The PTA will host the sheriff's department for a special session about internet safety and bullying on Thurs Jan 15th beginning at 6:30 in the media center. Students are encouraged to attend, but will be dismissed with staff members toward the end of the program for some conversation intended for adults only. The Green Team will meet Thurs Jan 8 from 3:30-4:30 in Ms. O Connor's room. All members should plan to attend.
Wilmington Health Access for Teens (WHAT) has opened an office in the arts hallway of Murray. WHAT offers mental health services for depression, anxiety, relationship problems, academic distress, ADHD and other behavior disorders. Psychological evaluation and psychiatric services are available. Most major insurance is accepted and ability to pay is not a criterion for receipt of services. The "Book Cafe" will soon be opening during lunch periods. Students can bring used books to trade, or purchase used books with talon tickets. Middle School age book donations for the cause are also greatly appreciated! More information to come . . .
Applications for school Open Choice will be available on line and at all schools beginning February 20th. They will be accepted March 9 through April 17th.
Yearbook order forms are available in the front office. The next yearbook sale will begin December 19th for $27 and then March 13 for $30. Checks can be made to Murray Middle School. See Ms. Summerlin with any questions.
Boxtops winners for the first quarter were: Woodard, Kidwell and Smith homebases. The next contest will award individuals who collect the most boxtops, regardless of grade level, so keep saving! We are also collecting used computer printer cartridges, Tyson chicken labels and old cell phones in the front office.
Murray sweatshirts and t shirts are available for purchase in the school store during lunch hours while supplies last. (T shirts $11, sweatshirts $22)
Murray students have been given yellow flyers about the Math Homework Hotline. This show is broadcasted live every Wednesday at 6:30PM on TLN - Time Warner ch. 5 and Charter ch. 12. Students call 254-4106 for help solving math problems with the "Math Pros." Students presenting the most challenging problem win a free Domino's pizza!
Due to overcrowding on school buses, students may not ride home on a bus other than the one assigned, as directed by the transportation department.
4 PTA meetings will be held at Murray in conjunction with the administration. Please note the following dates: Jan 15 and March 12. This is a great time to ask questions and learn what is happening at school.

Parent reminder: Please bring ID with you when checking out your child or visiting the school. New Hanover County schools policy requires visitors to have ID at all times in the building. Visitors must check in at the office before entering the school for any reason.
All parents are invited to attend School Improvement Team (SIT) meetings at Murray where school wide issues are discussed and decisions made. They are held the 2nd Wednesday (Dec 10 this month) of every month at 3:45 in the media center.
A physical is required to try out for any sport at Murray. Free physicals were offered to all New Hanover County students in the summer. Forms for private doctors to complete, are available in the front office or can be downloaded from the NHCS website.
Parents: Please be conscious of checking students out of class only when absolutely necessary. When students are called out of class, the lesson for all in the classroom is disrupted. Thanks for your help as we work to maximize our instructional time. A link to "Connect with Kids" is listed as #10 below. There you can sign up to receive an age appropriate e mail newsletter with very relevant information for middle school parents.
There is a lost and found located in the Student Services office next to the Media Center. Please encourage your child to check it regularly as clothing especially, accumulates quickly and is eventually donated.
Drug Awareness Tip: Recently, recreational and experimental use of prescription drugs has overtaken maijuana as the #1 drug of choice for teens. They are easy to obtain at home, widely available as legal drugs and safer to use. 22% of 8th graders and 56% of 12th graders used maijuana according to New Hanover Co Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2007.
