Please make sure that you read/review the special requests and procedures information I send home on the first day of school. This is how I deal with situations that come up in the classroom. Thanks.Weekly/Daily  Assignments can be found in the Agenda Book. It is important to make sure you are checking your child's Agenda book nightly and that all the assigned work is returned to school by the date it is due.

The daily agenda book needs returned to school each day. This helps develop good habits for later in your child's school career. The best times to reach me is Monday through Friday from 7:15 am to 8:00 am or 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Call 649-1547.  Please try to refrain from calling the classroom during instructional time. Once class is disrupted it's hard to get the students refocused. If you have a computer and on line, you can email me at svilcinskas@madison.k12.nc.us. I check email daily. I prefer not to be called at home.

Attendance

Madison County School System has an attendance policy which allows students up to 9 days per semester for illness. Students that go over the 9 days will have to attend after school make-up attendance. For information about the cost of attendance make-up you'll need to contact the office. Also, remember that tardies and early dismissals count toward absences...students that accumulate 3 tardies or 3 early dismissals will be counted absent.

Attendance is taken daily. The school day begins at 8:00 am. Students need to be in the classroom by 8:00 am and ready to begin the school day. If you bring your child to school and you want your child to eat breakfast, then you need to drop him/her off no later than 7:45 am. Students not in the classroom by 8:00 will be counted tardy. Students that leave in the afternoon before school is out will counted as an early dismissal.

Students need to be in school everyday unless there's an extenuating circumstance preventing their attendance.

If your child is absent from school, please send a note with the date and the reason for being absent on it.

Work Policy

Homework and Class work is an essential part of learning. Students will sometimes be given homework  in Science, Health  and/orSocial Studies. Class work will be completed almost daily. The total amount of time it takes to finish the homework/class work will be dependent upon the work habits of the individual student completing the homework/class work and the expectations of the student’s parents. Fifth grade is a big step for students because it is the bridge between elementary and middle school. Also they are expected to be more accountable and responsible for their learning. As in years past they will be expected to take the End of Grade Tests for Reading, Math and Science and pass them.

If you are on line, you can check to see what your child’s assignments are by going to schoolnotes.com then following the directions. I try to maintain this site on a regular basis.

Homework

Homework is an extension of work begun in class and an opportunity for students to review and practice outside the classroom what was taught during the day. Homework is due the next school day. Students that do not complete their homework on time put themselves behind the other students. Homework needs to be neat and legibly written with the proper heading on it. Not crinkled up and messy with no heading. Homework may either be graded in class by the student or collected to be graded by the teacher. If the homework is graded by the student, the work will be collected to be looked over by the teacher. Students may receive either a check or a numerical grade on the homework assignment. Homework should be completed by the students with encouragement from their parents. Parents are encouraged to check over the completed work then help their child make any necessary corrections. Once the homework has been graded, the grade received stands.

Class Work

Class work is work completed at school. Students are expected to complete the assignment in class in the allotted amount of time. It is important that students learn how to pace themselves when completing an assignment. Class work may or may not be assigned a grade. This depends on the assignment. Class work needs to be neat and legibly written with the proper heading on it. Not crinkled up and messy with no heading.

Make-Up Work

Make-up work is work that a student does when absent. Students are expected to call a friend for the assignment. Also if you are on line, you can go to Schoolnotes.com to get the assignments. This is a website I use to post information about what we’re doing in class. Make-up work needs to be completed in a timely fashion so students will not get too far behind the rest of the class.

If your child is absent, and you want to pick up the assignments that day for him/her, please let me know in the morning. This way I can have the assignments written down and ready by the end of the day for you to pick up.

Late Work

Late work is any work not completed on time. The highest grade that late work will receive is a 77/C. No late work will be accepted after the fifth week of the grading period we’re in. The grade becomes a zero unless you contact me and we work out an agreement for your child to receive an incomplete on his/her report card. Then, he/she may complete the assignment by the middle of the next grading period and receive no grade higher than a 77/C.

Tests

Tests are given the same weight as the rest of the graded work.

Extra Credit Work

Students that complete all assigned work should not need to complete extra credit work. I do not give extra credit work. It is important that we work together to help develop standards that will enable your child to learn good work habits and to be successful academically throughout his/her school career.

Acelerated Reading Points

Each year our school sets a goal to reach in the amount of total points earned by the student body. Students are expected to  take AR tests daily/weekly.  Students have daily access to a computer for taking AR tests.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call 649-1547 or email me at svilcinskas@madison.k12.nc.us.
