Thank you for visiting my "School Notes" site, I teach two classes at LRHS; they are: Housing and Interiors and Teen Living. Family and Consumer Science (FACS) is a vibrant part of the Career and Technical program at Leesville Road High School.

OVERVIEW UPDATE ON OUR CLASS ACTIVITIES:

HOUSING AND INTERIORS -- 1ST PERIOD
May and June
Students finished up their final Sample Board doing a wonderful job with three looks for one room.  The voted for top class choices were tied for Whitney Overturf and Whitney Royals.

The students studied period furniture and toured
Mr. Muira's Furniture Construction Class to learn how furniture is made. The students also created a miniature model of a piece of furniture and shared it with the class.  The student's voted  Kimmie Dufresne as the top choice!

We will complete the year with curriculum focus on Housing Construction, CAD, Careers and House Maintenance.  

    April-The Housing Sample Boards will be on display in the Media Center.  The students had to plan a color scheme for a manufactured home and present it to the class.  The Color wheels were being displayed in the Media Center during March.  They look GREAT and we have recieved many compliments.

March and April:
THe class is studying "Backgrounds" and will learn about floors, walls, windows, window treatments and lighting.  We have had many opportunities for hands on learning in this unit.  

Lighting Quiz will be Tuesday, April 15th and the big Backgrounds Test will be on Wednesday, April 16th.  Students should study all of the vocats on Backgrounds.

Feb.and March Students will focus on Principles and Elements of Design.  We will explore the world of color and will be painting, mixing and matching colors and color schemes.  Students will need their second notebook for the portfolio and foam board (for samples project).  They will design a sample board for a manufactured home.

January Students worked on Housing Options, learning about the pros and cons of buying or renting a home.  They learned how to calculate the cost of a home in relation to various salaries.

TEEN LIVING -- 3RD AND 4TH PERIODS:

May and June-  The students are now working on the Food's and Nutrition Unit.  Food labs will be May 15 and 16th.  Home Cooking Lab is due May 30th and they should be planning a fine meal for the family.  Parents will be grading their efforts.

We will finish the year with a short unit on Housing and we will learn some basic Principals and Elements of Design.

April- The Class will work on the Clothing Unit.  It will include learning about clothing care, dressing appropriately for different occasions, simple sewing repairs by hand and machine.  Many students have not used a sewing machine, so they will learn about the parts and safe operating procedures of the sewing machine.  They will make a small project, a pillow.  Materials will be provided and all equipment is available in the class.  Several students have volunteered to provide stuffing for the pillows.
Clothing Care Test will be Tuesday April 15th.

March -- Teen Living will focus on time and money managment. Homework will be on packets and interviewing family about their tips on how they best manage their time and money.  Credit card abuse will be discussed.  Learning how to write a check and use a check register will also be taught.

March Child Development Students will learn about ways children grow and learn, child care tips and development stages.  Extra credit will be given for students chosing to interview parents of a young child.

March: Consumer Management Unit.  Students are learning to set long and short term goals, manage money and time efficiently, write checks, balance check register and learn about advertisement. Groups will simulate a box factory to learn about business and the unexpected things that can delay production.  

Feb.
  Leadership Papers and presentations are due.
Students have been working on discovering leadership characteristics, types of leaders, parliamentary procedures, and careers.

Jan. students focused on personal development, goal setting, communication skills and roadblocks that could prevent them from reaching their goals.
