Welcome to Mrs. Swinson's
Curriculum Assistance Class!
We have ended another wonderful school year. I am proud of all of my 6th, 7th and 8th grade students! You did a wonderful job this year and hard work pays off! To my 6th and 7th grade students: have a wonderful and safe summer and I will see you again in August.
To my 8th grade students: Almon - Re', Brandon, Brittany, Calvin, Charlie, David, India, Jackson, Kayla, Lorenzo, Lynitra, Shaquita, Spencer, and Quintus - enjoy your summer, rest and play safe! Good luck in high school. I know you will all do very well! Keep in touch! You will all be missed!!
Rising 6th grade students: I look forward to meeting you. Keep your eyes open for information regarding our Open House in August. I look forward to getting to know you and working with you during the 2008-2009 school year. Middle School is very exciting!
Students - remember to bring all materials to class that you will need for my class. Any work, homework or anything you might need help with.
A few quick reminders:
1) Remember that you can bring work to me for help during the day and during my class time. Use it wisely!
2) You have a planner - be sure to copy home assignments and tests/quizzes into your planner- it will help you in the long run.
3) Make sure you have your planner with you at all times. You have to have it even when you come to my class or your other electives. You cannot leave the classroom without it!
4) Try your best!

At C.M Eppes we use daily planners or agendas. These are wonderful tools when used correctly. Please remind your children of a few things:
School planners/agendas are a wonderful way to keep up with assignments and upcoming information. I sign off at the end of the day for many of my students. They stop by my room and I initial that they have copied information down. This way parents can keep track of assignments and tests. However, students need to take the responsibility of copying down the information.

Also, students may use my class to review for tests or work on projects or assignments for any class. There is no reason for any of my students to have missing assignments as we always have time to get them done in my room and can usually squeeze some additional time out of their teachers with enough notice.
Please remind your children to check their work. Many come to me for read aloud tests and extended time on their tests. This helps tremendously. Encourage your child to take advantage of this and work slowly and accurately on their work while checking it before going back to class.

Weekly Routine:
Students are responsible for a variety of assignments in this Curriculum Assistance class each week. The daily structure is the same each week. The class format goes as follows:
Mondays - Journal Writing - each student must respond
to one topic by Friday each week.
Tuesdays - Reading Comprehension - students will work
as a group and independently on comprehension
skills including EOG type questions and
practice. We will also use techniques to
teach and improve reading skills.
Wednesdays - Remediation - students are required to
bring work from a regular education class.
They may bring homework, a project, test
preparation work, or work that they want
to practice for mastery.
Thursdays - Math Calculations and skills - students
will practice grade level and basic skills
for mastery and assistance with current
grade level objectives.
Fridays - Assessment - students will be assessed in a
variety of areas to determine present levels
of performance and IEP progress and growth.
Classroom structure can vary at any given time. I structure my class on the needs of the students. If we need to alter any activity due to other work or assignments, we will do so!

I am available to stay after school for assistance when needed. I need 2 days notice and as long as I do not have another appointment, I would be glad to stay to offer extra support. Please make arrangements to pick your child up at 4:00, if we agree to have them stay after school with me.

I have an incentive program in my classroom. It is geared toward positive work and behavior that takes place outside of my room. Students earn points each week when they receive positive feedback from their other teachers, good grades, great behavior or going above and beyond. They accumulate points and can cash their points in for prizes or treats every few weeks. This works wonderfully for almost all of my students. Many have earned the maximum points each week. Students will receive extra points for A's and B's. Straight A's or straight A's and B's will also be rewarded!
Do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance to you. My planning periods are fist thing in the morning 8:25-9:25 and again 11:55 - 12:55. Again, please E-mail me if you need anything over the summer (swinsol.cme@pitt.k12.nc.us).
The only supplies required for my class are:
Pencil
Folder (any type to use as class portfolio - your choice)
Lined paper
