- I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year!
- I will check 100BC logs on January 5th. They should have 16 steps by this date from reading they did before we left for the holidays.
- January 16th - Teacher workday
- January 19th - MLK holiday
- January 20th - Report Cards issued (2nd 9 weeks)
- January 23rd - Awards Day - 8:15 AM
- It is very important that you remind your child to keep their handouts and study guides in the proper section of their notebook. ORGANIZATION is the key to success!
Reading: We will be working on cause and effect in class and guided reading groups this week. Cause and Effect/Cold read test will be on Tuesday, January 13th. Students will be rotating between five guided reading stations to work on point of view. There will be a leveled reader station, reading game, versa-tiles, prefix vocabulary and odyssey stations. I will be working with small groups on their instructional reading level based on their lexile range. Studies show that guided reading is more effective in increasing students reading comprehension skills than whole group reading instruction.
*All students should have 16 steps completed on their 100BC log for the past week. Remember there is a 4 step limit per day and a limit of 4 steps over the weekend (Sat. and Sun.)
Social Studies: We will begin studying the Roaring 20's, Great Migration, Harlem Renaissance, and Great Depression. Test will be the week of January 12th - 16th.
Language: We will be working this week with the prefix vocabulary "inter" and "semi". Activote test will be on Friday, January 9th.
Writing: We will study the craft of "focus" in our writing. I will show them examples of writing that stays focused and writing that doesn't.
*We didn't get to revise their writing (see below) the last week we were in school in December. We will work on that also when they return from break.
I have also taken their name off and scanned some of their memoirs so that we can revise and edit them together. (The morning class will revise and edit the afternoon class's writing and vice versa). I want them to see some of the common mistakes that they are making in their writing.
Please find my lesson plans attached below with daily homework assignments. These are subject to change.
