For the week of March 15th - March 19th, students will conclude the poetry unit by reciting their memorized poems to the class.  In addition, we will review analogies. We will take our monthly visit to the media center to obtain reading books.  **Thank you to all parents/guardians who contributed food, drinks, and/or supplies for our poetry jazz cafe last week.**

For the week of March 15th - March 19, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, March 15: Memorize your poem for tomorrow and  bring the poem to class tomorrow. Extra credit is due on Friday.  Reading logs are due on Friday.  

Tuesday, March 16th: Extra credit is due on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Wednesday, March 17th: The analogy worksheet is due tomorrow. Extra credit is due on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Thursday, March 18th: Extra credit is due on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Friday, March 19th: No homework.


For the week of March 8th - March 12th, students will continue to have EOG test preparation/reading comprehension activities in class. We will begin our poetry unit which will include a jazz, poetry cafe on Wednesday in which students will create poems and pocket poetry foldables.  **Your child is welcome to bring in any drinks or snack foods to share with the class on Wednesday. **Any edible items may be dropped off in my classroom on Wednesday morning**

For the week of March 8th - March 12th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, March 8th: Reading logs are due on Friday.

For the week of March 1st - March 5th, students will view the Tuck Everlasting movie. Using Venn diagrams, students will compare and contrast the book and the movie. **Plus students will use triple Venn diagrams to compare and contrast the book, movie, and their lives** Students will have an in class writing workshop in which they will write a critical response essay analyzing the novel Tuck Everlasting. In grammar, we will focus on the subject-verb agreement.  Lastly, we will have EOG preparation/reading comprehension activities in class.

For the week of February 22nd - February 26th, students will conclude reading the novel Tuck Everlasting. They will be given a comprehensive test on the novel on Thursday which will include vocabulary from the novel in chapters 9 - the Epilogue.

For the week of February 22nd - February 26th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, February 22nd: Finish the novel chapter 9-20 questions. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Tuesday, February 23rd: Finish the novel chapter 21-Epilogue questions. Reading logs are due on Friday.  

Wednesday, February 24th: Study for the Tuck Everlasting test tomorrow. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Thursday, February 25th: Reading logs are due tomorrow.

Friday, February 26th: No homework.

For the week of February 15th - February 19th, students will continue reading the novel Tuck Everlasting in class. They will be given vocabulary from the novel to study for the vocabulary quiz this week.  The words are as follows: axis, contemplation, disheartened, implore, primly, recede, rueful, and venture.

For the week of February 15 - February 19th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, February 15th: Finish the novel chapter 1-8 questions.  Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday.  Reading logs are due on Friday.

Tuesday, February 16th: Finish the vocabulary activity due tomorrow (periods 1, 2, 4, and 7). Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday.  Reading logs are due on Friday.  

Wednesday, February 17th: Finish creating the novel word search due tomorrow (period 6 only). Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday.  Reading logs are due on Friday.

In addition, students will have introductory reading and activities for our next novel, Tuck Everlasting, which will be read in class.

For the week of February 1st - February 5th, students will have the following assignments:

Wednesday, February 3rd: No school, snow day.

Thursday, February 4th: Finish the literary device crossword puzzle due tomorrow. Study for the vocabulary quiz on Monday.

Friday, February 5th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Monday.

For the week of January 25th - January 29th, students in periods 1 and 2 will have another writing workshop in which they will write a summary essay that analyzes a newspaper article using the 5 W's model (who, what, when, why, and where), as periods 4, 6, and 7 have already had the workshop last week.  Students will receive the next list of EOG terms to study for the vocabulary quiz next week on Thursday. The words are as follows: tone, flashback, allusion, audience, climax, genre, cliche, rhyme scheme, anecdote, fable, foreshadow, figurative language, personification, simile, and alliteration. In addition, students will have a preposition quiz on Friday.

For the week of January 25th - January 29th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, January 25th: Teacher workday, no school.

Tuesday, January 26th: Finish the summary essay due on Thursday.  Look up the EOG terms and study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday of next week. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Wednesday, January 27th: Finish the summary essay due on Thursday.  Look up the EOG terms and study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday of next week. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Thursday, January 28th: Reading logs are due tomorrow. Look up the EOG terms and study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday.

Friday, January 29th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday.

For the week of January 18th - January 22nd, students will continue the unit of nonfiction. In grammar, students will focus on prepositions. We will have our monthly media center circulation visit this week in which students will be able to checkout library books. In addition, students in periods 4, 6, and 7 will have another writing workshop in which they will write a summary essay that analyzes a newspaper article using the 5 W's model (who, what, when, why, and where). Periods 1 and 2 will begin the writing workshop next week. **Students will be given their own grammar workbooks today, all past grammar homework exercises were derived from this book**

For the week of January 18th - January 22nd, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, January 18th: Holiday, no school.

