For the week of June 1st - June 5th, students will review compound sentences and clauses(independent and dependent). We will conclude our in class viewing of the movie, The Phantom Tollbooth, as students will complete Venn diagrams to compare and contrast the play and the movie. In addition, we will review prepositions and prepositional phrases.  We will begin the novel, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. All literature books are to be returned to me this week.

For the week of June 1st - June 5th, students will have the following homework assignments:

Monday, June 1st: Finish the independent and dependent clauses/compound sentences worksheets. Reading logs are due on Friday.

For the week of May 25th - May 29th, students will review sentence structures(simple, compound, and complex) and clauses(independent and dependent). For the week of March 30th - April 3rd, students will take the grammar Blue Diamond assessment. In grammar, we will examine articles (indefinite and definite) and be introduced to prepositions. We will have a writing workshop dealing with an on demand problem-solution essay prompt. We will have a review of analogies that involves in class, group activities, as well as an analogy homework packet.

For the week of March 30th - April 3rd, students will have the following homework assignments:

Monday, March 30th: Reading logs are due on Friday. Study for the EOG terms test on Friday.

Tuesday, March 31st: Finish the article worksheet. Reading logs are due on Friday. Study for the EOG terms test on Friday.

Wednesday, April 1st: Finish the preposition worksheet. Reading logs are due on Friday. Study for the EOG terms test on Friday.

Thursday, April 2nd: Reading logs are due on Friday. Study the EOG terms for the test on Friday. Finish the analogy packet due on Tuesday.

Friday, April 3rd: Finish the analogy packet due on Tuesday.

For the week of March 23rd - March 27th, students will take the EOG terms test and the reading Blue Diamond Assessment. In grammar, they will review subjects and predicates. In addition, they will be given the next list of EOG terms for the vocabulary test on April 3rd. The next EOG terms are as follows: alliteration, flashback, figurative language, personification, audience, climax, genre, cliche, tone, rhyme scheme, allusion, simile, foreshadow, anecdote, and fable.

For the week of March 16th - March 20th, students will explore the genre of poetry. Poetry based centers activities will be set-up in class for students to compose the following types of poems: limerick, haiku, concrete and/or free verse. Students will read and examine various sound devices, imagery, and figurative language in poems. We will also have an in class Poetry Cafe in which students are asked to bring in soda and/or store bought desserts to share with classmates as we listen to student written poems on Friday. In addition, students will make poetry pocket foldables and copy some of their poems into their poetry foldables.

For the week of March 16th - March 20th, students will have the following homework assignments:

Monday, March 16th: Finish the poetry chart. Study the EOG terms (onomatopoeia, limerick, mood, antagonist, metaphor, protagonist, oxymoron, hyperbole, lyric poem, prose, imagery, and paradox)for the vocabulary test on March 23rd. Tuesday, March 17th: Finish all poems. For the week of March 9th - March 13th, students will have a quarter 3 Blue Diamond assessment in reading. Students will review the EOG terms to be used for the vocabulary test on March 23rd. Students will have an EOG review activity involving reading comprehension.  In grammar, student will review subject/verb agreement and examine verb tenses (present, past, and future).  

For the week of March 9th - March 13th, students will have the following homework assignments:

Monday, March 9th: Look up and write down the EOG terms (onomatopoeia, limerick, mood, antagonist, metaphor, protagonist, oxymoron, hyperbole, lyric poem, prose, imagery, and paradox)using your literature book's glossary starting on page 848, if you did not finish on Friday. Study these words for the EOG terms vocabulary test on March 23rd. Finish the subject/verb agreement review sheet. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Tuesday, March 10th: Look up and write down the EOG terms (onomatopoeia, limerick, mood, antagonist, metaphor, protagonist, oxymoron, hyperbole, lyric poem, prose, imagery, and paradox)using your literature book's glossary starting on page 848, if you did not finish on Friday. For the week of March 2nd - March 6th, students will finish the in class viewing of the movie Sounder, allowing the students an opportunity to compare and contrast the book to the movie using Venn diagrams and triple Venn diagrams for plus students. In addition, students will have an in class writing workshop in which they will write a critical response to literature essay on the novel Sounder. Students must do the following:

Utilizing the book Sounder, analyze the plot, at least one character, the setting, and/or theme. The essay should be in the five paragraph essay format. The analysis of the book should be in the five paragraph essay format with an introduction, 3 supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion.

For the week of March 2nd - March 6th, students will have the following homework assignments:

Monday, March 2nd(no school, snow day): Study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday.  Reading logs are due on Friday.

Tuesday, March 3rd: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Wednesday, March 4th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Thursday, March 5th: Reading logs are due on Friday.

Friday, March 6th: Unfinished critical response to literature essays are due on Monday for students who are unable to finish the essay in class.

For the week of February 23rd - February 28th, students will finish reading the novel Sounder by William H. Armstrong.  The students will have a test on the novel this week too. Later in the week, we will have an in class viewing of the movie Sounder, allowing the students an opportunity to compare and contrast the book to the movie using Venn diagrams and triple Venn diagrams for plus students.  

For the week of February 23rd - February 28th, students will have the following homework assignments:

Monday, February 23rd: Finish the Sounder chapter 7-8 questions. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Tuesday, February 24th: Study for the Sounder test on Wednesday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Wednesday, February 25th: Reading logs are due on Friday.

Thursday, February 26th: Reading logs are due on Friday.

Friday, February 27th: No homework.

For the week of February 16th - February 20th, students will continue reading the novel Sounder by William H. Armstrong and focus on the novel's themes.

For the week of February 2nd - February 6th, students will obtain a new list of vocabulary words and  vocabulary review activities in preparation for the next vocabulary quiz on Friday.  Students will continue doing EOG review activities. Students will work on analogies and learn about the different types of analogies (synonyms, antonyms, function, cause-effect, part to whole, and type of relationships) In grammar, students will focus on complete subjects and complete predicates.

For the week of February 2nd - February 6th, students will have the following homework assignments:

Monday, February 2nd - Finish the complete subjects/complete predicates worksheet. Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday and finish the vocabulary review activity due on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Tuesday, February 3rd - Finish the analogy worksheet. Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday and finish the vocabulary review activity due on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Wednesday, February 4th - Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday and finish the vocabulary review activity due on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

For the week of January 26th - January 30th, students will finish working on their problem/solution essays during the writing workshop.  Students will utilize effective reading strategies in preparation for the EOG test.  In grammar, students will focus on fragments and clauses (subordinate and independent).

For the week of January 26th - January 30th, students will have the following homework assignments:

For the week of January 19th - January 23rd, students will continue studying the genre of nonfiction and finish working on drawing inferences. In addition, we will have a problem/solution essay writing workshop.  Students will work on generating their own problem/solution essays.

Tuesday, January 13th: Study for the apostrophe quiz on Thursday.  Reading logs are due on Friday. The commercial project assignment for extra credit is due next Wednesday. This extra credit project requires students to write a good “sales pitch” (argument) explaining why their product should be bought and used.  They may use any of the bias techniques we learned in class like the one-sided argument, semantic slanting, loaded words, and/or stereotyping. In addition, students can use any of the propaganda techniques we learned like testimonial, bandwagon, glittering generalities, etc. (Please refer to the propaganda handout, see Ms. Sabb if you misplaced your handout) Write or type the sales pitch, and it must be at least one paragraph. In addition, students must create a poster or DVD that advertises their product. (Include at least one bias or propaganda technique in the poster or DVD)
