NBCT DIRECTORY UPDATED
NBPTS has added the search-by-district functionality to the NBCT Directory. Remember that the NBCT Directory is only as current as the information provided by NBCTs in their profiles. PCS NBCTs should check to make sure their information is updated as soon as possible.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was created to identify national standards for techers and offer certification to those teachers who meet them. NBPTS does this through high and rigorous standards that define accomplished teching. The NBPTS Standards are based on Five Core Propositions. Those propositions are:
I. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
II. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
III. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
IV. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
V. Teachers are members of learning communities.
To obtain NBPTS certification, applicants undergo an extensive performance-based evaluation. North Carolina ranks number one in the nation as having the most National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). There are 224 NBCTs working in Pitt County Schools.
ASSESSMENT FEE: North Carolina will pay, up front, the candidate assessment fee for eligible teachers. Teachers do not have to repay the fee as long as they complete the full National Board Certification process and teach in NC the entire year following completion. Candidates are eligible for state funding if they are paid entirely from state funds; have completed three full years in North Carolina Public Schools (this includes DOC, DHHS, Office of Juvenile Justice, and public charter schools); hold a valid, clear, continuing North Carolina teaching license (or as a school counselor if applying for the ECYA/School Counseling certificate); have not previously received State Funds for participating in the NBPTS assessment; and engage in direct classroom instruction or library/media work 70% of the time over the course of the academic year. Teachers paid from federal funds may apply for part-funding of the assessment fee from federal subsidy funds.
NBPTS CERTIFICATE RENEWAL: National Board Certification is valid for 10 years. If an NBCT wishes to renew their certification, the National Board "Profile of Professional Growth" must be completed prior to the expiration date of his/her certificate and can only renew in his or her original certificate area. NBCTS may begin work on the "Profile of Professional Growth" as early as year 8 of the certification period, pending completion of development and subsequent availability of the renewal instrument. Effective September 29, 2003, the fee for the renewal NB Certification is $1,150, which includes a non-refundable application fee of $300. For a complete Q&A about certificate renewal, see link below. North Carolina DOES NOT provide financial assistance for rennewal.
National Board Assessors Interested in being a National Board Assessor? You do not have to be a National Board Certified Teacher to be a candidate. Many teachers interested in the process find being an assessor helpful in preparing them for candidacy.
