Welcome to our classroom webpage! I created this site to help keep you up-to-date with homework, upcoming activities, and "classroom happenings"! As always, if there is anything I can do to help your child succeed, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your support. Lesson Plans

November 16th – November 20th     

Kelli Coons – 5th grade ELA/SS

**Reading/Writing will be combined so students can work on their non-fiction book/brochure.

Monday – November 16th  - Hands on Learning Day

Standards: Reading: 5-2.5, 5-2.6, 5-2.7 Writing/Language: 5-5.3 Social Studies:5-3.3,5-3.4

Essential Questions: Reading: Why is it important to know non-fiction text features? Writing/Language: Social Studies: How can I best self-evaluate scores achieved on my Immigration assessment?

Materials: Information Text Flipchart, corrected Immigration Tests

 Reading: Briefly discuss the difference between fiction and nonfiction.  Then, introduce informational text as a type of nonfiction.  Show examples of informational text (newspaper, magazine, brochure, instruction manual, phone book, text book, menus).  Point out the features such as illustration, caption, graphs, charts, bolded words, heading, subheading, etc…  Use the Info Text Flipchart to discuss these features in more detail and have students identify them.

HANDS ON LEARNING ACTIVITY! Informational Text Feature Adventure- Students will locate examples of informational text and use it to complete charts for each element. 

Writing/Language:  .

Social Studies:  Students will get to review and go through their recent assessment of Immigration.  We will discuss their answers and complete a short answer activity in summation of the unit.

Assessment: discussions, group activity.

Homework: 2 lines for 100 BC, bring in newspapers or magazines

Tuesday – November 17th  - Book Character Dress-up Day

Standards: Reading: 5-2.5, 5-2.6, 5-2.7 Writing/Language:5-5.4 Social Studies: 5-3.4,5-3.5

Essential Questions: Reading: Can I locate the different types of non-fiction text features and gain knowledge from them? Writing/Language: What is expected of my writing in order for me to receive a 4 on conventions? Social Studies: What problems arose because of urbanization?

Materials: example of information text

Reading/Writing: Review informational text features and hand out an example of informational text for students to analyze.  Have them work with a partner to label and gain meaning from the text features.  Mrs. Coons Guided Reading Groups

This week I will be floating around to different groups to check for understanding and completion.

Group 1- Hunt for Headings- reading short passages and choosing the best heading for it.

Group 2- Cutting for Captions- using pictures to create captions

Group 3- Coons Advertizing Firm- Students will create an advertisement that would have been seen during immigration

Group 4- Coons Chronicle Group- Taking random pictures and articles, headings, subheadings, and arranging them in the correct story.

Group 5- Brochure Station

*In writing students will work on the written part of their book/brochure.

Social Studies: Students will brainstorm a list of problems that were a result of heavy population and urbanization.  We will discuss coming unit and the Progressive Movement.

Assessment: partner work, self-assessment,

Homework: 2 lines for 100 BC

Wednesday – November 18th – Instructional Game Day

Standards: Reading:  5-2.5, 5-2.6, 5-2.7 Writing/Language: 5-5.4  Social Studies: 5-3.5

Essential Questions: Reading: What information have I gained from my non-fiction text? Writing/Language:  How well does my writing inform? Social Studies: How did labor unions move forward?

Materials: different types of information texts, SS power point, SS study guide

Reading/Writing: Mrs. Coons Guided Reading Groups

Thursday – November 19th  - Community Reader

Standards: Reading: 5-2.5, 5-2.6, 5-2.7  Writing/Language: 5-5.4   Social Studies: 5-3.5

Essential Questions: Reading: Can I navigate through my S.S. book and gain information? Writing/Language:  How well does my writing inform? Social Studies: What were some concerns and issues that the Progresses faced?

Materials: Social Studies book, Information Text Test

Reading/Writing: Students will complete TEST on Informational Test using their SS Book.

*In writing students will work on the written part of their book/brochure.

Social Studies: Continue discussing the progressive movement and complete study guide questions 5-7.

Assessment: class discussion, group work, non-fiction book

Homework: 2 lines 100 BC, S.S. workbook page: 58 #Â’s 1, 3, and 4

Friday – November 6th   - School Spirit Day

Standards: Reading: 5-2.5, 5-2.6, 5-2.7 Writing/Language: 5-5.4   Social Studies: 5-4.2

Essential Questions: Reading: How can I use non-fiction text features to help me understand what I am reading? Writing/Language: How well does my writing inform? Social Studies: What were some of the problems that big business faced?

Materials: materials for non-fiction convention posters,

Reading/Writing: Complete nonfiction convention booklets  Have students clip out examples of each type from magazines/newspapers.  Then, they will tape/paste them to the sheets that corresponds with each convention.  Some of them, they will have to write in from a text book (glossary, table of contents, and index).    You will need to do 3 a day to be finished in 4 days.

*In writing students will work on the written part of their book/brochure.

Social Studies: continue with the progressive study guide, discussing questions 8-12.

Assessment: class discussion, group work, non-fiction book

Homework: 2 lines for 100 BC
