Announcements are updated and entered frequently to help you keep up with Murray activities.  Click on Murray Calendar on the Murray homepage - then NHCS Events Calendar, then Murray for additional dates and times.

At times, the voicemail or e mail malfunctions at Murray.  I f you ever try to contact a teacher or staff member, and your call is not returned within 48 hours, please call the front office so a hand written note can be delivered to the mailbox, or send an email through Ms. Bliss or Mr. McCarty.

Current Announcements

Murray Drama Night @ Zaxby's was a great success.  Restaurant sales netted over $400 for the drama department.  With raffle profits, about $1000 was raised.  Thank you to those who were able to support this fundraiser.  The Valentine Ring Raffle runs through Feb 12th (pulled at dance).

Murray student talent show auditions will be held Feb 4th after school.  The talent show will be Mar 17 at 6PM.  See Mr. Jones with any questions.

Congratulations to the following students who auditioned for and will be performing in Greenville with all district band Feb 6th: Alberto Cruz, Clara Hare Grogg, Michael Johnson, and Lizzie Rhoades.

Congratulations to Michael Clifton who won second place in the county science fair for Earth Science.

Mr. Daniel Kempf is the intern working with Mr. Hager.  His name was reported incorrectly in the newsletter.  (sorry!)

Fri Feb 5 will be a Papa John’s Fundraiser for the PTA.

Isaac Bear and Wilmington Early College Applications, teacher recommendations and essay are due Fri Feb 26.  Contact Ms. Tucker with any questions.

Thinking about college??  A free workshop presented by office of scholarships and financial aid (UNCW and CFCC) will be held for parents and students grades 8-12 from 9-12 PM at Bear Hall at UNCW campus on Feb 27.  No registration is needed.

The New Hanover County School District has partnered with the American Red Cross – Cape Fear Chapter to raise money for the International Response Fund in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January12.  “Heroes for Haiti” is the district wide fundraising campaign recently launched by New Hanover County Schools to raise money in support of disaster relief efforts in Haiti.   Murray will participate through collecting financial donations during lunch times.  Donor names will be displayed on red squares in the hallway until Feb 5th.  Awards will be given to the top 5 donors and homebase with most participation.  The NHCS campaign will run through February 12 and proceeds raised will be presented to the American Red Cross at a subsequent school board meeting.  Presently Ms. Beecher’s class is first for 6th grade, Ms. Rice for 7th and Ms. Wells for 8th.

Rocame will be selling specialized candy grams during lunch for Valentine’s Day.

Many volunteers will be needed for “Metric Olympics” being planned by the Murray Math Coach, Ms. Crace.  If you are available for any of the following updated times, please contact Wendy.dahlin@nhcs.net or 790-2363 ext 170.

A meeting for parents regarding changing standards for Math will be held on March 4th at 6:30PM in the Spencer Board room.

 

Open workouts will be held for Baseball at Murray Jan 28th from 3:30-5:00.  They will continue at the same time every Tues and Thurs in February and March until try outs on Mar 19th beginning at 3:30.

 

Wilmington Little League is signing up boys and girls (ages 4-17) for Spring season on Jan 30, 31, Feb 6,7,13,14,20,21,27 and 28 from 1-4PM at Veteran’s Park.  Call 617-0328 or 512-6440 for more information.

 

Coach Welliver has registration forms for Seahawk Starz Volleyball Clinic Mar 21, 28, Apr 11 and 25 from 1-3:00 at UNCW.

The band concert originally scheduled for Feb 18th has been cancelled.

The Jr. Tri M induction ceremony will be held Feb 9th at 7PM.

8th Grade parents who are interested in helping plan the end of the year party/dance, are invited to attend the first planning meeting at 4:30 on Feb 9th in the media center.  See Ms. Martin with any questions.

 

  A Valentine’s Dance will be held Fri Feb 12th 3:30-5:30pm.   Admission $3

A school wide open house will be held Feb 10 from 6-7 PM.   A PTA meeting will be held first in the cafeteria at 5:30.   8th grade parents will be invited to Minnie Evans for high school scheduling information as well as information from Wilmington Early College.  Scheduling will be done in 8th grade classrooms Feb 16-22.

The All County chorus concert will be held Sat Feb 13 at 2:30 PM in Minnie Evans.  The community is invited to attend.

The Jr. Beta Club induction ceremony will be held Feb 23 at 6:30PM.

EOG testing will be May 24-26. Retests begin on May 27.  Many proctors will be needed.

PTA is collecting box tops, used computer printer cartridges, and old cell phones in the front office. 

A student sponsored "Caps for Chemo" collection is being held in the cafeteria.    Turn in any plastic bottle caps (not milk lids) to the collection bins.  5000 caps pay for one cancer treatment.

The Math Homework Hotline is broadcast live every Wednesday at 6:30PM on TLN, Time Warner ch 5 or Charter ch 12.  Call in to 254-4106 and talk with the Math Pros!

All parents are invited to attend School Improvement Team (SIT) meetings at Murray where school wide issues are discussed and decisions made.  The next full team meeting will be held March 10th in the media center at 3:45.

The plan for middle school redistricting for the 2010-2011 school year has been approved.  The map will be available at nhcs.net.

The 2010-11 School calendar has been approved and can be found at nhcs.net.  Also, school board meetings can now be viewed from the website under “video library.”

Wilmington Health Access for Teens (WHAT) has opened an office in the arts hallway of Murray.  WHAT offers mental health services for depression, anxiety, relationship problems, academic distress, ADHD and other behavior disorders.  Psychological evaluation and psychiatric services are available. Most major insurance is accepted and ability to pay is not a criterion for receipt of services.   Call 790-2363 ext 110 or 790-9949 for more information.
