete the definitions and using the terms in a sentence from the terms section on page 2 in your textbook, that will be your homework this weekend

Tuesday, Sept 2: Continue to prepare for the states test on Friday.  The website above is a great way to practice for the test.

Wednesday, Sept 3: Read pages 6-11 in the textbook, then create 2 column notes for those pages,Complete Geographical worksheet by labeling the map with the correct term.
Study for the states test.  You have to be able to identify each state by its shape and be able to spell each state correctly.

Thursday, Sept 4th:  States Test is tomorrow.  You will be given a map of the US with the states numbered.
You will be given a sheet number 1-50.  You will be asked to look at the state and write down the name of it on the blank that has the same number as the state.  Spelling will count.  If you include the capital it will be extra credit.

Friday, Sept 5th: Read Chapter 3 section 3 and complete the guide.  That is pages 18-25 in the text book.

Monday, September 8th:  the eight grade counselor will be in all my Social Studies Classes.  The homework for tonight is to read Chapter 1 Section 4 in the text, it is about the mountain region the pages are 28-36 and complete the notes.
WE WILL HAVE OUR TEST ON CHAPTER ONE ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH

Tuesday, September 9th:  Study you notes for Chapter 1 sections 1,2,3, The Tidewater Region, The Coastal Plan,
The Peidmont.  Do the worksheet that covers NC's geographical regions, counties, Terms and Rivers.

Wednesday, September 10th: Complete Chapter 1 Section 5 sheet, and North Carolina's Geographic Regions
I am sending a study guide for your test on Friday.  Take advantage of it and use it to study tonight and tomorrow.

Thursday, September 11th: Study your notes and sheets for the Chapter one, North Carolina's regions for the test tomorrow.

Monday, September 15th First complete the Section 2 study guide sheet.  Start on the side with the summary.
Then complete the Notetaking Study Guide.

Tuesday, September 16th:  Make sure you complete the bubble maps for the 7 regions where the Native Americans settled.  Then Define the 7 vocabulary words
dialect, clan, matrilineal, consensus, conjurer, immunity.  Create and fill in the chart where the rows have the following native american tribes, Algonquin, Tuscarora,Catawba, Cherokee.  The columns will have: Meaning of their name, Language, Villiages, tribes, and divisions, Location of group.
On your North Carolina map label the native american tribes in their appropriate region.  then for each region list four aspects of their culture for each region.

REMEMBER CULTURE IS the beliefs, behaviors, and traditions of a group.

Wednesday, September 17:  Constitution Day.  No Homework for tonight.

Thursday, September 18th:  Open House tonight from 6:00 to 8:00.  
Complete Chapter 2 Section 2 guided reading sheet.  the pages that you need to read are on the sheet.

I had some emergy medical issues that went from Friday
through Monday and was not at school for those two days.

Tuesday, September 23rd;  Type out in 12 font and doubled space the final copy of your native american story.
Each student should have the rubric for the story

Wednesday, September 24th;  You need to finish translating your story to Native American symbols.
Remember to color it and if you create more symbols create a key on your paper showing what the symbols mean.  
The next few days the students will be picking out a historic site in North Carolina.  They will be doing research and creating a brochure about that site.  This is intended to help your child get ready for the computer test.

Thursday, September 25th: no homework

Friday, September 26th: Christopher Columbus worksheet

Tuesday, September 30th  Do Spanish Conquistadors worksheet and on the other side the English explorers.

We were in the Media Center doing research on a North Carolina historical site that each student chose to research.  Wednesday and Thursday we will be in the computer lab and each student will use that information to create a brochure.

Wednesday, October 1st: French explorers worksheet both sides.

Thursday, October 2nd: No Homework.  Watch the Vice Presidential debate at 9:00pm

Monday, October 6th, No Homework
Tuesday, October 7th,   Since we changed the "Who Discovered America discussion from tomorrow to Thursday and requested by the students.  We will have Thursday quiz tomorrow.  The quiz will be on the following:  
The notes about the Reasons For Exploration.  These notes cover the time period from the Roman Empire to the Explorers.  The Cause and effect notes that had the causes for exploration in the boxes and then the effects of exploration in the boxes on the right.  The last item they will need to study is the sheet we did today in class.  The Quiz will be True, False and Multiple Choice
IF YOU ARE IN MY 4TH CORE, THAT CLASS CHOOSE TO PROCEED WITH THE WHO DISCOVERED AMERICAN PRESENTATION.  THE QUIZ WILL BE THURSDAY

Wednesday, October 8th; You will use the sheet that you completed in class to answer the following questions
Describe how the colonists in New France supported themselves?
Compare and contrast the economic activites of New France with those of New Spain.
Name two Dutch settlements in the Americas
How did the geographical location of these settlements contribute to their success?

Thursday, October 9th No Homework tonight
Monday, October 13th:  Complete Roanoke worksheet.
Wednesday, October 15th:  Roanoke Voyages worksheet
do both sides.  Fridaywe will have a quiz on pages 75-82 in the text book.  Students should review their notes from class and the worksheets they had for homework

Thursday. October 16th:  Study for you quiz tomorrow

Monday, October 20th:For your quiz tomorrow,Know the informationwe went over in class about section 1.  Specific things would be:

Representative government
Squanto
Know what country's colony was abandoned after a year
First English settlement in North America was called
What made Jamestown profitable
What is the name of the first representative government in the colonies

Tuesday October 21st:  No Homework

Thursday October 23:  Each student has been given a Open Compare and Contrast Sheet.  they have to compare and contrast Jamestown and the New England Colonies.
First write what is simular between the two colonies
then write how they are different in relation to
Governments
Native American Relations
resources
Why the colony was founded
success.
then they needed to point out patterns of similarities and differences
and write a conclusion.
All this is on the sheet that was given to them.  If they missed placed the sheet everything they need to do is above.

MONDAY OCTOBER 27:  Complete the side two of the Middle Colonies Reading Guide:  Dutch Colonization and
Colonial Population Growth

Tuesday:  There will be a quiz on the Middle Colonies.
Know What 4 colonies were considered the Middle Colonies
What was previously a Dutch colony.
What was the first Proprietary colony
What a royal colony is
What middle colony was considered a "Holy experiment"
How did the Quakers see women?
Why the middle colonies were called America's Breadbasket
most diverse.
Your candidate research sheet is due on Thursday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday October 28th:  Complete Multicultural Worksheet,  We will be going to vote in the Media Center tomorrow.

Monday November 17th:  Please excuse the lack of updates, My husband has had two major strokes and was on life support.  
You will do the take home test and finish the Pirate wanted poster.
i NEED ALL REPORT CARDS SIGN AND RETURNED BY WEDNESDAY

Wednesday November 19th:  Complete persuasive letter to a friend supporting either Gov Tryon or the Regulators.  The letter has to be at least 20 sentences
