Our Next Unit of Study:  Twentieth Century in the US & SC

Lewis W. Hine (1874-1940) was commissioned by the National Child Labor
Committee to travel the United States taking photographs of child labor.  The
committee hoped that his powerful images would provide the necessary
argument to end dangerous and unhealthy child labor practices in America.
Many of his photographs included a brief description of the children and their working conditions.  This one is labeled only, "Two newsgirls."

SPECIAL NOTE TO PARENTS

We are now studying the World War II and Post-World War II Period and will be moving quite fast.  Students will have an End of Course Social Studies test (not state-mandated) on May 29.  We have already reviewed for this test in class.  They should be reviewing notes nightly.

This last nine weeks is VERY short!  We will continue to grade and each and every grade is important.  With such beautiful weather and the end of the year in sight, it is especially important for your child to stay on task and keep up with all assignments.

As always, if you have a question or concern, please don’t hesitate to call or email me.

ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, NEED-TO-KNOW QUESTIONS for the Twentieth Century in the US & SC Unit!!!

(HINT:  Compile answers to these questions WHILE you are studying this unit!!)

1. What were the political, economic, & social conditions in SC following the end of Reconstruction?

2. What was the impact of WW I & II and the Great Depression on SC?

3.  What were the significant aspects of economic growth experienced by SC during and following World War II?

4.  What was the economic impact of 20th centruy events on SC?

In the “Roaring Twenties,” the “flapper” was the image of freedom, wealth, and fun that would come to define the era.  Fur, silk, and beads, combined with athletic, tanned bodies, created the ideal female figure.
