November 23 and 24th (2009)

 

Mon 23th

Standards: Reading: 5-3.2                      Language: 5-4.2, 5-4.6 and 5-5.1            Social Studies: 5-3.3

Procedures:

1. Language/Writing FOCUS QUESTION:       How does using the writing process make us better writers? What elements or characteristics are needed to be an improved speaker.

    Students will use the writing process to write thank you letters to our guest reader, Rev. Tyler Kirby.

Use format in Language text and model.

Review the needed elements to speak proficiently and take notes on this topic.

 

2. Reading:  FOCUS QUESTION: How does understanding informational text features help us become better readers and help us to find information that we need? How can pictures enhance a nonfiction book?

1. Informational Test - (use social studies text).

2. Introduce non-fiction picture book project – explain all aspects – due Dec. 9, 2009 – Wed.

3. Social Studies:  FOCUS QUESTION:  How did immigration and urbanization affect the American economy during the Industrial Revolution, including the role of immigrants in the work force and the growth of cities, the shift from an agrarian to an industrial economy, and the rise of big business?

1. Use Jeopardy game to review for test, Tues. Go over entire SS guide for review.

2. Continue to read Rifka …

Homework:    100BC; SS – test- Immigration/Urbanization.

 

Tues. 24th –

Standards: Reading:  5-3.1 and 5-3.2     Language: 5-4.2, 5-4.6 and 5-5.1    Social Studies: 5-3.3

Procedures:

1. Language/Writing FOCUS QUESTION: How does using the writing process make us better writers?

   A. Students will use the writing process to write thank you letters to our guest reader.

  B. Write a short essay expressing if you were Rifka – 1st person narrative – What you think of the immigration process of a young Jewish girl and her family?  Be specific and use life skills and explanations to show how resilient Rifka was in her journey from Russia to America. Test – grade – SC writing rubric. Create a graphic organizer and this assignment will be completed as classwork.

2. Reading:  FOCUS QUESTION: How does understanding informational text features help us become better readers and help us to find information that we need?  Complete Informational test (if needed)

3. Social Studies:  FOCUS QUESTION:  How did immigration and urbanization affect the American economy during the Industrial Revolution, including the role of immigrants in the work force and the growth of cities, the shift from an agrarian to an industrial economy, and the rise of big business?
