I'm sorry I have been so long in getting back to you. Wow! What a busy 6 weeks! Students remember, always have pencils and paper each day. A small pencil sharpener was on the school supply list. We have found that Office Depot or Office Max sells a cheap one that does a good job. Students, I also want to remind you that it is your responsibility to turn in your homework. We always go over the assignment. If you cannot remember it, write it down! Parents, I appreciate your phone calls in the afternoons to check on your child's homework and missing assignments.
Our first projects of leaves were beautiful. And the
lighthouses that were due October 1st are amazing! I spend a lot of time just looking at them. Adults, thank you for your time and help. Our visitor, Mr. Beavers, was a huge success on October 2nd! We learned so much about minerals and he was very child-friendly!
Our next project is a report, food chain, and display of an animal native to North Carolina. It can be an insect, mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, or fish. Please decide which animal you would like to learn about. Check to be sure there is plenty of information in books and on line before you decide. I will give you a guide for the report in a few days.
The fourth grade has a trip to Cherokee October 8th. We will be pulling out at 8:15. DO NOT be late that morning or we will have to alter our schedules! Thank you for those of you who have offered to meet us at the village and help watch student groups of 3-4. A high adult/student ratio assures a safer trip!
The AR program has started. Fourth graders need 15 points every 6-weeks to participate in the 6-weeks activity. There will be a final reward at the end of the year for those who have enough points. I will be counting the AR points as part of the reading grade this 6 weeks.
We all had a lot of fun with the Junior Historian trip to Raleigh last year. We attended the convention and came away with many prizes! My class will be researching "artifacts" again. Each student will be expected to prepare a report about an artifact (an item that is 100 or more years old). Guidelines for that project will be coming home in about a month. However, it is not too early to be LOOKING for that special old item! The research will be a large percent of the social studies grade for that 6-weeks and every student will be expected to do a report, regardless of whether or not you attend the convention.
Please send me a note of any topics that you would be willing to speak about to the class or any hobbies that you can demonstrate. You might also list any available times you have to help in the room or after school.
In closing let me share with you how much I am enjoying your children! We are off to a good start. Please call or write me a note if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
C.Joyce Buckner
