Classroom Expectations for English 10 Students: Mrs. Harris
Textbooks and Supplementary Books
Students will use a Glencoe world literature textbook in class. If they wish to check out a copy, they may do so. Throughout the year, students will check out literary works from the Media Center. They are responsible for turning in the supplementary books on time so that other students may begin their study. There will be a replacement cost for lost books.
Writing Information and Other Classroom Materials
Students should include all graded writing samples in their writing folders which are kept in class. Other materials, such as teacher-prepared class notes, vocabulary handouts, and any other handouts may also be placed in their folders. Including teacher-prepared class notes in the folder will be helpful later on as a guide for exam study. The study of grammar and language arts usage will come from one or more of these sources: exercise transparencies, and/or a grammar workbook.
Students will receive vocabulary handouts for each unit. They will use a class set of workbooks to help them learn the definition, association, and application for each word. After students complete their unit quiz, they may include the unit handouts in their writing folder so that the units will be ready to study for the exam. Students are strongly advised to create flashcards, and they must keep unit copies for their exam study.
Important Date to Remember
March 4, 2007—State Writing Assessment. Exact date will be posted in the classroom.
Note: We will learn the format and grading rubric requirements, and we will practice several writing assignments using a classroom set of the coaching manual. Various practices will be graded. Plagiarism Teacher Policy
Students whose work constitutes plagiarism of direct quotes or paraphrasing of another’s ideas will receive a zero on the assignment if they do not correct the plagiarism.
Make-Up Expectations and Teacher Assistance: Schedule a Time with Me and Keep Your Appointment
LHS’s student handout explains the make-up policy procedures for excused and unexcused absences. The policy is posted on the wall in
Room 124. When you miss any work, please see me about a make-up time. Since I have numerous meetings after school, please schedule a time with me to come before school. While you are not required to give up any lunch time, you may opt to set up a time with me. If a longer period of time is needed, please schedule a time after school and notify your parents.
Unexcused Tardies and Behavior
I have posted on the wall LHS’s expectations for tardies. You must sign the tardy sheet located on the desk near the door. The first tardy is a warning; the second, teacher detention at 7:00 A.M., the third, after-school detention.
Eating and the Dress Code
No eating or drinking in class. Follow LHS’s dress code policy.
Supplies and Personal Calendar
Bring your own pencil, pen, and loose-leaf notebook paper to class each day. Create your own personal calendar for assignments. If your parents want to know what your assignments are, show them your calendar.
Student Evaluations, Interims, and Quarter Grades
All quizzes, class work, and other minor work, such as viewing videos is 60% of your grades while tests, essays, research papers, and other major projects count as 40%. You are expected to take your interims home and return them with a parent’s signature. Show your parents the final quarter grades.

Please review these classroom expectations with your parents.
Leesville High School’s Tenth Grade Vocabulary Program: Mrs. Harris
Pre-Test During the first week of each semester, students will take a diagnostic test and
will receive 100 participation points for taking the test. This test will indicate what words students already know.
Unit Tests For the most part, vocabulary tests will be administered each Friday unless
announced differently. If students are absent on the test date, they should be
prepared to make up the test the day they return.
Word Lists Students will receive 20 vocabulary word lists to keep all semester. Other
than the first unit, students can expect to see words from the previous unit on future vocabulary tests. Fifty of these vocabulary words will be covered on
the final exam. For this reason, students should periodically review the word definitions and usage.
Test Setup The test will consist of 25-35 multiple-choice items. Word definition and application will be tested. Students will also be tested on word definition from other units. This process requires students to keep up with the
definitions.
