I. Roscoe, there are two main reasons why you should never use steroids.
A. First, steroids have several negative physical effects.
1. A recent study by the American Medical Association showed that even a limited amount of steroids can damage a person’s growth in the long run.
a. This is what happened to Bubba Bronson, New Bern High School’s main running back, who took steroids for only two months last summer.
b. When he showed up for football practice in early August, he could barely sprint.
2. In professional sports coaches have found that players who use steroids wind up having decreased mental agility on the playing field.
a. For instance, when in the 1977 Superbowl Mack Stambert, the famed Pittsburg Steelers linebacker, completely turned around and started tackling his own team, his coaches were befuddled.
b. Another instance occurred in pro basketball, when J.J. Eunice decided to become a cheerleader during the final quarter and grabbed some pom-poms on the sidelines and started cheering.
B. There are other very negative consequences besides mental and physical ones, namely legal ones!
1. Last year the Federal Government passed a law banning all steroid use in amateur, collegiate and professional sports.
a. The penalties for violating this law are severe in most cases.
b. Several professional athletes—Juan Sohan, Bubba Brutarsky, and Jolene McMurphy—to name only a few, are now in jail because of steroid use in professional sports.
2. Even on the local level sheriff departments and local police have begun cracking down on steroid users and dealers.
a. In New Bern last year five steroid dealers were arrested and jailed, and the community was shocked because several of these dealers were kids from so-called “good” neighborhoods.
b. The sheriff’s department also runs through gymnasiums once a week with special dogs that can sniff out steroids, so the risk of even having them is definitely not worth it.
C. Finally, using steroids is simply another form of cheating.
1. Granted, all athletes should strive to improve their performance, and no one should fault an athlete for striving to do his or her best.
a. Using steroids, however, is similar to race car drivers sneaking illegal fuels into their cars to win a race.
b. In this sense, steroids cheat other athletes who do not use them, and by and large the “real winner” may be cheated out of a victory.
2. Also, when you take steroids, not only are you hurting yourself physically and risking arrest, but you are cheating yourself morally.
a. Last year, Jackie McNoogle, the reigning Olympic gymnast, broke down at a press conference after her confession and subsequent arrest for using steroids throughout two decades’ worth of Olympic Games.
b. She apologized for the legal implications and the hurt she caused her team, and most of all to the hurt that her actions had caused her family.
II. Overall, Roscoe, taking steroids is simply not worth it. Not only do you risk a lifetime’s worth of physical and legal pain, but emotional pain as well.
