Dear Parents and Students,
It’s been great meeting all our new sixth graders. RMSA is an awesome school and a great environment. We have high expectations at RMSA and I feel good communication is a key to that success. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via email or phone with any questions or concerns that you may have.
Please rest assured that your child’s safety is my number one concern. If your child is sick or injured, a short handwritten note from you will excuse them from PE activities for one day. Students are not required to change clothes for PE, but are given time to change if they desire. Dresses, tank tops, skirts, flip flops, tight jeans, boat shoes, and shoes without laces are not appropriate for PE, and sometimes unsafe. Points will be deducted for not dressing properly. Skill development, fitness improvement, effort, and teamwork are an important part of physical education at RMSA. I will always encourage your child to do their best. Thank you in advance for all you do to help them achieve and surpass these expectations. Please let me know of any medical problems/conditions that might prohibit your child from participating safely and fully in all of our activities.
Physical Education Curriculum:
We want students at RMSA to develop and maintain lifelong healthy habits. Students set individual goals based on their current fitness levels measured using the FITNESSGRAM. It is the physical fitness assessment tool for South Carolina schools. PE classes begin with warm ups, stretches, and daily fitness exercises to help improve flexibility, muscular strength, cardio/respiratory endurance, and body composition. I have planned units of instruction in Basketball, Flag Football, Softball, Badminton, Dodge Ball, Kickball, Team Handball, Speedstacking, Disc Golf, Capture the Flag, and Volleyball. Your child will learn skill fundamentals, rules of play, and game strategies in a variety of games/activities that promote physical, mental, and social health. I believe physical education should be fun, educational, beneficial, and lifelong

Activity Log (Homework..hopefully FUN!)
Students have received an activity calendar to log PE homework. (20 minutes of aerobic activity….3 times each week). These calendars/logs will be taken up on Friday for grading. If your child is absent on Friday, it is their responsibility to turn it in the next day they attend class. They should be kept in the students PE/Health folder.
3 things should be written/logged in the activity log:
1) Type of activity. Examples of activity include biking, jogging, skate boarding, power walking, aerobics, soccer, cheering, karate, swimming, basketball, etc. If you are playing a sport and have practice after school, you may include that in your agenda. If you are unsure of an activity, please ask me.
2) The amount of time exercising in the activity. It needs to be a minimum of 20 minutes of aerobic activity 3 days each week. Your childs heart rate should be between 125 and 170 (bpm) beats per minute during the activity. This is their Target Heart Rate. Please refer to my website if you have questions.
3) A parent’s initials on each activity.
