Below is highlighted information that can be found within your 2008-2009 Choral Handbook. Please read the entire manual and return the enclosed forms (signed) no later than Wednesday, August 27, 2008. All order forms (i.e. shirts, uniforms, etc.) have deadlines noted on them. PLEASE ADHERE TO THESE DEADLINES! ANY ITEMS ORDERED AFTER THE DEADLINE WILL INCUR INDIVIDUAL SHIPPING CHARGES IN ADDITION TO THE COST OF THE GARMENT UNLESS AN ARRANGEMENT HAS BEEN MADE BETWEEN THE PARENT AND THE DIRECTOR!
Goals for Chorus at East Coweta Middle School:
Your students will be learning a lot of new
things this year. I have categorized the goals as follows:
Individual goals:
1. to learn to make a healthy, correct and
beautiful vocal sound;
2. to become literate in the language of music
(reading and writing);
Ensemble goals:
1. Teach students to be part of a group or
ensemble – singing, working, playing and
making memories together;
2. Give concerts in the community, and perform
for the purpose of adjudication;
3. Increase the program through recruiting and
retention.
Attendance Policy
Attendance at all choral functions (i.e rehearsals, performances, etc.) is mandatory. Missing dress rehearsals and concerts is unacceptable, except in the case of an extreme circumstance (ie, documented sickness, death in the family, etc). It is the responsibility of the student (NOT THE DIRECTOR) to resolve matters regarding missed performances.
In the event a student misses a concert, the student is expected to turn in the following:
1. A signed written explanation, from a parent or
guardian, explaining the reason for the
student’s absence. This notice must be made
within three days of the student’s return to
school after having missed the performance.
2. A written assignment to be completed within
one week of its issuance.
The first must be submitted before the student will be allowed to submit the second. Without a written explanation, there will be no make-up work issued!
Financial hardships
No student will be denied the right to participate in mandatory or voluntary chorus activities because of financial hardships. Please contact the director concerning these issues, and all will be dealt with in a strictly confidential manner.
Grading System
Chorus students are assigned letter and numerical grades at the end of each nine-week grading period based upon daily points accumulated over the course of the term. The value of each assignment is determined by the director. These points are accumulated in the following categories:
For this course, students will simply need a folder to keep things in and paper (and pencil). I have personally purchased clipboards for your child's convenience; however, should he/she become abusive with the materials provided, then he/she will no longer be allowed the privelege to borrow my materials. If you choose, a 3 ring binder would be fine. The student simply should have something to bear down upon in the instance that he/she has to write.
6th grade:
Students will be learning of the literal definitions of music and sound, characteristics of each, and elements which define both. They will be given opportunities to earn extra credit through several physical and extra-cirricular activities.
7th Grade:
Students will be watching two musicals and their assignment will be to create their own musical based on elements found within each. Students are placed into groups of 3 and their job is to manifest a script, storyboard, and soundtrack based upon their creativity and cooperation from the musicals we watch. Students will gain the tools necessary through the viewing of musicals, the reading of stageplays, the discussion of ideas, and the assistance of me, the director!
8th Grade:
Students will be exposed to several musicals over the course of the class. They will be assigned a packet for each, to be completed and turned in when notified (after having viewed the musical). We will then discuss the musicals, review the materials given, and test over our discussions and the musical's content.
