Three branches of government

Congress is divided into 2 sections
1.    House of  Representatives
•    Number of members depends on the state’s population.
•    435 members
•    Members must be 25 years old
•    Must be a citizen for at least 7 years
•    Must live in the state they represent
•    They serve a term of 2 years

2.    Senate
•    Number of members is 2 per state
•    Must be 30 years old
•    Must be a citizen for 9 years
•    Must live in state that they represent
•    Term they serve is 6 years

Executive Branch ( the President of the United States) –carries out the laws
•    The President must be at least 35 years old
•    Must be born in the United States
•    Serves a 4 year term
•    His jobs include:
1.    Runs day-to-day business of government
2.    is head of Executive branch
3.    Represents the country in dealing with other countries
4.    head of nation’s military
5.    “Takes care of the laws faithfully executed”

Judicial Branch- Decides if laws are working
•    National/ Federal Court system
•    Decide cases having to do with national laws, treaties, or the constitution
•    Decide cases between states and between citizens of different states
•    Highest court is the Supreme Court
•    President names the Justices and Congress      votes on them
•    The Justices serve for life.
