If we do not have the test, then you may still choose to read the book and write a summary. Students are preparing for our six-weeks exams. First, second, and third periods will test on the final half day, June 3rd. Fifth, sixth, and seventh periods will test on Tuesday, June 2nd.
Students have completed a study guide (really more of a practice exam). They can look over pages in the portfolio. We will review Monday before the tests. These tests will count once in my gradebook.
Portfolios were sent home yesterday for your signatures. Progress reports are being sent home today. Please sign and return tomorrow.

We are glad to be finished with PASS testing! We are spending a couple of days "re-visiting" the Black Death. This tragic spread of disease took place at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance period.

We have had a very busy few days! On Monday, we completed our regular curriculum with a look at exploration. Students were to have completed #16 by Monday. Interims were sent home for each class on Monday and were to be returned by Tuesday.
Yesterday and today, students have completed Beyond Question reviews for our PASS test tomorrow. Students will take either the science or social studies test.
Portfolios should be in order. I will be taking them up either Friday or Monday. We will continue working on the Renaissance. A six weeks exam will be given on the last half days. This exam will be based on the portfolio we are working on now.

BEGINNING WORK: (Time allowed to work on #16.)
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: *What were the roles of John Calvin and Martin Luther in the Reformation? *Why did Europeans send out explorers? *What were some of the routes of major explorers? We completed our #15 notes on the Reformation. Most students were able to complete their #16 page on exploration.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: *How did the invention of the printing press affect life in Europe?*What religious differences brought about the Reformation? *What were the roles of John Calvin and Martin Luther? Students discussed the incredible changes brought by the invention of Gutenberg's printing press. We began talking about the Reformation and problems in the Roman Catholic Church.
ASSIGNMENT: #13 is due tomorrow.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: *What were characteristics of Renaissance art? Students looked at our classroom collection of Renaissance art and compared selections to medieval paintings. We paid particular attention to the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: *What was the Renaissance? *Why did it begin? * What is HUMANISM? Students took a closer look at the beginning of the Renaissance today. Ask you student to name the city where this "rebirth" began. Ask how humanist thought was different from the thinking of people in the Middle Ages.
ASSIGNMENT: Your #11 page is due tomorrow. Please be on time with this assignment. We are working very hard to finish the curriculum in time for our testing next week.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: *How did the Renaissance begin? *How was the Renaissance a “new birth” for Italy and central Europe? Most classes reviewed the three Mesoamerican civilizations and began working from the text, pages 558-564. Students are working on Cornell notes (#11). Third period is still completing the Inca civilization, but did receive the #11 paper.
ASSIGNMENT: Complete both sides of #11 and turn in on Wednesday. This is a 100 point grade. You should not be late in turning in this assignment. Yes, you will need to work on it at home. Thanks.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: *Why did the Aztec civilization end? *Who were the Inca? We completed our look at the Aztec and began a brief study of the Inca. We continue adding information to our comparative chart (#10).
ASSIGNMENT: No new assignment. I will take up the #10 chart on Monday for a grade. Don't forget to consider our reading lists for extra credit as you check out library books. Be sure to let me know when you take a test that can count as extra credit for us. Remember the "You Wouldn't Want to Be a ..." books.

BEGINNING WORK: Students read from the content reader— “The Sword of the Samurai”
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: *What was life like for the samurai of feudal Japan? Students discussed the training of samurai and BUSHIDO--the code of honor for samurai. (7th period students worked on the paper from Friday.) Students turned in our #7 chart and their literature assignments today. Each is a 100 point grade.