Tuesday, January 19th: Finish the critical essay due on Wednesday.  Preposition workbook exercises on pages 33 and 34 are due tomorrow.  Reading logs are due on Friday.

Wednesday, January 20th: Reading logs are due on Friday.  

Thursday, January 21st: Reading logs are due on Friday.

Friday, January 22nd: The article summary essay is due on Thursday.



For the week of January 11th - January 15th, students will continue the unit of nonfiction and examine bias in literature. Students will focus on analogies and the various analogy relationships (part to whole, similar, dissimilar concepts, function, change, etc.). In addition, students will have a writing workshop in which they will write a critical essay that analyzes print ads/commercials for tools of propaganda and persuasion.  Students will receive a list of EOG terms to study for the vocabulary quiz next Tuesday. The words are as follows: lyric poem, oxymoron, imagery, limerick, paradox, prose, hyperbole, protagonist, antagonist, metaphor, mood, onomatopoeia.

For the week of January 11th - January 15th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, January 11th: Commercial/ad project is due on Tuesday. Book reports are due on Wednesday. Reading logs are due on Friday.  Study for the vocabulary quiz next Tuesday.

Tuesday, January 12th: Book reports are due on Wednesday. Reading logs are due on Friday.  Study for the vocabulary quiz next Tuesday.

Wednesday, January 13th: Reading logs are due on Friday.  Study for the vocabulary quiz next Tuesday. The analogy packet is due on Tuesday. Finish the critical essay due next Wednesday.

Thursday, January 14th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Tuesday. Reading logs are due on Friday. The analogy packet is due on Tuesday. Finish the critical essay due next Wednesday.

Friday, January 15th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Tuesday. The analogy packet is due on Tuesday. Finish the critical essay due next Wednesday.


For the week of January 4th - January 8th, students will continue the unit of nonfiction and examine propaganda and commonly used persuasive tools used for propaganda. Students will also distinguish between fact and opinion in literature. Students should review the vocabulary words for the quiz on Friday. The words are as follows: sinister, compliance, conviction, tenacious, indulgent, affectionate, singularity, tumultuous, and compelled.  

For the week of January 4th - January 8th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, January 4th: Reading logs are due on Friday.
Book reports are due on January 13th.

Tuesday, January 5th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday. The commercial/ad project is due on Tuesday. Book reports are due on January 13th.

For the week of December 7th - December 11th, students will begin the unit of nonfiction and examine the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, and why) of nonfiction. In grammar, students will continue focusing on subjects/predicates and review fragments. Students will be given a new list of vocabulary words on Thursday.  The words are as follows: tedious, disdain, lament, mortal, dotage, woo, aggravate, revel, renown, and abide.

For the week of December 7th - December 11th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, December 7th: Complete the fragments worksheet. Reading logs are due on Friday.  

Tuesday, December 8th: Review the subjects/predicates/fragments worksheets for the test tomorrow. Reading logs are due on Friday.  

Wednesday, December 9th: Reading logs are due on Friday.  

Thursday, December 10th: Finish the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, and why) of nonfiction exercise due tomorrow. Reading logs are due on Friday. Study for the vocabulary quiz on Wednesday of next week.

Friday, December 11th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Wednesday of next week.

For the week of November 30th - December 4th, students will conclude the unit of fiction with a fiction/literary elements test on Friday. In grammar, students will focus on subjects/predicates(simple, compound, and complete) and clauses(independent and dependent).  In addition, we will have exercises on using context clues, as well as distinguising the differences between glossaries, dictionaries, and thesauruses.

For the week of November 30th - December 4th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, November 30th: Complete the subjects/predicates worksheet. Reading logs are due on Friday.  Study for the fiction test on Friday.

Tuesday, December 1st: Finish the complete subjects/complete predicates worksheet. Reading logs are due on Friday.  Study for the fiction test on Friday.

Wednesday, December 2nd: Finish the compound subject/compound predicate worksheet. Reading logs are due on Friday.  Study for the fiction test on Friday.

Thursday, December 3rd: Finish the independent/dependent clauses worksheet. Reading logs are due on Friday.  Study for the fiction test on Friday.

For the week of November 23rd - November 27th, students will continue the unit of fiction with a focus on drama, as they analyze the play, "Gluskabe and Old Man Winter".  In addition, they will have a missing assignment make up day.

