Career Connections is an exploratory class available for 6th and 8th grade students at CMS and SMMS. Students are in the class for 9 weeks. Areas of study include self-knowledge, career clusters, positive workplace habits, preparing for a career now, learning about different careers, and other topics that arise.
During the course of study, the students will gather information about themselves and use this information to identify career clusters in which they show interest. They will learn about careers available in Camden County and across the country. They will write brief reports, reflections, and summaries. Sometimes they will create simple presentations either on posters or using PowerPoint. We use internet, books, magazines and videos to learn about trends in the workplace. We will identify projects students can do in middle school to develop real-life job skills and acquire work experience.
** "BEE" Grades **
The kids are learning about careers and what it takes to make your workday dreams come true. I told them I would treat them as if we were on a jobsite. They have only a few rules to follow to receive a 100 for a BEE grade every day.
1. Be on time; use time wisely
2. Be prepared to participate by bringing paper, pencil/pen, and agenda.
3. Be positive to teacher and peers (good classroom manners, no fussing)
4. Be gum-free. (No gum or candy)
If the students violate any of these "Bee" guidelines, it will cost 15 points off their "Bee" grade. After 3 weeks, I will deduct 30 points instead of 15. At this point of the quarter, students know my expectations. It is so easy to be successful!
