New Hanover County Board of Education members will participate in a Board Work Session regarding Middle School Redistricting on Tues Nov 24 at 9AM in the Spencer Board Room. Board members will work with the New Hanover County Schools Redistricting Committee to continue the development of a middle school redistricting plan. New Hanover County middle schools are being redistricted due to the addition of a new middle school, Holly Shelter Middle School , which is located in the Castle Hayne community. The public may attend the work session, though no public input will be allowed.
NHCS-TV will tape the work session and broadcast it on Saturday, November 28th beginning at 9:00 a.m. on The Learning Network of the Cape Fear – Time-Warner Channel 5 and Charter Cable Channel 12, for parents and other members of the public who were unable to attend.
Report Cards will be sent home with students on November 9. Our school report card will also be included as well as Barnes and Noble vouchers.
8th grade band students are invited to join the Ashley Screaming Eagle Regiment for a band social/skate night at the Ice House on Saturday Nov 14th beginning at 5PM. Admission is $10 and includes skate rental.
The PTA holds a national "Reflections" contest each year. Any student can enter works of film, photography, musical compostiton, visual art, literature/writing, or dance choreography based on this year's theme of "Beauty is . . ." Deadline for entries is Nov 30th. Contact Carol Garrason at 264-1283 with any questions.
A student sponsored "Caps for Chemo" collection is being held in the cafeteria. Turn in any plastic bottle caps (not milk lids) to the collction bins. 5000 caps pay for one cancer treatment.
Murray has entered a contest with the Harris Teeter on the corner of Sanders and CB Rd. to collect plastic bags. Bags must be submitted to Harris Teeter in 30 gal size bags or turned in to homeroom teachers at Murray. Contest ends Nov 10th.
Nov 12-14, any purchases made at Barnes and Noble will earn money for Murray PTA if a voucher is included at check out. Vouchers will be sent home with report cards on Nov 9 and can be requested at Barnes and Noble. A percentage of food sales from Red Robin will also come to Murray on Thursday evening. On November 18 a parent/student workshop will be held at Murray in conjunction with the College Foundation of NC beginning in the cafeteria at 6:30PM. Myths about who can attend college or technical school and resources for financial aid will be shared. All are invited to attend.
The Fall Play, Twice Upon a Time, will be showing at Minnie Evans Fri Nov 20 and Sat Nov 21st at 7PM, and Sun Nov 22 at 3PM. Admission is $5 (children under 5 are free).
The Math Homework Hotline is broadcast live every Wednesday at 6:30PM on TLN, Time Warner ch 5 or Charter ch 12. Call in to 254-4106 and talk with the Math Pros!
The after school bus will resume beginning October 1st. It will pick up students at Murray on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30. Students must sign up to ride the bus with the teacher for whom they are staying late.
As concerns about H1N1 infuenza continue, please be extra cautious this year if you suspect your child is ill, as this flu in very contagious. Students with a fever of 100 or higher are not permitted in school and students should be fever free (without medication) for 24 hours before returning.

All parents are invited to attend School Improvement Team (SIT) meetings at Murray where school wide issues are discussed and decisions made. The next full team meeting will be held November 12th in the media center at 3:45.
Wilmington Health Access for Teens (WHAT) has opened an office in the arts hallway of Murray. WHAT offers mental health services for depression, anxiety, relationship problems, academic distress, ADHD and other behavior disorders. Psychological evaluation and psychiatric services are available. Most major insurance is accepted and ability to pay is not a criterion for receipt of services. PTA is collecting box tops, used computer printer cartridges, and old cell phones in the front office. The box tops collection contest will be announced Sept 23, so start saving!

New Hanover County Schools has scheduled Gang 101 Trainings for the 2009-2010 school year in conjunction with the sheriff's department. The first will be held at Ashley High School from 6-8PM on November 12th. All trainings are open to the public, and no registration is required. Due to the law enforcement sensitive material being presented, students will not be allowed to participate.
