Huskies information for 2008-2009--Language Arts

This page contains updates on what happened in our class today and the current homework assignments.  Feel free to email me with questions or concerns; I will answer as soon as I am able.

August 25-29, 2008
August 25, 2008--Monday--Class introductions through a nine-word memoir, shared aloud in class.
Homework:  Return forms as soon as possible.
August 26, 2008--Tuesday--Started bio poems in class; literature books passed out.
Homework:  Final copy of bio poem due on Friday (no lined paper, no pencil, and must be decorated).
August 27, 2008--Wednesday--Worked on defining literary terms; passed out grammar books.
Homework:  Complete the first 20 literary terms (using literary handbook in lit book and skipping #6); work on final draft of bio poem.
August 28, 2008--Thursday--Discussed analysis of fiction (novels and short stories) using graphic organizer=CAST-P (characters, action, setting, theme, and point of view).
Homework:  Finish the other literary terms (#21-37); complete the bio poem for tomorrow.
August 29, 2008--Friday--Collected bio poems; distributed and went over language arts letter.
Homework:  Study literary terms for unit test; return signed language arts letter.

September 8, 2008--Monday--Discussion of literary terms, used in connection with Dovey Coe (to start filling in CAST-P chart).
Homework:  Study literary terms for test on Thursday (=nearly 12% of grade); read Dovey Coe pp. 91-109 and work on CAST-P chart.
September 9, 2008--Tuesday--Quiz 1 on Dovey Coe;went over more literary tems using Dovey Coe for examples; discussed specifics of Gustav's Triangle and conflicts.
Homework:  Unit test on literary terms and Gustav's Triangle on Thursday; read pp. 110-130 and do CAST-P chart.
September 10, 2008--Wednesday--Finished discussion of literary terms.
Homework:  Study for literary terms test tomorrow!
September 11, 2008--Thursday--Journal #5:  Thankful; test on literary terms and Gustav's Triangle; passed out memory work sheet.
Homework:  Read pp. 131-152 in Dovey Coe and work on CAST-P chart; memory work due around 9/24.
September 12, 2008--Friday--Returned tests and discussed ways to study for retest; talked about need for grammar study and summarized info about nouns; journal entry 6.
Homework:  Read pp. 153-168 and do CAST-P chart on Dovey Coe; study memory work for 9/24; complete all journal entries if they are not done; retest on literary terms and Gustav's Triangle on Thursday--required for scores of 76 or below (D's and F's) and others optional.

September 15, 2008--Monday--Review of nouns and notes from Friday and did exercises on pp. 74-75 on nouns; discussed adjectives together and came up with notes.

September 16, 2008--Tuesday--Quiz 3 on Dovey Coe; discussion of symbolism (Dovey=dove, bird on p. 22, "war" on p. 52, and colors=white, black, and yellow;  literary devices in passages.
Homework:  Review Dovey Coe and be sure CAST-P chart is finished; memory work due 9/24; retest on literary terms and Gustav's Triangle on Thursday.
September 17, 2008--Wednesday--Collected CAST-P charts on Dovey Coe; Blue Diamond #1 (reading); reflection letter (one page to self about dreams and goals).

October 8, 2008--Wednesday--Collected late work; gave a checklist for proofing the rough draft of the personal narrative; seat work=writing the rough draft of the paper by merging the graphic organizer and brainstorming pages; talked to students about writing test coming next week and new grades for language arts one-on-one.
