SIXTH GRADE READING, Mrs. Gerrilyn Sumlin
COURSE OVERVIEW: The sixth grade Reading course is designed to enable students to derive meaning from print as they read a variety of genres. Students will integrate language structure, meaning clues, and word attack skills when reading orally and silently.
TEXT: Houghton-Mifflin Triumphs (Replacement Cost: $45.75), with Practice Workbook (Replacement Cost: $7.97). Students will also be assigned various novels throughout the year, for which they will be responsible.

CONCEPTS ADDRESSED DURING THE FIRST NINE WEEKS:
·COMING TO CLASS PREPARED TO WORK, WITH 3 PENS AND FREE READING BOOK DAILY, CORRECTLY HEADING PAPERS, AND MAINTAINING AGENDA, BEHAVIOR LOG, AND 3 READING FOLDERS.
·Vocabulary
·Assorted Genres and their characteristics and elements
ASSESSMENT:
Student learning will be assessed through a variety of methods including class participation, daily assignments, homework, independent and group projects, quizzes, and reports. Tests are given upon the completion of each story or novel section, and at the end of vocabulary lessons (about every 2 weeks). Grades will be determined by the following percentages:
Tests & Projects 35%
Classwork, including being prepared for class 35%
Vocabulary assignments & quizzes 20%
Homework, including reading logs 10%

SUPPLIES NEEDED EVERY DAY:
·Student Agenda (School property. Replacement cost if lost or damaged: $10… So don’t tear out pages from it.)
·Two three-prong portfolio folders, and notebook paper (preferably wide-ruled)
·3 BLUE OR BLACK PENS. NO PENCILS ARE TO BE USED IN READING CLASS. During the first semester, points were deducted from papers done in pencil. During the second semester, WORK DONE IN PENCIL WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED; i.e., THE PAPER WILL BE A ZERO GRADE.
·A free-reading book.
·The current book, text, novel, and/or material being studied.
HOMEWORK:
Students should read 25 minutes, 5 days a week. In order to comply with Cobb County’s policy of reading a million words (25 books) per year, they will record their books on a log to be kept in the classroom. Occasionally other written work will be assigned.
LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED UP TO TWO DAYS SCHOOL DAYS AFTER IT WAS DUE. POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR LATENESS UNLESS THE STUDENT WAS ABSENT. Students are responsible for attaining assignments missed during an absence. Students will have the same number of days to make up missing assignments as the number of days missed. Make- up work must be handed directly to the teacher.
There is no “extra credit work.” Students are expected to do all regular work assigned.
This syllabus is subject to change in order to accommodate classes that need additional or less time on a unit. Classes will be notified when changes are made to the syllabus.
