Students will tell you I am a recycling fanatic, so consider this (found in Coastal Living Magazine's April 2009 issue):
A tin can that entered the ocean in 1986 is still decomposing in 2036. (Where were you in 1986? I had just come to work at GMS, not married, still living at home).
A plastic bottle that entered the ocean in 1986 is decomposing in 2436.
A glass bottle that entered the ocean in 1986 is decomposing in year 1,001,986.
Now, consider the landfill...

Reminders:
1. Figurative language includes the following:
Simile - uses "like" or "as" to compare two or more things. Example - The sun is like a golden disc hanging in the midday sky. OR Sally is as thin as a rail.
Metaphor - does not use like or as when comparing two or more things. Metaphor suggests that one thing "IS" another. Metaphor often uses a "be" verb (am, are, is, was, were). Example: The road, a ribbon on the mountainside, turned and twisted between the trees. OR You are my sunshine.
Hyperbole - uses exaggeration. Example: Sherry told you over and over again to listen! OR Mom has said for a thousand years not to waste your money.
Onomatopoeia - uses words that represent the sounds they make. Example: "BOOM!" went the old train cars at the train yard. OR The window gave a loud crash when it fell off the company truck. TURN OVER TO THE BACK!!!!!!
Personification - gives human characteristics to nonhuman things. Example: The lizards danced in the rain. OR As the storm drew near and the wind began to blow, the tree branches waved to the clouds overhead.
Extra credit opportunities:
1. It's in the Can writing - found in classroom jars
2. Write a poem using vocabulary words
3. Other extra credits as the arise, with teacher approval. Students should see me with their ideas.