For the week of November 16th - November 20th, students will study myths, fables, plays, and literary elements, as they continue the unit of fiction. In grammar, students will focus on action and linking verbs. Students will have a vocabulary quiz on the following words: Abominable, impudence, privy, betrothal, blasphemy, dovecote, peevish, joust, shire, poultice, and gittern.

For the week of November 16th - November 20th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, November 16th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Tuesday, November 17th: Complete the action verb sheet due tomorrow. Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Wednesday, November 18th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Thursday, November 19th: Complete the linking verb sheet due tomorrow. Finish the fable packet due tomorrow. Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

For the week of November 9th - November 13th, students will conclude reading the novel Catherine Called Birdy by Karen Cushman in class. On Friday, there will be a test on the novel in which students must review their novel questions packet to prepare. In addition, students will do homonym and synonym exercises. Lastly, students will be given a list of vocabulary words from the novel for the vocabulary quiz next Friday.

For the week of November 9th - November 13th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, November 9th: Do the novel chapter 8 and 9 (April and May) questions due tomorrow. Reading logs are due on Friday.

Tuesday, November 10th: Do the novel chapter 10, 11, 12, and 13 (June, July, August, and September) questions due on Thursday. Reading logs are due on Friday.

For the week of September 28th - October 2nd, students will have a media center technology orientation.  We will analyze components of literature like point of view, plot, mood, and tone in the fictional short story "Stray".  In addition, we will have an in class writing workshop that will involve utilizing the 5 paragraph essay format.  The essay will be a personal narrative essay in which students will write about an incident in their lives that had a profound impact.

For the week of September 28th - October 2nd, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, September 28th: No school, teacher workday.

Tuesday, September 29th: Reading logs are due on Friday. The book report will be due on October 16th.  It will have differentiated book report options for students to choose for ESL and Plus students.

Students will take the second part of the Language Arts grammar diagnostic assessment.

For the week of September 7th - September 11th, students will focus on pronouns (personal pronouns).  In addition, they will be introduced to the genre of fiction and the various types of fiction.  

For the week of September 7th - September 11th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, September 7th: No school, Labor Day.  

Tuesday, September 8th: Finish the book recommendation letter due on Wednesday. Plus students must compare and contrast their book to another book in the letter. Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday, and complete the vocabulary review activity due on Friday. The words are as follows: keen, regal, insight, trivial, triumph, condone, oppressed, roam, ingratitude, and yearning.  

Wednesday, September 9th: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday, and complete the vocabulary review activity due on Friday. The words are as follows: keen, regal, insight, trivial, triumph, condone, oppressed, roam, ingratitude, and yearning.

Thursday, September 10th: Finish the personal pronoun worksheet due tomorrow. Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday, and complete the vocabulary review activity due on Friday. The words are as follows: keen, regal, insight, trivial, triumph, condone, oppressed, roam, ingratitude, and yearning.

Friday, September 11th: No homework

For the week of August 31st - September 4th, students will review the 8 parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.  In addition, they will be given the list of words for the upcoming vocabulary quiz next Friday.  The words are as follows: keen, regal, insight, trivial, triumph, condone, oppressed, roam, ingratitude, and yearning.  

For the week of August 31st - September 4th, students will have the following assignments:

Monday, August 31st: Finish the "I Am Poem" due on Wednesday.

Tuesday, September 1st: Finish the "I Am Poem" due on Wednesday. Finish the noun worksheet #1.

Wednesday, September 2nd: Finish the "I Am Poem" due on Wednesday. Finish the noun worksheet #2 (all periods except for period 6).

Thursday, September 3rd: Finish the noun worksheet #2 (period 6 only). Study for the vocabulary quiz next Friday, and complete the vocabulary review activity due next Friday.

Friday, September 4th:  Study for the vocabulary quiz next Friday, and complete the vocabulary review activity due next Friday.  Finish the book recommendation letter due on Wednesday. Plus students must compare and contrast the book to another book in the letter.


For the week of August 25th - August 28th, students will be introduced to the school/classroom rules, policies, and procedures. In addition, they will be given an in class, informal reading and grammar diagnostic assessment in order to determine their reading and grammar level and ability.  

For the week of August 25th - August 28th, students will have the following assignments:

Tuesday, August 25th: No homework.

Wednesday, August 26th: Student information forms are due tomorrow.  Bring two composition books (1 for Language Arts and 1 for your Guided Study class) as soon as possible. Finish the Read All About Me assignment due on Friday.

Thursday, August 27th: Student information forms are due tomorrow.  Bring two composition books (1 for Language Arts and 1 for your Guided Study class) as soon as possible. Finish the Read All About Me assignment due on Friday

Friday, August 28th: No homework.
