Golf Unit
We began our Golf unit after EOG week. We are starting on the "driving range" to learn the swing and provide practice time for all students. Remember to follow the "commands" so we are safe, safe, safe!!!!
We will look at force production, velocity, acceleration, and angles during our golf unit.

Golf Swing:
* grip= fist-fist, interlock, thumbbs    * knees slightly bent     * toe points like your toes
* draw a letter "U"    * make a triangle with your feet & the ball    * chin from shoulder to shoulder
* 3 parts of the swing= take-away, swing for contact, follow through   * keep feet on the ground

After students complete the driving range, we will have our "LINKS @ WAKEFIELD" golf course on the lower field.  Students will work in small groups/pairs to play the 9 hole course starting Friday May 30th.  This is a great way to finish out our PE curriculum.

Lacrosse Unit
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF LACROSSE??? What people began play more than 200 years ago?

HISTORY OF LACROSSE 1 PAGE ESSAY ASSIGNMENT---- DUE MONDAY MAY 12, 2008
(I will still accept this assignment by June 6th)

You are to write a 1 page typed double spaced (1" margins) essay about the "History of Lacrosse".  I am providing websites for you to research.  This is a test assignment for your PE grade for our Lacrosse unit. This is due next Monday in class.  Good luck- email me with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have.

Please include in your essay the following:
Who played the sport in the early years
Why the game was played- was it a competition, was it a celebration, was it part of the culture
What rules, if any, did the game have in the beginning of the sport

DO NOT CUT/PASTE FROM THE INTERNET- that is plagarism.  Also, do NOT use wikipedia.com- not a valid research website.
http://www.laxlinks.com/history/
http://www.uslacrosse.org/the_sport/index.phtml
http://www.sportsknowhow.com/lacrosse/history/lacrosse-history.shtml
http://www.e-lacrosse.com/laxhist.htm

As part of our unit you will be exploring the rich history of the sport to learn the development and changes the sport has experienced.  This will be a great learning experience for you.

We have explored the history of the sport and assessed our current skill level individually and within small groups. Skills introduced and explored included: cradle, scoop, throw, and catch.

Science in PE? You bet ya!  Look at how a lever system and centripedal force impacts the sport of Lacrosse.  Force arms, fulcrums, and gravity all are important to learning the basic skills of Lacrosse.  I hope you had fun on your first day (Friday) and look forward to learning much, much more in the coming weeks!!!

Important aspects for catching include:
absorbing, cradle,  eye-contact, "J-catch", and staying with it.
Throwing: remember... Push-Pull-Point!!!

Game Play- we have started to apply our Lacrosse skills to "small-sided games" in class.  We are using hoops for our goal to focus on teamwork and cooperation during the games.  May 7th we will shift to upright goals.  Remember to involve ALL your teammates- you are more successful with the sum or all your parts.

For our Soccer unit students were able to:
* explore individual skills of dribbling, passing, and catching the ball
* experiment with defensive strategies and possession
* apply defensive and offensive strategies in small-sided activities and team games
* refine individual skills through skill practice and team competition
* work cooperatively with other members of a team on a common goal
* HAVE FUN!
3 fundamental skills for Soccer = pass, catch, dribble

Be prepared to go outside if the weather is above 45 degrees.  Remember a sweatshirt/pants over your PE clothes.  No zippers or buttons... IS IT SAFE????

Mr. Maloney's classes were AWESOME in their juggling unit.  Students were able to juggle 3 objects at the end of the unit.  Keep practicing, you can do it!! (Remember to juggle outside or get permission from your parents/guardians to juggle inside).

HEALTH
We will be concluding the year with our "Abstinence Until Marriage Unit".  Students will receive the WCPSS curriculum lessons in class.  There will be Learning Logs each class period, some may require you to discuss part of the lesson with your parents/guardians.  We will conclude our Health lessons on Friday June 6th.

Substance Abuse Unit
Students developed AWESOME powerpoint presentations on Substance Abuse topics.  Way to go!!! We also watched a video on "blackouts" involving alcohol.
