ELA/Social Studies Lesson Plans

Nov. 2nd – Nov. 6th, 2009

Mon., Nov. 2nd

Standards: Reading: 5-3.1 and 5-3.2                    Language: 5-5.1                        Social Studies: 5-3.2

Procedures:

1. Language/Writing:   FOCUS QUESTION:  How does using the writing process help to develop a letter responding to a prompt? Day 1:  Introduce topic.  Use nonfiction information to take notes to help with Governor’s letter writing.  Discuss and review the format of a friendly letter.  Teacher will model this procedure writing a letter to a loved one.

TOPIC:  Living things need good food, water, space, and shelter to survive. Explain how people’s actions have affected, and limited, both animal and plant populations. What could you do to make it better for plants and animals to share the earth with you? Write a letter to your classmates on how they can be better environmental stewards.  (writing contest)

2. Reading:  FOCUS QUESTION: How does the use of context clues, prefixes/suffixes, and roots improve comprehension?

In groups of four students complete the teacher-made  activity for context clues.  Review with students why it is important to use context clues when you come to an unknown word and how it can help comprehension.

Students can use the story to act out the context clue works (reader’s theatre)

3. Social Studies:  FOCUS QUESTION:  Who were the Wright Brothers and what were they known for?  Use SS book to discuss the invention of the airplane and who the Wright Brothers were. Complete study guide.

Assessment: SS study guide, writer’s notebook, SS test – Wed.

Homework: 100BC, study SS guide –test, Wednesday.

Tues., Nov. 3rd

Standards: Reading:       5-3.1 and 5-3.2              Language: 5-5.1                        Social Studies: 5-3.1

Procedures:

1. Language/Writing:  FOCUS QUESTION:  How does using the writing process help to develop a letter responding to a prompt? Day 2:  Continue to build background knowledge.  Use time for research for understanding the topic in question for the friendly letter.  Students will use a circle map to list ideas.

TOPIC:  Living things need good food, water, space, and shelter to survive. Explain how people’s actions have affected, and limited, both animal and plant populations. What could you do to make it better for plants and animals to share the earth with you? Write a letter to your classmates on how they can be better environmental stewards.  (Governor’s writing contest)

 

2. Reading:  FOCUS QUESTION: How does the use of context clues, prefixes/suffixes, and roots improve comprehension? 

                       

3. Social Studies:  FOCUS QUESTION:  How did new inventions and technology such as the LIGHT BULB of the Industrial Revolution help make the US a world power and help us have more opportunities?  How did these inventions make life easier?  Discuss light bulb and Thomas Edison-complete study guide

            Assessment:  guide, writer’s notebook

Homework:    100BC, SS study guide for test on Wednesday

Wed., Nov. 4th

Standards: Reading:       5-3.1 and 5-3.2              Language: 5-5.1                        Social Studies: 5-3.2

Procedures: 

1. Language/Writing:   FOCUS QUESTION:  How does using the writing process help to develop a letter responding to a prompt? Day 3:  Continue to brainstorm ideas.  Review components of letter writing and explain how this will be a letter to a friend (friendly letter).  Discuss that this is nonfiction/informational text  because is displays factual information, but in a different style of writing other than an essay. Take notes on informational texts.

 

TOPIC:  Living things need good food, water, space, and shelter to survive. Explain how people’s actions have affected, and limited, both animal and plant populations. What could you do to make it better for plants and animals to share the earth with you? Write a letter to your classmates on how they can be better environmental stewards.  (writing contest)

3. Social Studies:  FOCUS QUESTION:  How did immigration play a part in industrialization in the US?  Discuss way that Albert Einstein helped the US and he contributed to helping us be a world power.  Also, review how the transcontinental RR helped transport raw materials-Complete study guide if needed and review

Assessment:  SS test – Industrial Revolution, writer’s notebook

Homework:    100BC, study guide for SS test

Thurs., Nov. 5th

Standards: Reading:       5-3.1 and 5-3.2              Language: 5-5.1                        Social Studies: 5-3.1 – 5-3.2

Procedures:

1. Language/Writing:   FOCUS QUESTION:  How does using the writing process help to develop a letter responding to a prompt? Day 4:  Students continue to brainstorm and/or write rough draft. 

TOPIC:  Living things need good food, water, space, and shelter to survive. Explain how people’s actions have affected, and limited, both animal and plant populations. What could you do to make it better for plants and animals to share the earth with you? Write a letter to your classmates on how they can be better environmental stewards.  (writing contest)

2. Reading:  FOCUS QUESTION: How does the use of context clues, prefixes/suffixes, and roots improve comprehension?  Use literacy stations

Fri., Nov. 6th

Standards: Reading:       5-3.1 and 5-3.2              Language: 5-5.1                        Social Studies: 5-3.3

Procedures:

1. Language/Writing:  FOCUS QUESTION:  How does using the writing process help to develop a letter responding to a prompt? Day 5:  Continue rough draft of letter.  Students will revise/edit their letter.  Meet with students to conference about writing. 

TOPIC:  Living things need good food, water, space, and shelter to survive. Explain how people’s actions have affected, and limited, both animal and plant populations. What could you do to make it better for plants and animals to share the earth with you? Write a letter to your classmates on how they can be better environmental stewards.  (writing contest) 

2. Reading:  FOCUS QUESTION: How does the use of context clues, prefixes/suffixes, and roots improve comprehension?  TEST on CONTEXT CLUES

3. Social Studies:  FOCUS QUESTION:  How does immigration play a role in the industrialization of America?  Introduce immigration and what it meant for America.  Ask students to close their eyes and imagine that they have been told that they had to leave their country and that they were coming to America.  Have them discuss what they would pack with them if they only had one bag to put stuff in.

Assessment:  test, classwork, writer’s notebook
