GIFTED- Another year done. A lot more learned. I am impressed how many of you put forth the extra effort this year.  The way you practice learning in middle school will follow you to high school. Each year it gets easier and that is my objective so that in years to come the hard assignments will be easier for you to accomplish.

I FORGOT JOURNALS- Update on our journals. We actually got back about 15 of them. Collectively the journals that we heard from over the year went to 33 states, DC and 21 countries! That definitly beats last year!

Tape Recorders- Some have disappeared. If you borrowed one and for got to return it just take it back to the school this summer and label it with my name and I will get it. Thanks.

Next year- If you are traveling save the hotel shampoos and soaps for our service project each year. If you go to the denist ask for donations of toothbrushes toothpaste and dental floss. For those of you just coming to Midland we do personal hygiene kits for the battered woman's shelter.

Next year- NHD- The theme is Revolution, reaction, reform. This is one of the easiest themes. It is the first one I have repeated. You might be traveling to areas where you can get information or in a week or two you may want to get ahead of the game.  If you want to get started e-mail me and get your topic approved by me. There are so many things that work for this. If you tell me a general area you might be interested I might be able to guide you into a more specific area. In a week or so I will try to post some suggestions.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY!!!!! 1.5 weeks away!!!!!!
Sunday- June 12-We meet 4:00 PM at the clock outside the front of the Stamp student Union. Bring buttons and schedules. If you need before that call me. Take your buttons with you t5o registration. Many forget and it is a great place to trade.

Monday June 13 COMPETITION!!! Make sure you have FOUR copies of your updated paperwork.
Have buttons with you.
That evening is dance and hopefully we will finish our button collection.

Tuesday- Be at Metro station at College park at 8:00AM with your ticket already bought. I suggest getting a card and putting $20 on it. If you need more you can add it later. Don't lose your tickets!

Tour begins at 9:30 from Union Station in DC. Dress comfortably and good walking shoes. Don't forget cameras. MIdland students are free (because booster is paying for them). Anyone else going it is $32 for adults and $15.50 for children 11 and under. There is a 50cents discount if we have 20 going. I do not mind taking students and meeting up with parents later if parents do not want to go. It is the tourmobile tour that includes Arlington. We will be on and off all day. You might want to go on line and check it out.

If we have no one in the finals we will return to campus in time to eat on campus and then we will watch some of the finals. If we have any of our plays in the finals we will be back in pleanty of time for them to get ready no matter how early we have to leave DC.

Wed.- Be at Metro station at 8:30. We will go to the national archives, library of Congress and hopefully the Supreme Court before our Capitol tour at 2;00. We will be meeting Congressman Westmoreland at 4:00. Afterwards we will go to the reception at the American history museum.

Thursday- Make plans to get to the campus early if you are not staying on campus because traffic will be horrible! You do not want to miss the parade. Bring bottled cold water because it will be hot. WEAR your NHD shirts!

After awards we will get the students checked out of the dorms unless you want to come early enough to check them out before. That is up to you.

Feel free to e-mail or call with any questions.

             GEORGIA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
If you have wondered what we accomplish in my class as it relates to GPS I have listed it for you below.  Because of the uniqueness of my class we are fortunate to accomplish so much.

GPS that are taught during the year in Mrs. Funk's Class.

When reading class novels and books for research:
1.    The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts. ELA6R1, ELA7R1, ELA8R1.
2.    The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading. ELA6R2, ELA7R2, ELA8R2.
3.    (During class novels) The student reads aloud, accurately, familiar materials in a number of genres, in a way that makes meaning clear to listeners. ELA 6R3, ELA7R3, ELA 8R3.
4.    The student reads a minimum of 25 grade-level appropriate books or book equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words) per year from a variety of subject disciplines. The student reads both informational and fictional texts in a variety of genres and modes of discourse, including technical texts related to various subject areas.  ELA6RC1, ELA7RC1, ELA8RC1.
5.    The student participates in discussions related to curriculum learning in all subject areas. ELA6RC2, ELA7RC2, ELA8RC2.
6.    The student acquires new vocabulary in content area and uses it correctly. ELA6RC3, ELA7RC3, ELA8RC3.
7.    The student acquires a context for information acquired by reading across subject areas. ELA6RC4, ELA7RC4, ELA8RC4.

When the students are writing essays and research papers some of the above GPS are covered but also the following:
1.    The student produces writing that establishes an appropriate organizational
structure, sets a context and engages the reader, maintains a coherent focus throughout, and provides a satisfying closure. ELA 6W1, ELA7W1, ELA8W1
2.    The student demonstrates competence in a variety of genres. ELA6W2, ELA7W2, ELA8W2
3.    The student uses research and technology to support writing. ELA6W3, ELA7W3, ELA8W3
4.    The student consistently uses the writing process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing. ELA6W4, ELA7W4, ELA8W4

When the students are working on and presenting their  national history day projects the following are covered.
1.    The student participates in student-to-teacher, student-to-students, and group verbal interactions. ELA6LSV1, ELA7SV1, ELA8SV1
2.    The student listens to and views various forms of texts and media in order to gather and share information, persuade others, and express and understand ideas. ELA6LSV2, ELA7LSV2, ELA8LSV2

Under social studies standards five goals are listed for the teacher. Four of the five are covered while the students are doing the national history projects.
To accomplish our goal of informed citizens, it is essential that teachers:
1.    Bridge essential understanding about the past to contemporary events.
2.     Assist students in understanding the nature of historical inquiry and the role of primary and secondary sources.
3.    Encourage the consideration of multiple perspectives on events.
4.    Encourage students in speculation about the known and unknown motives and actions of historic figures
